I had a friend who just graduated from the CNY academy in syracuse last year. I can try to put you in touch with him. Send me a private message with some info, where you got hired from, and a way to contact you and I will try to get him in touch with you asap.

I am a graduate from the CNY Academy..graduated in 2003. That was prior to Pre Employment recruits being let in so we were all sworn officers. Ive heard they changed it since then but not sure how. As a basic overview when I went through..we would report to the gym in the morning for PT. Then we would report to the Academy building for class at what ever time they would set...thats basically it as far as the daily routine. For firearms, DT and EVOC phases they would have us report at the designated locations where training is taking place. I cant say much more because I dont want to ruin the fun:D Just like any academy...follow directions and dont draw attention to yourself. They will get on ya if you dont.

yeah, as far as I know you still have to be sworn. Ive been appopinted and fully funded through my dept. Others can put themselves through the academy, although they must have a dept. "backing" them. Little towns will do this to have their police officers yet not have to pay the price to put them through.

I do appreciate the tips... and am looking forward to the "fun"... only a week or so til it starts

Not all that attend Phase I are sworn officers. Some are civilians who go though phase I on their own dime..getting the basic PT, classroom training..ect. Once Phase I is completed they must have been sponsered by a dept to complete firearms and a few other subjects that they could not participate in as a civilian. Im not sure how the academy handles dicipline problems with them. When I went through we were all hired and sworn in.If you acted up you would be given demerits at the academy and be sent back to your chief and suffer dept consequences. With pre employment recruits paying their own way Im not sure what happens with them. Im sure the academy had to tailor a few things.

Ehhh...no sweat..just play the game. I cant say enough about the staff at that Academy. They once told us the academy will "fly by" and that was like in week one or two...At the time I was thinking "give me a break". Needless to say they were right..It flew and so did the years after. Ive since moved to Western NY but still maintain contact with CNY. You will do fine..have fun..enjoy being there. They are there to make you a cop...and thats just what they will do. GOOD LUCK.

That's what I have heard..not just in CNY but in other academys also. Seems a lack of dicipline is usually the cause. The problem with it is that if they keep it up they hold up the rest of the class. Thats when they will most likely get a talkin too or get bounced. Some are former military and have been through the drill so they know how to play the game...some are just young kids who aspire to be Cops but aren't mature enough to "go with the flow" end up getting washed out. What you get out of it is what you put in. If you cant follow simple commands you shouldnt have a bagde and a gun.

couldnt agree more. We were always taught that the key to success in the military is be at the right place, at the right time, in the right uniform with the right attitude and you will be fine. I suspect the same will apply to the academy.
