OK... so I have found this question in another post related to another issue and would like to start a new thread so it's easier to track.
ANY BODY out there who has any information concerning when the latest City of Miami Police Academy is scheduled to start PLEASE respond.
This is what I gathered so far from previous post.
1.) NEXT 2008 academy is slated to start MAY, JUNE or JULY.
2.) Its is to be 6 months long, but the curriculum has changed to be more
PT based.
3.) The study materials have changed and have been consolidated.
4.) According to my BI they need 30 people to start the academy AS OF
APRIL 17, 2008 ONLY 18 people were qualified to attend.
5.) HOW MANY OF YOU have received and signed you Conditional Offer of
Employment??
6.) Has anyone been scheduled for the medical exam yet?
ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT.

Ok, so there are three classes for this summer? Which means that Srgt told me wrong? Pssh...I'm hearing so many different things I dont know which is correct.
So let me get this straight, every month they have a class practically? How many recruits per class?
I should be in BLE 258 if all goes well.

To clear things up, the academy at Miami-Dade College is run by the school, not by any city agencies. Each class has a mix of cities agencies. In my class I had, (4) City of Miami, (5) City of Coral Gables, (1) Florida City, (1) Miami Springs, (4) North Miami, and (5) Independents. Good Luck!!!

Nope. Pretty much every small agency in South Florida goes there. Besides Miami-Dade Police Department which started their own academy back in 2000 (i think). The biggest agency there is obviously City of Miami.

Oh ok...thanks for the clarification. I've been hearing that City of Miami is trying to make their own building for the academy. When I went down there to take my retest I saw the building, when is it suppose to be finished by?

I had no idea. I wouldn't be suprised if they did. MPD has grown a lot. From what I heard from people currently enrolled in the BLE the city pretty much "runs" the classes there.

I've read it in an article a while ago, but there is a building next to the main station that they are working on. It's suppose to be a high school/academy grounds. By I havent heard when it suppose to be completed. It looked like rubble when I was there, supposedly their still demolishing the old building that stood there. I'll see if I can find info on it on the net and post it up if I can.

If the city of Miami runs the class, that only means the majority of class is MPD. But the lessons are taught by the school staff.

City of Miami and Miami-Dade County Public Schools Break Ground for State-of-the-Art Police College and Senior High School for Law Studies
(Miami, Florida)—City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, Miami Police Chief John Timoney and Miami-Dade County Schools (MDCPS) Superintendent Rudy Crew along with Commission Chairman Joe Sanchez, City Manager Pete Hernandez, and members of the Miami’s police department today held a groundbreaking ceremony for the City of Miami College of Policing and Miami-Dade County Public Schools Senior High School for Law Studies, Homeland Security and Forensic Sciences.
The City of Miami “College of Policing” will be located adjacent to the Miami Police Headquarters Building, at the northwest corner of NW 3rd Street and NW 2nd Avenue. This project is envisioned to embody a new concept in international law enforcement, and to have a distinct identity amid the context of downtown Miami. It was developed to prominently integrate an international school of policing with a public high school in a free-standing, four-story, 112,264-square-feet addition to the existing Headquarters. A new elevated enclosed bridge will interconnect the new building to the existing.
Capturing this unique concept in a unified, state-of-the-arts structure, the new College of Policing will both, merge and keep separate, the Miami Police Academy and the Miami-Dade High School of Law Studies, Homeland Security and Forensic Sciences under one roof. The Academy, of approximately 66,132 square feet, will provide Basic Law Enforcement instruction and In-Service classes. Its main spaces will consist of training and administrative areas, student quarters, locker rooms, indoor firing range, and S.W.A.T. area. A flexible space, designed as an Emergency Operation Center for the Miami Fire Department, will be collocated within this portion of the building. The High School component, of approximately 46,132 square feet, will provide classrooms, labs, dining area, and locker rooms for five hundred students, in addition to administrative spaces for staff. Both, the Academy and the High School, will share a 200 seat auditorium and a gymnasium, that may be occasionally used for non-police or school related activities.
The architect firm of Spillis Candela DMJM won the 2007 Merit Award for unbuilt projects from the AIA Miami Chapter for its design of the College of Policing.
The total cost of the project is $35,400,000 with an estimated time of completion of July 2009. The funding sources come from the Homeland Defense Neighborhood Improvement Bond, School Board of Miami-Dade County, Impact Fees and Sunshine State Financing Commission.

Other departments already said they will be going to the city academy instead of MDC. Also a lot of the people in the city that teach city people are all fdle instructor certified. They can teach driving, firearms, patrol, and a lot of other courses.

Maybe your TAs are from the City of Miami, but the people who teaches Legal, Criminal Investigation, IPS, and Investigating Offensives are retired LEOs from other agencies. I forgot the person who teaches legal, he still works for the Key Biscayne Police Department. And yes the school employs instructors that are FDLE certified, but not all are from the City of Miami. I was in BLE 236 and none of my instructors were from the city. Furthermore, the instructor that runs the driving range is a retired Major from North Miami.

I don't wish to insult you but... How reliable is this? Are your sources creditable? Mrs. Pagan said it best... there has been so many people saying so many diferent things. I am starting to think that the BI's and department officials are running interference just to watch us scramble. Though I can say so far this whole process has been an adventure... RIGHT NOW the waiting and not knowing is making the anticipation a bit intense. From what I have been told my app and file have been approved and I am just waiting to be called for medical eval. BUT I have been waiting at this stage for close to 2 months now.
Which brings me to my next question... approx. how long after you physical were you inserted in the accademy? Were you called at night and told to show up the next day or were given sometime make the transition?
Good luck on your studies and congrats for making it this far!

MIA Hopeful I am in the same boat as you. I signed my conditional offer in April and I am still awaiting the medical. I was called by HR a week ago and they told me my background cleared and I would be receiving a call for my medical in the beginning of June. As long as I make in this summer, I'm good. Can't wait to get started.

Okay, what I'm getting from the inside, the next academy start date will be July 28th. It all depends on if everyone passes what they need to pass to get in, they need 30 people, and I have heard they have 29 as of now however it might be more. If they get the amount they what, whatever that amount truely is, it will start this July 28th. GL to everyone!

Well my friends guess who will not be a part of BLE 260 on Sept.22, 2008....give up? Me that's who, I was playing soft ball on Saturday and tore my knee up pretty nasty. I went to the doctor today in the morning and he told me I have 2 tears that will require surgery. I have to see the surgen on Wed. to make sure but he told me I'm a done deal for 12-14 weeks? Is this possible, I don't want to tell my BI just yet until I see the surgen and see what he tells me, but from what they told me today after the surgery I have to rest the physical therapy...I am doomed. I really for the first time in like 25 years feel like crying...crap I can't believe this is happening to me.
