i know asking about the military here may be a bit off the normal topics but..hoping i could get a good answer here..Im very curios about this information as it concerns a friend of mine.
he enlisted in the army..
passed bootcamp.
but a month after that, he left the military (without permission) and went back home because he didnt like the army. he eventually went back to the army base because his commanders were after him lol.
2 weeks later he ran away again!! but went back to the army again.
eventually, the army gave him a medical discharge, which i do not know if it was a honorable or dishonorable discharge, but nevertheless, he basically got kicked out the army..
(they sent him to all kinds of mental doctors in the military, and also sent him to a mental hospital when he got out) he was diagnosed as being BI-POLAR.
my question is, if he wanted to in the future, could he ever try to get back into the armed services? would he be accepted?

Ummm, no. He has a diagnosed mental illness + history of AWOL.
This is US military right?
I understand and am sympathetic to mental illness, but the Army is not a good place for it. Hell the Army causes more mental illness than anything else.
But now a days, who knows, he could have full blow schizophrenia and could be friggin officer.

this the same friend looking to become a cop on the other thread beck? i'm pretty sure the same applies here. even if he was a medical discharge, even if the bipolar somehow isn't mentioned, his AWOL history will be on his file....slim slim slim that any military would take him unless WW3 breaks out.

Thats a big negative, Being diagnosed with Bi-Polar will disqualify you imediatly. Plus and having a history of being awol will not fly in any branch.
There is a Medical discharge. If that is what you are saying he got out with. But since the individual went awol numerous times I would think it would be a dishonrable or an other than honorable discharge. It should say on the DD form 214.
There are SPD,SPN and RE codes placed on all DD214's of those being discharged. These codes are intended solely for use by military recruiters for re-enlistment review and the Department of Defense for statistical analysis. Basicly if he goes into the recruiters office he will be able to pull up what type of chapter was used. There is no hideing your past if it was during your time of service. But really The Bi-Polar is not going to go over.

I will never say that it is impossible for anyone to do anything. However with the situation that you described above I would say that it is highly unlikely that your “friend” would be allowed back into the military. Your “friend” will need to contact a recruiter.
A better question is why would your “friend” want to go back into the military, after having such a difficult time his first time around.

Why is someone from Canada asking questions revelent to the Canadian Army on the NY section of Officer forums?
The 2 bipolar questions plus the silly question about the TBTA Police lead me to a conclusion ....
