Hey guys, here's a great idea I had so I thought why not post it here. I'm trying to create a list of police force sizes in the United States but the twist is they must have a patrol unit and cannot be a Federal Organization; State Police are ok keeping in mind that they have patrol procedures in their force. It doesn't matter if it's a Sheriff Office either just as long as they patrol the streets and are not locked a way in the ig house and courtrooms. Now with the rules with sizes themself.

A great example is the Sheriff's Department/Office. Let's say they do patrol but only 300 out of the total 1,000 sworn, patrol. It doesn't matter how many are in patrol but how many are in the entire force for the list so just go by 1,000. Inside Patrol it can Mounted, Bike, or foot as well as motor. The entire force cannot be less then 100, reason is there are so many municipal divisions in area's that we'd be way over ourselves. If you want to later we can do a Small Department size comparison but for now let's keep it to anything over 100.

Would you guys be up to it?

For me personelly it also gives me a chance to look at where I want to go; I like big departments better due to the variations it gives me. Plus I like a lot of co-workers instead of the 25 and none of them dating a hot chick with friends.

So he we go.

Obviously number 1 is the
New York Police Department (NYPD) at 36,127 sworn (November 2007)

Number 2 is
Chicago Police Department (CPD) at 13,619 sworn (November 2007)

Number 3 is
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) at over 9,600 sworn (Need Confirmation)

Number 4 is a next-door neighbor to number 3
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) at over 8,400 (Need Confirmation)

Number 5 is
Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) at over 6,600 (November 2007)

Let's see who number 6 is. If the mods are ok with it?

Last we were told is LASD is close to 10,000. Goes up and down every month though.

(Not A LEO) A great website is http://www.city-data.com/ . Type in the name of the city and scroll down, it tells you everyone on the payroll of the city such as number of fire fighters, number of sworn protection officers, and number of civilian police employees. Also it tells you the average salary and the monthly amount of payroll given to each department. Also crime statics and population statistics.

If I get banned for posting under ask a cop...I've had a good run. :)
