i have my written with them next month and i was wondering if anyone knew where and how many dispatch centers there are. Are the dispatchers professional?..basicly im just wondering if this is a good choice. Im currently a dispatcher for AMR ambulance.

Hola Senorita,
The only thing about LA county dispatch is that just about every other agency in LA & OC will pay you a lot more. We are always looking for dispatchers in LA, but the 5/8 schedule sucks. I know CHP at the level 2 paygrade is decent plus statewide mobility....which aint bad.

hey!,yeah i know the pay is horrible. i was going to apply for lacity but they are no longer hiring and chp's comm center is a commute. I really want to get my foot in the door while im working on my hearing issue. The pay is better then the slave wages im making now and ill get PERS. You were in the academy class with B.Houle werent you? I used to be his supervisor, hes a good guy.

Alright then, sound like a good plan. If you have the time, schedule a sit-in with the Comm Div Watch Commander. It shouldn't be an issue and its actually pretty entertaining, especially if they have "that one drunk" who calls in every night. Speaking of slave wages, are you gonna be a part of that AMR strike should it happen?

to tell you the truth dude, i hate what im doing right now, i never wanted to dispatch but with my ear screwing up on me it looks like this is what ill be doing for a while, i guess its the next best thing but i want to be out on the road. The strike started last monday and when i came in for my shift last night they announced that it was over, thank god. but ill look into that sit in. funny, we get the drunks calling here too and they think we wont charge them for the ride

Well, when you get into a police agency things may change for the better. As far as your hearing goes, that stupid beeping test is pretty easy to wing and pass...if thats all thats holding you back. Honestly, my hearing isnt bad but I felt like I was pressing the button just to press it sometimes in hopes that I was in sync with the pattern. ITS HOW YA PLAY DA GAME!:D
What exactly is wrong with your ear?

lol ive done that with that test too when i was going to join the Navy. Ive always had hearing loss in my right ear and i have a hearing aid. The LAPDs requirement is no more than a 35decibal loss in one ear, and mine is at 65 decibals. My doctor was willing to write me waivers and everything but as of late i was diagnosed with Menieres disease and without medication i get random vertigo attacks, i had a bad one last weekend and i lost the rest of the hearing in my ear, it hasnt came back yet and my doc says that it might not. What sucks is that im fully functional minus the vertigo, i was born with the hearing loss so its nothing new to me ive worked with radio traffic for the last 5 years and it ****es me off that while i was CHP explorer for 6 years i was told by my advisors not to worry about my hearing and make PT a priority. So i might have to go out of state and test somewhere, which im so willing to do.

Its amazing that you can get hired as a dispatcher and not as an officer since hearing is much more of a priority as a dispatcher. If you can take medication that can pretty much keep that vertigo in check, like a 100% guarantee...then I think you should be good to go. Are they more lenient(sp) out of state?

yeah they are, Colorado state troopers say as long as you can "understand" radio traffic

Hop on that! I would personally love to live/work in Colorado. All the boarding I could possibly handle. BTW, go to bed!

Yup, we are hiring dispatchers....can't get any because of the less-than-living-wage pay. But hey....we're used to it, and have learned to compensate. There is a TON of overtime in dispatch.
We have our main dispatch, which is called HRC - Headquarters Radio Communications. Then we have dispatch positions at each hospital we contract with for police services...Harbor/UCLA, LAC/USC, Rancho Rehab center in Downey, Olive View Med Ctr, and MLK Hospital.
The main dispatch has Dispatcher II positions, while the hospitals have Dispatcher I positions. It is a POST certified position with us, so you can get your POST dispatcher and move on to a better paying agency (read - ANY other agency). We REALLY need to pay our folks more. Really. I mean, REALLY REALLY. They deserve it!!
