Ive been on nypd psych review from october 07 to this April. I call psych and they tell me that a decision has finally been made but they cant tell me over the phone. I was told id get a letter in the mail and it could take up to six months to get it:(. I spoke to my BI and some cops I know and they say its not necessarily a dq letter. Im a little optimistic too cause they made a decision before the mini medical dates and date of hire so maybe their trying to get me in...or not. anyone on the force or in the academy have a similar situation, or know someone who has had one?

call APD they would tell u if you failed or not. I had to find out that way. I called them up asking when can i schedule my physical and they were like you failed the psychology. So basically if the NYPD doesn't want to move forward with u right now it means u failed

Thanks for that advice norwichcadet but i passed everything already except psych and i called apd and they dont have an answer either, it still shows me in their system as on review. matter of fact i did the mini medical last year but didn't get hired in January cause i was still on psych review.

Yeah, this is my last shot. I'm aged out, so this is my last hoorah. I just have the BI. I'm calling tomorrow if someone tells me if it is a special #. I tried calling the Doc myself, but they said he was with a prospect. I got switched with my BI. My last BI was traded or something like that. Now I have to wait two weeks to meet the new one:mad: I'd like to know before hand if the Psych. review comes off. I did what they asked of me to get off it.

So are you saying even though you done and completed all of them, a psych review still on record means you cant go to the academy? thats so lame

I think so:confused: Unless they wanna see you sweat and shake. We will see what the BI says. They usually let you know what's going on. When do you see yours?

I am so going on psych review, my mother sent me to therapy when I was younger and had a restraining order on me because she was mad at me. I had to go last week to the doctor to have him send the papers to the nypd psych.

Oh man thats bad... During the Oral Psych i really felt i screwed up big time... i felt like a criminal with my own problems.. and the psychologist kept saying "You should go see a psychologist / counselors, it really helps"

My Doctor just couldn't understand why I wanted the job at my age. It is a second career for me and a career change. I didn't tell him I'm on my second house and already have a 3200sq. ft house and 3 cars and a motorcycle and just ordered a baby grand piano. I told him I wasn't doing it for the money and I guess that confused him. I didn't want to get into my financial stuff. They are curious enough. I already volunteer FIRE/EMS and if I can get paid for helping people and help fight crime or write tickets whatever comes first all the better. I told him that I saw a therapist for 4 visits because my grandmother thought I was depressed when I was 16. After the fourth visit he sent me home. I guess it took 2 visits to see that I wasn't depressed and two for the milking. This is like 18 years ago! I had to go to my school and have them write a letter that I was not seeking any help and was not any problem to the school. I went to my old school and had them pull my file and there was nothing stating any such thing. So I had them forward a letter to the Doc. Now I'm waiting in limbo?

Sounds your like situation is kind of complicated... theres 3 months left until the academy starts so we gotta step it up and get w/e documents they required so we wont be delayed

Yeah jrm1313... thats right. But the only thing that is bothering me is if i can still go the academy if im still in psych review and i passed everything else, i know the NYPD needs people so maybe they'll accelerate it?

you can only be hired if you PASSED everything. I've asked around and basically review is limbo. You didnt pass and you didnt fail.

I called someone who knows someone in APD and they said they might be able to get me an answer but it will take a couple of days. I finally touched bases with my BI and they said even if i find out its a dq ahead of time, I cant even appeal it until i get that letter in the mail:mad:. This system seems fine, but the one that needs major retooling is psych, there system is the worst. They keep applicants in the dark and why is it that it can take up to half a year to tell someone they aint getting a job?

Well, if its not meant to be maybe it is for a reason. That's the way I have to look at it. Onto bigger and better things.

Review of any sort will not allow you into the next academy. You need to PASS every step of the hiring process in order to move forward. Some psych reviews are real easy (paperwork from a psychologist from childhood etc), and some will make you die on the list (the restraining order in the past sounds like it may possibly do it for ya).

Don't give up if its what you want, but don't wait around either. Take other tests and look for other things in the meantime.

Good luck.

Yeah, my problem is I went to Joe Schmoe therapist and not through insurance(we weren't rich) so there is no paper record of it, that's why I was sent to my school to request some sort of a school record. That I was not seeking help in school or a problem within the school. I have a praising letter from them and they sent it to the Doctor. I tried calling him to see if he received it, but they said he was busy. I would like to get this courtesy call in to rest the mind. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut, there's no record of it and he's holding my feet to it now. This is what I get thinking it happened 18 years ago and it should be no problem. I would understand if I hurt someone, caught with a gun, drugs, etc. I want this to happen:), but I am at mercy of the Doctor:(. I wish I would have had one of the pretty female psychologist's at the Oral exam. At least the medicine dealt to me would taste a little sweeter. I sit here on hands waiting with a smile and if its my turn to step up I am ready to serve knowing without a doubt I would be an asset. I see my BI on the 13th. So in 13 days and the count starts now.

The # 13 is a bad number dude lol yeah if its not on record you shouldve just kept your mouth shut and not say anything about it... its not like theyll check on that in their database, even if it did it wouldnt exist!

never know, your school may have a note of it on your file, or it was reported somewhere down the line. And if they did find out then you would be looking at a full blown DQ rather than review.

Also if it was ever found out while on the job even after probation you could be terminated because you hid something that would be cause for DQ.

I was clean with the school. The lady was actually working there when I went there. She was very nice. A dying breed in the administrative field! 13 is good for me as you can see in my username. So good I put it twice. You can probably guess my first name. I'm looking forward:D.

Yeah! I'd rather be upfront and put the cards on the table. Its so petty, but still a snag. Its done and I have no shadows chasing me. Imagine being on for two years and get pulled for something small. They always had it in the shadows and if you screwed up they would use it to get you off the force without any fight from you. You lied on your application, that's it your disqualified. I think you need 5 years on before you can receive anything in form of a pension. Not 100% on that.

I knew that before going through the hiring process the Psych / somewhat the JST would be the 2 hardest processes to go through... now that im done with the JST, the psych is the #1 hardest obstacle, i heard many horror stories based on the psych review

Ok first of all, being rich and having insurance are two completely different things. Second of all, insurance records and medical records are completely different as well. If you went to see a legit DOCTOR (MD, DO, or Ph.D. performing psychology or psychiatry work) they are REQURIED to keep official records of your interactions with them as a patient. These are not records of payment, they are records of your conversations, the doctors notes, progress, etc.

Call the doctor, fill out the form for HIPAA and tell them to transmit everything via fax to psych services. If they say they will not release their personal records, tell them to write a letter of sumamry instead regarding your treatment, progress etc.

If the doctor doesn't have notes, or refuses to comply further, give your BI and Psychologist at NYPD their name, address, phone number, and let them take it from there.

This is something that will only hold you up if YOU LET IT. I had the same problem you describe above, and I was on review for 3 days until I got all the paperwork together. If the things you talked about with the therapist are as minor as you make it appear to be, then you should have the same outcome as I did.

Good luck, and keep on top of this stuff. If you pass everything you WILL be hired, so its on you to make sure you get through it.

Thanks, it should run smooth and turn out great. I couldn't even tell you the Doctor's name or where it was. It was like 18 years ago and not very important after that time. This was before HIPPA. I think HIPPA is a thing of the 90's. To me I can't remember life before my first kid:confused:. Anyway thanks for the positive boost and I look forward to meeting with the BI to get the show on the road. Thanks again,~J

It is normally a DQ letter, however it may be something different.... If I were you I would hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.... Not being funny or nothing, but I like to prepare myself for disappointment rather than have it sneak up on me.... Good Luck, hopefully it wont be the DQ letter.

Yeah, you have to be rich if the family does not have a job with insurance and you need cash money to go to the doctor!

you can appeal it. or you can keep trying. The only problem is that they will have the results of the last/previous ones.

If it was 18 years ago I am not sure how important they would value it. Unfortunately if the psychologist thinks its of any value of all she/he will put you on review and unless that paperwork ever appears you will sit there until you expire from the list you are on.

I don't know if there is anyone from psych services or APD on here but maybe they can give you some more insight. All I have is my personal experience. Sorry.

I was told from APD, BI, and other people who have the job already id be getting a letter anyway regardless of it being a dq or not so that has me somewhat optimistic.
Im preparing for the worst believe me. Ive applied for other agencies and exams for other jobs with the city and im planning finishing up college too. If it is a dq letter and I have a new career I like, ill appeal it anyway just off of principal whether i still want the job or not.
I got a mini medical letter last year while i was still on review, If I dont get one come june then ill already know the answer. I just dont want a failed police psych to stay on my record that might come back to bite me later.
