Are there any police officers or deputies who were former emergency services dispatchers? Is being bilingual a good benefit? Don't want to disrespect any body here but is this more like a 'chick' career. Any input is welcome...

I was for 5 years. It's always good to speak another language, especially Spanish... you usually get paid more as a dispatcher and cop if you speak it.
Dispatching is typically a female dominated job. I was the only male radio dispatcher at my agency of 50 dispatchers. It did not matter to me. if any thing it made me stand out.

We've had a couple male dispatchers that moved on to sworn, and we have one who is a retired deputy. We also have some male dispatchers who have made it their career.
The ratio skews towards female, but maybe that's because guys see it as a "chick" career?

All the more reason for a guy to apply, then. Right?

We have a former male dispatcher in training right now as a sworn officer .. He is also bilingual and his experience from being a dispatcher has given him a huge advantage in the FTO program.

You would think...huh?
I'm not sure why it's perceived as a chick job, unless it's because smaller agencies have dispatch handle lots of clerical work.
If you are computer savvy, have a reasonable typing speed, and can maintain a calm demeanor on the air you should do well in dispatch.
And...all those skills are used in the field too! Especially staying calm on the air.
