is this local or federal? I am one of the lucky unpiad volunteers at my dept to do BI. Be prepared to explain any problems, whether you think he knows about it or not. Dont make the BI find something that you neglected to tell them. If this is the beginning interview, he will want to check and verify that everything you have on your packet is true, and that you didnt rem anything since then. If its the end maybe he found something, or just wants to say good job:)
I have found that its really irritating when an applicant cant give me some references that he would call a friend, and that cover a large portion of his life. for example, every references has only known 3-5 years....wheres the rest? How were you in high school, as an early 20, etc.
So this is my list:
1. detail ANYTHING that could be an issue, no matter how small.
2. Good references from diff times and places.
3. Have all your documentation, dates on tickets etc, and address and employment history.

I'm a background investigator. Ditto to what was said above. The more you hide the worse you look. If everyone was perfect we would all have made our first million by our 18th b day. The biggest DQ's I have had are not being honest on your packet (that's automatic). The chief and capt want to know your strengths and weeknesses so you can be placed in the right spot. I have showed up to interview parents who seemed so intoxicated they couldn't talk and had reports of domestic violence, but the applicant had disclosed all and it was a non issue. Another had no convictions, but nine felony arrests (not disclosed, or even verbally brought up) which made other canidates look better. If one of your family members has a pending felony trial you might want to bring it up. If your ex is going to say all kinds of stuff, beat them to the punch. The more info you disclose the cheaper and easier the BG will be to the department. Letting them know you understand the cost and resources involved with your BG is a good step in becoming employed. Remember everyone makes mistakes, good cops don't try to cover them up.
