Okay, wow. I just got an email from Orange that I'm invited to begin the selection process (I just applied the other day). The written and PAT is on Saturday. I'm not too worried about the written because my English/grammar/logic is decent.

I'm a little concerned about the PAT because I can't find what the tests are. not to mention I'd consider myself out of shape to what I was 6 months ago. It does say that if I can't make I could ask to be considered at the next testing phase. So if anyone knows what their PAT is, I would really appreciate it so can decide to go for it or not. Thanks :)

I didn't expect things to get moving so quick!

Nice try Cruz...the test you pulled was from the OCSD site, not the Orange PD site.

Orange PD tests out of Golden West College...the course is near the administration building. You may practice there just about any time of the day. The test consists of:

Obstacle course (running, cutting angles, skipping over a couple of cement blocks, and jumping over a short saw horse. Very easy, especially if you are a good sprinter.

Jump over a solid 6' wood wall...sprint about 20-25 yards.

Jump over a 6' chain link fence...spint about 20-25 yards.

Drag a 160 pound dummy approximately 30-45 feet.

500 yard run on a track.

All above events are timed, and you will receive a cumulative score at the end.

Good luck.

It's the typical POST test. They want you to score 386, which I believe is the minimum score all LEOs must get to get their certification. But, in order to be considered academy-ready, they want you at 450 points. Unfortunately for me, I don't see that happening (the 450, not the 386).

They seemed like a nice department with a positive outlook for the future (lots of growth scheduled in their sphere of influence). If I make some super-leaps with my training (I'd say I'm working my butt off, but really, I'm adding lots of muscle), I'd definitely go back and try again.

BTW, they use the POST T-score, so if you already received one in the last six months, you don't need to test again. Next test/PAT date is May 17. :)

Maybe 450 IS attainable. I took a PAT today and got 431!!!! This is huge for little (5-foot-two-inches) me. Definitely my best score ever. I guess all those pull-ups are helping. Yippee!!!

Nothing wrong with quoting yourself! Sometimes a little monologue can be fun :D

OP...don't know if you've taken the PAT yet but you need to prepare for this. LASD STARS has a nice little obstacle course located on Telegraph Rd and Valley View Ave, just west of the academy grounds. You'll be able to do the 6' fence, 6' wall, 100+ yard sprint and 500 yard run. Rio Hondo Police Academy has all of that plus a 3' beam where you need to go over it while keeping yourself as low as possible, a 10' sewer grate-like to crawl through, window type of post to go through, sand pit to crawl in, side stepping obstacle, followed by a balancing beam. The nice thing about Rio Hondo is it's very secluded.

Course is located on the Administration of Justice area. 60 fwy, exit Peck Road. Go south on Peck Rd. About 2 miles down, take a left on Workman Mill Rd, approx. 500 ft take a right on North Dr (the first opening after making a left on Workman Mill Rd). Drive up the hill for 700 ft until the first opening on the left hand side. Continue up the driveway until the dirt parking lot on the left hand side. Obstacle course is below the dirt lot.

Do those academies (Stars, Rio Hondo) allow public access? I was told to stay away from OCSA because you'd be treated like a suspect -- no public allowed. Goldenwest, on the other hand, is open to the public. It's on school grounds, which gives it pretty easy access.

I do like the obstacle course at OCSA -- a 3-foot sawhorse, switchbacks, two walls, balance beam, belly-busters (4-foot obstcles), monkey bars and a window to climb through. Fun! :)

I had the honors of testing at OCSA (Salinaz) when I was with them and no the obstacle course is not open to the public. I don't know about the Tustin facility, but I'm guessing the same. STARS is open to the public, no gates whatsoever. If you liked OCSA's, Rio Hondo has all that you mentioned. Sorry I didn't know the technical names of them. Go on a weekend and park your vehicle all the way to the bottom where the obstacle course is located. It's next to the academy, not in it.
