Hello,

Am curious how big an obstacle the lack of a bachelor's degree is to getting hired with one of the above mentioned federal agencies. That along with the fact that i have no real law enforcement experience outside of currently working dispatch while I go to school.

Quick synopsis of my qualifications:

6yrs Military(3rd Special Forces, 82nd Airborne)
Fluent in Arabic/Spanish
EMT/B
Various Driving/Shooting Schools(MidSouth/GryphonGroup/Blackwater)

I do have 70-80 college credits but they are spread along different disciplines so im farther away from an actual degree than it looks.

W/O the degree ICE/USMS is your shot, with ICE you have the CBPO and IEA just keep an eye out for testing. With USMS keep your eye out for DEO positions then get an in-house to Deputy. Or you can keep an eye on FCIP hiring with USMS its goin to be awhile til they test but its already been awhile so who knows.

With what you currently have I would look into USSS/UD-PFPA/PPD-CIA/Police-NSA/Police

Eh, CBPO is CBP and I'm guessing you don't want to stand in a booth as a CBPO or sit at a desk like many IEA's... ICE/OI is a strange process to say the least and they opened and closed their process in about 2 days back in 01/08.

ATF just had a big hiring event, so don't expect that to open back up any time soon. Depending on who you ask DEA is either hiring hundreds of agents or is under a hiriing freeze (I have no idea which one, maybe both).

I know the FBI and some of the intel agencies would like your language training. Maybe keep an eye out for a 0084 opening from DOE/NNSA.

My advice to anyone looking at going federal is to figure out what you want to do. Most of the agencies specialize in a certain field of law, which one interests you?

Try this, the FBI is looking for people with tactical skills for HRT if your interested. It doesn't look like they are looking education. You could also call a recruiter, tell them what your skills/qualifications are and they can tell you if you would be eligible.

Pretty sure all FBI agents require BA/BS, not positive if HRT falls under those guidelines.

I would look at some state gigs or if you want to go federal check out BP, UD, CIA, US Park, and FAMS. Getting your BA/BS is critical and will help greatly getting that magic 1811 job.

ICA/SA, DEA, FBI, and most 1811 jobs are very very hard to get, best of luck.

*Candidates for the position of FBI Special Agent must possess a four-year college degree and three years of professional work experience; be available for assignment anywhere in the FBI's jurisdiction; be between the ages of 23 and 36; be in excellent physical condition with the ability to pass a rigorous physical fitness test; and consent to a complete background investigation, drug test, and polygraph. HRT Operators are Special Agents first, and will have investigative and managerial career opportunities in the FBI following their HRT assignment.

While a few agencies technically will hire 1811s without a college degree, it's extremely rare that they actually do. Those that would qualify without a degree would need to have several years of experience conducting complex felony criminal investigations. The rare cases I've seen where someone got picked up without a degree they had been a detective with a local PD or SO, AND most had been assigned to a federal task force so they actually had experience investigating federal cases that would be prosecuted in federal court.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I'm just trying to let you know the reality of the situation.

You want decent pay I would go to CBPO or BP and move your way up. you will go up to a GS 11 as a journeyman. Then you can apply to other agencies who are looking for equivilant of your pay grade.

for example. You go up to a GS11 in 4 years in Border Patrol or CBPO and then you search around usajobs that are hiring 1811s (criminal investigator) The problem with that plan is that to get hired as an 1811 without a college degree the applicant must have qualifying LE experience, which is defined as several years of conducting complex felony investigations. Uniformed LE jobs such as BP or CBP will not meet those requirements.and I believe FBI are looking for GS9s or masters degree. You can go in as a GS9 step 10 persay. For 1811 jobs the FBI requires a bachelor's degree, and an advanced degree is not required. Further, all new FBI 1811s start at GS-10. Prior federal time might get someone a higher step, but all agents regardless of previous experience (or lack thereof) will start at GS-10. Also, the FBI does require a bachelor's degree, so without it, regardless of prior experience the person would not be eligible.ICE USS and USMS are the only ones I know that are currently hiring entrance level GS5sWell I know ATF hires GS-5s based on their most recent hiring announcements, and I also have seen several OIGs that had announcements that included GS-5 openings.

Tactical skills, without a degree, are not going to be enough to get hired with the FBI as an agent. There are too many people in the pool with tactical skills AND a degree.

I put down having a degree but I won't technically have till end of june would that be fine?

Most agencies will let you apply ahead of your actual graduation, but not by much. I don't know what the time limit is for the FBI right now.

a cbpo i work with was hired under the ice gs-9 lateral announcement last august and he does not have a degree or experience with investigations. in this case, "its who you know!"

if your dad is an ice s/a, well, im sure you wont have a problem getting a job without a degree.

9 months ahead of graduation is what my FO recruiter told our group.
