Hello,
I was wondering where are good places to live, for a new recruit around the lapd academy?
Live out of town and need to relocate, thanks!

My understanding is that LAPD runs their academy out of several locations... Part of it on the Westside, part in the original Elysian Park academy, and EVOC training in the Valley. Guess you might want to figure out a centralized spot if this is true.

I believe you are correct.
Hopefully someone can post up decent locations before I go to bed. Thanks!

Yep, we started off going to EP and ARTC and now spend much of our time between Davis and ARTC. I guess the best place to live would be somewhere in the middle of the three locations, maybe culver city. You could always carpool too. A lot of my classmates carpool from places like the OC, pasadena, whittier, etc.

How is Culver City in the middle of the three?
If you don't want to live in the City of Los Angeles, which I wouldn't recommend, I would suggest Burbank. Burbank has lots of apartments, is close to a number of major highways and is close to being in the middle of all three academies.
You're 15 minutes from Elysian Park, 15 minutes from Granada Hills and about 30 minutes from Westchester. (These are the three area where the academies are located.) That's about the best you'll do without living in LA. I lived in Burbank for 12 years and enjoyed living there.

Thanks for your reply! Carpooling is not really an option for me since I live pretty far.

If LAPD is like the LASD academy, you WILL be carpooling with at least one other cadet during the academy.....
as far as a place to live while going through the academy, both Burbank and Glendale are decent....they are just up the 5 freeway from the main academy....

Okay guys, thanks!
In the June 23rd Academy, will drive down to Burbank/Glendale early June and see what I can find/like.

You might want to pull up Burbank real estate on-line, you can find lots of apartments that way.
Where are you coming from?

I mentioned carpooling because you don't have to live in LA, as several other people have pointed out. Burbank sounds good and I'm sure you'll find someone who lives nearby to carpool with. You don't have to carpool in the LAPD academy, but I'd recommend it. After a month or so they'll start to allow you to park closer to the buildings if you're carpooling (Davis we need 3 people in order to park inside). At ARTC we can park in the back w/o carpooling.
Another benefit to carpooling is that if you aren't driving, you can catch a few extra Z's. Better yet, if you and your carpool buddies are high speed low drag recruits, you can quiz each other on whatever you're covering.
You'll be able to meet the other recruits at orientation and that is where you'll probably meet people in the same area.
Good luck!

Suggestion No. 1 - Invest in a "Thomas Guide" for Los Angeles County.
Right now you can Mapquest or Google these three addresses:
ARTC - 5651 West Manchester Blvd, L.A. 90045
Davis/EVOC - 12001 Blucher Avenue, Granada Hills 91340
Elysian Park Police Academy - 1880 North Academy Drive, L.A. 90012
LA Copper is right about Burbank...your travel times to/from ARTC should not put you in the way of too much LAX traffic, due to early start/EOW times. If they still have an orientation before the start of the academy. Make carpool friends right away, if not roommates to share rent/rooms if you have to.
Before I retired, I suggested that LAPD consider converting to a live-in academy, or even just assist with housing info. I'll never forget meeting recruits who were starting, "next week" and were coming from out-of-state, not knowing where to live.

I second that recommendation for Burbank. I've been hanging out there with a gal and love it. Safe, few dirtbags, plenty of amenities in their downtown, lots of apartments to chose from. Check Burbank rental listings on Craigslist.

I hear compton is pretty cheap. Go there you can save tons of cash.
Compared to "Bagdhad by the Bay" where you live, everything in California's cheaper, including 90210.

Good luck! Not to mention the $$$ you'll save on gas....Gas will probably be four bucks a gallon in June

Try the Loz Feliz and Silverlake areas.
Depends on your budget. Santa Monica near I-10 and I-405 would be convenient to all three academies.
There are a lot of new apartments just West of the 110 in downtown LA. That is very close to the old academy, and an easy freeway commute to the other locations, provided you start early. I-10 is now worse going westbound in the morning than going eastbound (into downtown).

I lived in Southbay, Hermosa. Close to ARTC, a bit tougher to get HOME from davis but you start so early morning traffic is very light. If you want to be close to the beach and ARTC I suggest playa del rey, Manhattan beach or Hermosa beach. A bit pricey but there is nothing like studying LD's while sitting on the beach.

I did Compton for a year and thats all I could take. Too many shootings . I thought I could hang growing up near the area but Compton is a battle zone. Glendale, Burbank and Culver City would be a good starting point. LA does have some good pockets in the Valley that aren't too bad but they can be pricy like Encino, Winnetka, Northridge and Chatsworth to name a few...
