Oh, it's about SDPD FAQ's. At first glance, the title of your thread appears to be Sdpd Fag :p

Looking at it now, you're right....
As far as the SDSD goes, they would be the next logical choice, but SDPD has always been my first choice. I would have applied there before I became a deputy if it werent for the wife's current job in LA (she makes more $$$ ).

LOL love that patrol vehicle. Must be Encinitas patrol station. I have been at both departments and I was very impressed with SDSO in the way of training and handeling of laterals. At SDPD there was not lateral incintive pay ($5000.00) and you had to go through the entire FTO program like a brand new recruit (and in many ways treated like such). Also the FTO Admin has washed out a lot of incoming hires (and I mean a lot).
At SDSO, training was accelerated based on experience and there was a nice signing bonus. Out on patrol, we did not need to get permission from a booking SGT or a LT before we took out prisoners to jail. I felt that the SDSO trusted us in our decision making and we were more accountable. Of course that comes with more responsiblity. Please PM me if you want more details and good luck.

Dude come over to SDSD and just think of the money you'll save on uniforms... :) All the laterals are going out to patrol or courts if they prefer. Whereabouts in San Diego do you think you'll be living? If you are in North County you can get into the Vista Station and if you live down south you can request Lemon Grove. Both stations are busy for San Diego County. We'll welcome you with open arms!

A SDPD stopped by the academy and said there's an opening for 200 positions.

First off, Id like to briefly introduce myself. I am a Los Angeles County Deputy with about 1.5 years on. I have been reading this site as a guest for quite some time now (even before I became a deputy), but only now have I felt it necessary to create a logon and post a question. The reason I am asking about SDPD is simple, my wife received a great job offer in South San Diego and we will be relocating. Rather than face the prospect of a long commute, I am hoping to lateral (as a PO I) to my childhood dream department. I know there are a few SDPD officers here on this site, and hopefully I will be able to bounce a few questions off of you privately. However, rather than bore everyone with the specifics of my process (i.e. "what are my chances?") I thought it would be better to start an FAQ thread for the dept. A lot of info is available on SDPD through this site, but there are a few pieces of info that are difficult to track down. So, with that being said, these are a few of the questions that I have yet to find answers to:
-Are there certain "faster" stations that are considered better for your resume when applying for special assignments (central, mid-city, southern, etc)?
-I read somewhere on this site that you generally have a say in whether you ride in a two or one man car, is that true?
-How large is the vice squad and how difficult is it to pick up a spot?
-Same question for Auto theft
-What responsibilities does the 'border team' unit have? What exactly are they responsible for?
-Is FTO a sought after position or has it lost some of its luster in recent years?
-What is the typical level of micro-management experienced by most officers, and does that vary from station to station?
Obviously these questions are pretty specific, so if anyone with the answers feels they would be more appropirate for PM responses, please feel free to send me a message. Thanks a ton to everyone who makes this site such a great source of information, as well as all the insightful posters who dedicate so much time to keeping us all informed.

- not necessarily, if u have focused on whatever type of enforcement your looking to get into; FI'd a lot of gang members if u want to get into gangs, etc... that's what they look for, and you can do that in almost every division
- yes you do have a say on one or two man unit, it usually depends on staffing
- vice is pretty good size, i don't know how many officers there are, it's considered an investigations slot so will take several years to get, same with auto theft
- the border crime suppression team used to be much bigger, now they just focus on crimes committed on the border, pro-active, not reactive
- FTO is still pretty sought after, pretty nice bonus too
- micro-management does vary from station to station, some stations are worse or better than others, probably pretty similar up in LASD

Thank you for the reply sir, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. Yes, micro-management with LASD depends on the supervisor. In general, I think we enjoy a decent amount of freedom while at work. Its also good to hear the FTO still has a lot of pride associated with the position.

No problem, ya FTO is definitely still pretty sought after, we just had a bunch of people go through the process to become one, and many others who wanted to put in for it. If you have any other questions, feel free to pm me.

Just to hit on a couple of quick things and add to beachcop... The "fast" stations are generally, Mid-City, Central and Southeast. If you want to promote or move to a special assignment, it's better to come out of there, though it's not mandatory or always the case.
The border team deals with the drunk 18 year olds that come across the border. It's not "lines and shadows" anymore.
Having volunteered for another agency, and worked for another in the IE prior to coming to SDPD, I believe (despite the misinformation the well intended SO people on this forum state) it is probably the least micromanaged agency in so cal, with the exception of maybe CHP. There are micromanaging Sgts out there, particularly at a couple of commands in specific. But, by and large, as long as you are working, you can do whatever you want.
Investigations assignments are hard to get. Usually it takes 10 years plus to get them. And then you have to put your "time in" at a assignment not so well coveted (DV, Child Abuse, etc), before getting a "sexy" assignment like narcs, auto theft, robbery, etc

10 years isn't a long time to wait for those premier assignments, so thats good news. Thank you for the info Sir, I appreciate it very much. I am filling out my packet as we speak and soon it will be in your colleague's hands.
