If any one can answer a few of my questions, I would really appreciate it. I am an out of state (Arizona) OSP applicant and I was wondering how long the process takes for those of us who do not live in Oregon or a bordering state. I tested back in November and I called in February and was told my packet was awaiting on a background investigator to be assigned to it. I have called about twice a month since and have received the same answer each time. Also, a OSP rank question, once you graduate the academy do you move from a recruit to a trooper or is that after your probationary period has expired?

I can't help with the second question,

But... everything I have heard about the OSP hiring process is... slow.

I was talking with a guy from Springfield PD who was saying a friend got hired with them in 9 months, in state.... and he was saying how great that was compared to normal.

Thanks for the information. I found out today through a credit monitoring service I have that OSP pulled my credit report last week, so hopefully that's a good sign.

I talked with OSP about 3-4 weeks ago about my testing process. They told me I was moving onto the BI. The Sgt. told me that they had acquired funds to hire an investigator in WA to perform my background. Your a lot farther from OR than I am so I couldn't image them sending a OR investigator if they won't send one over the boarder to WA.

Good luck to you!

Well I guess all I can do is wait. Although, I was told back in Feb by the recruiting section SGT that there were a few of us from AZ, and that she was just waiting for their out of state investigator to return from back east somewhere. When he returned, he would come here and interview all of us individually. Also, on the OSP web site there is an article about them sending a recruiting team to Marine Corps bases in Southern California for a career fair. So, I doubt that they would forgo hiring qualified out of state candidates due to their distance from Oregon.

Well I received my letter from OSP today, stating I was moving into the BI phase, and that there would be "some delay in my investigation do to out of state travel that the investigator will have to make". Well that's a good sign I guess. We shall see how long the BI takes, hopefully it does not take the 16 months my TS clearance SSBI took.

I received a letter today as well. Mine mentioned a delay also. I hope it doesn't take that long either. So far the process has been pretty smooth and quick.

Are you currently a LEO? I am just graduating from college. My wife and kids are excited to be moving on and getting a real job. Best of luck!

To answer your question, no I am not a LEO. I am ex-military who is very bored in college and trying not to spend another 120 degree summer in Arizona.

LoL! Well I think you will like Oregon. You will experience all four seasons. Summers may hit 100 degrees, but not much higher.

What is your degree in? Which branch of the military did you serve in?
My degree is actually in business education. I am currently student teaching. I discovered that I should have just done the LEO thing 5 years ago. School is not my thing and now I have a degree in teaching. Go figure!

I am working towards a justice studies degree, but I still have a few years left. I used to be in the Army but I separated in Dec of 06 after 10 years. Do you happen to know if the pre-academy training for OSP is still at Camp Rilea or have they consolidated all training at DPSST?

Thank you, I could not find any information on the rank progression anywhere. I had another question, how does the selection process go when assigning recruit troopers to either patrol or fish and wildlife. Do you volunteer or are you assigned?

Trooper3882,

I have a question I was hoping you might be able to provide some insight on. Do you work with or know of any OSP troopers that were hired as out of state applicants from states that did not border Oregon? If so, how long approximately did it take them to get hired? I live in AZ and I am at 6 months since I took my initial test with OSP. I received my letter that I was selected to go into the BG phase last month but I have heard nothing since. I know it's a long process but some time frame would be great.

How is the BI going? Have you had your interview yet?

Yeah he called yesterday and said he dropped my packet off to his boss. He said his boss would look at it today and then pass it onto the hiring board. He said my packet looked really good and he was confident I would be good to go. So is your Aug academy date for DPSST basic police or is it for OSP Pre-academy?

I am not sure if my start date is pre or basic academy. I will email the Salem office for clarification. I'm thinking it is pre.

Do you happen to know if the hiring board meets once a month or is it a continual process throughout the month? I am hoping to get in the August academy but we shall see. I will be up there next week for an interview for a USFS LEO position, so whoever comes with a conditional offer first I will go with them

I think that the main office in Salem might be fast tracking some interviews. It has been mentioned to me that there is a September class also. Best of luck with the USFS LE gig. That sound cool too.
