So my wife and I and some friends went to watch this movie. Movie wise it was great. The movie had lots of twists and turns and plenty of action. I felt it was a cross between The Departed and Training Day.
The reason Im posting this is: Why is LAPD always being portrayed as Dirty?
The unit in the movie was "Vice Special", im not sure if that unit actually exsists inside of LAPD, but if it did Its seems like the only detectives who'd make that squad are the ones who are willing to walk up right to the line that distinguishes a good/dirty cop.
If I had the privilege to work for LAPD, I feel movies like that would offend me as an actual LAPD Ofc.
Anyway if you got some time off and want to do dinner and a movie, check it out.

Eh, just a movie. There have been dozens about LAPD special units, none of which exist. Training Day, some movie Cuba Gooding Jr did, can't remember it right now... What offends me is that they picked Keanu Reeves to play an LAPD copper. yeah right.

Lol. We had an instructor SPECIFICALLY mention that part of Speed when Keanu Reaves shot through his partner to shoot the suspect and for us to NEVER do such a thing. hahaha.

Ugh, I had blocked speed from my memory completely. "shoot the hostage" then get sued, fired and criminally prosecuted. Stupid Keanu Reeves.....mumbling....

Good flick, all-star cast...I have a few observations...
1. I noticed Keanu Reeves' character was addressed to as "Detective" but that he wore three stripes, like a sergeant. I considered that maybe "Detective III's" wear three stripes but I've never met nor seen one...
2. Keanu Reeves' character also referred to "gunfighting" and being a "gunfighter" on several instances. I wonder if he was trained at ITTS...
3. One of the undercover LASO narcs was "Bone" from the Athens Park Bloods. He was also an actor and advisor in the movie "Training Day" and even made a documentary on HBO about the Athens Park Bloods called "Bastards of the Party..."
4. Lastly, it was pretty cool to see Chief Gates in his cameo role...

No-Keenu has the LAPD look ( think "jim Reed" character from ADAM 12) -Tall, lean , square jawed-thats how LAPD used to turn them out from the academy ,no matter what race the recruit was ( like i sad ."used to"- my old academy is GONE,as PC and the chili cheese fries,XBOX generation can possible come into the academy healthy and in shape- they need several months to pass physical training that barely harder than H.S. PT!!!!!) People like to BASH LAPD becuase it ISN'T an EAST coast Dept- where corruption, and fat cops are a norm- thus,by proxy, bashing all of Calif L.E.( alot of the writers are from the eastcoast, and being a cop there isn't exactly thought of as being a good job, like out here !) ever notice how EVERY LAPD slip up is magnfied 10X by the media- recently LASD dumped a suspect and even tiny el Segundo PD blasted a punk thug to hell-very litle mention of it in the media- BUT if LAPD had been shot at or did the shooting, the local press would have interviewed police analyst,ACLU pootbutts who claim LAPD is trigger happy and didn't give the suspect a chance,as well as the suspects family ( who would have showed a faded old picture of the criminal when he was a little kid-the last time that animal resembled a human being) while some of us tend to poke fun at our LAPD brethren ,take comfort in the fact that where we work we don't have to go thru the same B.S. they often do-alot of them are good guys who DESERVE better.....

METRO,then an LAPD thing- They preach it to you in the academy-at least they DID back in the day- and in reality, working in L.A. you NEED to think that way!!!

Great movie. Great use of law enforcement jargon. Ex. exigent circumstances, caper, gunfighter/gunslinger, jamming guys up, etc. Worth the 10 bucks to see it in the theater in my opinion.

Great imput guys! I didn't know Detectives wore three stripes; I figured "Bone" was still a thug, just like Marroquin and his "No Guns."

Yea when I heard that "Gangsta" say Exigent Circumstances i was like WTF?!?! What f*ckin dirt bag knows that term?
Then again some of these a holes know more about the job than the officers who work it.
I recommend seeing it, if youre gun-ho and like jammin foo's up then youll definetly start your next shift with the itch to jam anyone up who looks at funny!

Good flick as far as entertainment purposes go. Just don't look at it from an officer's point of view.
Reeves is a D-2 in the movie. I thought he looked good in uniform, just as he did in the movie Speed.
The Honor Guard at the funeral are some of the real LAPD Honor Guard folks, I recognized three of them.
It was nice to see Chief Gates looking sharp in his uniform but I was kinda disappointed that he would associate himself with a movie that shows police (and LAPD in particular) as bad cops. I'm surprised he did it since he lived/lives and breaths LAPD.
A lot of the jargon was indeed west coast police jargon.

Stopped a Compton gangster in Watts one night and he made some comment about he'd rather get stopped by us that LASD anytime. Of course I had to ask why and he said "when you guys shoot us a lot of us live, the sheriffs make sure they kill your a**"

Reeves certainly looks the part in his uniform. His ribbons are Medal of Valor, Police Commission Unit Citation, and Police Meritorious Achievement Medal. His shooting medal is Distinguished Expert (DX) meaning an average high score (per month) of 385+/400 for six months straight. Estimates are that only 100-300, out of 9000+, LAPD cops have that rating at any given time.
In regards to the funeral scene, it was filmed at the cemetary at Washington & Normandie. I cruised through, in my B&W, and saw them filming it. The Honor Guard's shoulder cords are on the wrong shoulders...right instead of left. Otherwise they, too, looked the part.
With all these kids, I don't get to many "big people movies" these days...so I won't be seeing Street Kings, Lakeview Terrace, or Righteous Kill.

:cool:I think Hollywood definitely has changed things on how they protray LAPD. If you remember we had shows like Adam 12 and the like. They seemed to have always had an heroic portrayl of the LAPD Officer. But true, nowadays things seeme dto be different such as the movie Training Day. Why is that? Probably because it is popular. LAPD sure does have an image problem and I think the media is mostly to blame. True, LAPD probably has a couple of bad apples, and what huge department doesn't. People forget that we are all human and make mistakes. I havent seen this movie yet and am not a big Reeves fan. But I will check it out for the story.

Shazzam, I love your avatar, I used to love watching Gomer when I was a kid!
Back in the Adam-12 days Hollywood really didn't make too many anti-cop movies.. maybe Serpico I guess. I'm sure there were a few but not like today. Today, it seems more fashionable to do so. Hollywood happens to be in the City of Los Angeles so it makes it easy and cheaper for movie makers. I guess it doesn't hurt that the Department is kind of famous for different reasons.

Despite the bad image of LAPD, I would recommend Street Kings. Lots of action, and some funny parts too. Made me want to buy a nice 1911 .45 too.

And "Righteous Kill", for those who saw the preview to this. I hope we get the same quality of film as the last time those two actors got together..... "HEAT" One of the best movies of all time!

Something just doesn't feel right when people want to buy a particular type of firearm because they see it in a movie.

I'm well aware of those two idiots watching that movie, and becoming inspired. That doesn't make it any less of a great movie. And that doesnt mean that everyone who enjoys it is a psycho bank robber.
And I guess the comment about the .45 didn't translate very well. I've wanted a new 1911 for a while. Ever since I fired kimber's version. I just thought Keanu's looked pretty nice.

,,yeah but the Tom Ludlow character did most of his "work" with a S&W 4506-watch the movie again- It was an idiot fare ,best relgated to soon to be home release.Really "tired" of secret "rafael perez" style inner corruption conspiracy theory movies.Better film? Keanus' character is about to be drummed out of the dept for multiple I.A.s(after shooting up the Korean kiddie rapists- and the city is facing a multi million dollar lawsuit), goes to his blk buddy to figure out how to start a security company( they argue and fist fight over how much its gonna cost, then go out to the parking lot to drink and b*tch about women and how the job sucks) then they both get shot and wounded by the korean owner of the liqour store who is shooting at the two crack headed, eerrr"corrupted" sheriffs deputies-who themselves are angry over having been fired by their dept over another bogus I.A.-the deputies get arrested and end up on probation, then later work for ludlows' half assed security company, meanwhile ludlow and his former partner sue the liquor store owner for injuries incurred becuase the punk asssed city of L.A. won't pay the workers comp for an "off duty injury".tom ludlow becomes angry becuase the new hip blond copper investigating the shooting ends up screwing his girlfriend, ludlow rides a desk in the lowest level of the decrepit PAB bldg, and his former "pro cop" capt soon becomes a cop hating ,community special interest butt smooching city councilman with a "taste" for 17 yr old el salvadorean H.S. intern girls. How does it end? Ludlow makes up with his former Blk partner( whose wife has now left him and taken him for every dime he had) and they end up going fishing every thurs on a rickety charter boat in Long beach ,drinking bud lites to curve their alcoholic tendencies...
Damn ! now thats a "Cop movie" !!!!!! or actually it would be a documentary as its closer to reality than this "keanu needed a paycheck" film...Somehow though if you think that some weed headed gangsters are gonna' get the idea to score 2 swedish K gustaf 45 9mm subguns and go plainclothes cop hunting in southern cali- think again. The locals johhny laws from OC to L.A. and all parts around have been doing a "good job" of pumping lead into the local badguys lately- all movie fanstasy aside...

NOPE- your "ever so cool" INVADERS,eeerrrr "eastcoast transplants" ,dying to get into the movie industry and live the Westcoast /hollywood lifestyle( while rudely waiting table here and Complaining about what a "wonderful" life they left in snow bound, grimey streets of the east). Every time a show/movie about westcoast cops is made, they just wet their pants to throw in some inaccurate "eastcoast" terminology or procedure ( we don't call "suspects" here "perps" ,or "franks" -felons , "skells" -WTF is a "skell" ???? funny but I work with a former eastcoast PD guy who loves to "tell " about how squeeky clean we live compared to his rough and rowdy days of "real policing" and he often has some interesting things to say about how "things are done" in his old dept.(he's currently facing suspension for some of his eastcoast style"real police" behavior)......... as fior that NPR and ACLU remark- eastcoasters have it "gravy" ,here in the Westcoast,we have that little COP HATING 9th circuit federal court constantly on our rears, and the ACLU has alot MORE juice out here than there ......
