Hello,

I live in Sweden, and the situation for those who want to become Law enforcement officers is not nearly as good as it is in the US.

I don't have the exact numbers, but i think that maybe one out of 20 that applies gets the chance to go through the education. So for a mediocre guy like myself their is very little chance to become a police officer in my home country.

So my question to to you guys are:

what you think of a swede working as Sheriff Deputy in the US, how open are law enforcement officers to foreign people working in their counties?

And what do the schools opinons, could they be willing to let me in to the programs?

Greetings,
Carl

The question of non-US citizens working as law enforcement officers has been asked and answered several times before. Just search these forums...you should find several of threads. But if you don't want to do that, then contact the recruiter of a few of the agencies you would like to work for and ask the policy of hiring non-citizens. I would suggest moving here LEGALLY!!!, then establish a good work history, earn at least a bachelor's degree. After that if you have been here long enough, apply for citizenship, then there will be more LEO opportunities opened up to you.

Thank you for your answers, and excuse me for not searching the forums before starting my thread.

But the main reason for me asking isn't to get info about the formal parts, but about what you guys think about a swede working in your field, so to speak.

Would it be easier for me to get a job if i work maybe as a security guard as a beginning? I guess i could get some good connections with the right people there.

I don't think any officer on here would mind working with a person from any country as long as that person met the requirements to be an officer. As long as I know that my co-workers are able to back me up when the $hit hits the fan, I don't care where they are from.
As far as working as a security guard, that will not give you an edge over other applicants. Police recruiters look for someone with a good employment record. Good attendance, honest work, not working anywhere questionable (bars, strip clubs etc...), not switching jobs every couple of months. If you want to make connections I would suggest working for a police department as a civillian, that does not require citzenship. Dispatcher, records clerk, crossing guard, etc... I know a guy who was a cop in England, he moved here to the states, and he became a medical examiner while working towards his citizenship. Some security guard companies also require citizenship. Like stated above military service is a good route to go.

Or you could go the US Military route. A lot of Mexicans have gotten their ID's through that. Plus you will get experience, education paid, and probably have an LE job waiting for you when you get out.
Does the Army hire non GC holder?
Will they help to get a working permission?
Do you have any contacts to the Army that can help to become soldier for non GC holders?
I'm a LEO from Germany and searching a way to immigrate to the USA.
I had contact more than 60 PD's in the USA. Most of them didn't answer my Email.

@Carl_Swe:
You dont need to contact Prince William County PD. I did last month, that is what the Recruitment and Selection Supervisor,First Sergeant Kearns, replied:

State of Virginia requirements in becoming a police officer include actively in the process of gaining US Citizenship. Evidence of being active in this process must be submitted as you navigate the applicant process with our agency.

Hej! Nice to see a fellow Swede. Well, I'm half Swedish if that counts. But as you were saying 1 in 20 get a chance to go through training, well, that is pretty good odds! For my agency, they hire maybe 1 in a 1000 applicants. Plus it would be cool to be the Polis in Sweden. You get to drive Volvo's! When I was in Stockholm, I saw guys riding ATV's in the street and the Polis were having a great time with them. Not to mention that the women are all gorgeous there. Im going off into tangents. Good luck on your quest.

Just call an Army recruiter, they should have all the answers.
I did, here is the answer:

Thank you for your interest in the United States Army.

You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National or a legal resident alien of the U.S.; you are not qualified to enlist in the United States Army. Any office of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service can provide information concerning entry as a resident alien. Their home page is: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis their number is 1-800-375-5283 (inside the U.S. only). We cannot assist or sponsor you into the USA. Once you have obtained an I-551 (green card) you can begin the process for enlistment.

FYI, PWCPD is different that the Sheriff's Office, I would try to the Sheriff's office.;)
Of course you are right. I read your posting wrong.
