I currently know one 1811 with the VA who has successfully convinced his boss to allow him to serve as a reserve deputy with a local sheriff's office. I know this isnt the norm, but do ya'll think it would be easier to do if I was in a non-covered, non-off duty gun toting fed law enforcement position?

Wow! That's unusual. My agency will not allow me to carry a firearm for any other purpose than mission related activities and standard off duty carry. They have a legitimate concern about liability.
I think if you're a FLEO (gun toting or not), agencies will be hesitant to allow you to be a reserve LEO.

Most dept. general orders or procedures prohibit this without written permission, which i understand is impossible to get.

When I was employed with CBP, I was given permission to work as a reserve deputy sheriff for a local county. The only provision was that I was NOT allowed to carry my CBP issued firearm while on SO patrol and that my training and subsequent reserve time would not conflict with my CBP schedule in any way.

That is really encouraging hearing that a few of ya'll are current reserve leos. How did ya'll go about getting approval?

It might be a little different for me since I've been an RPO for 4 years now and with CBP for 7 months, but it really wasn't an issue at all. I made it clear on my first few days that I wanted to stay on with the other agency as well and there really wasn't any objection. Maybe I'm just lucky and have good managers.
