How does the pay of a police officer in California compare to the cost of living there?

Depends where you are. If you are a CHP officer living in the rural areas, you can live pretty darned well. If you work for a lot of agencies in the Santa Cruz area, you will have a hard time finding a house to afford, and will probably wind up lateralling to Santa Clara County.

Santa Clara County and San Mateo County agencies are pretty good to live a middle/upper-middle class lifestyle... that is if you spend your money right... lots of people i work with have a two hour commute though cause they bought homes way out in places I couldn't find on a map.

I live 12 minutes from HQ and I am able to save more than 60% of my monthly earnings.

If you wanna live in So. Cal, you'll have to work a ton of overtime to be able to have a nice house in a decent area.

I say it's about equal. We get paid a chunk of change but houses cost a chunk also...and gas is an arm and a leg plus half of your torso!

The truth so finely spoken, hear her! It seems like we get paid well, but I am just about in the middle of things, but comfortable and still pleased to go to work... ;)

It's all about living within your means. Don't go out and go crazy with the huge car payments, big giant fancy wheels, gold teeth, dune buggy, boat, boob job on the wife, etc. Just pace yourself and pick up some overtime here and there and be reasonable with the finances. Buy an old house in a half way decent area and wait it out for a few years and build up some equity....sell the house and upgrade a little and bam...you'll be on your way.

When was the last time you hit the pumps bro...? I recall $75.00 to fill up a Chevy Tahoe yesterday at $3.80 a gallon...

Try not to live off of your great credit to much also... You'll turn around and go dam what happened. You'll also be that guy posting his boats, guns and motorcycles on the board "For Sale"...

How many of you would take a pay cut if you became in officer?

Or if you are currently an officer, did you take a pay cut from your prior job?
