Yes or no answer in the poll please.

I have my opinion, but am interested in the opinion of others.

You've intercepted a vehicle and you are speaking with the driver.

Is it safer for you to leave the driver in their car (routine intercept) or have them exit the vehicle.

Safer for personal safety tactical perspective.

For what offense is the vehicle/driver a suspect?

I think that really depends on a lot of factors. You could say that most bad guys hide their guns under the seat, so taking him out of the vehicle removes him from immediate access to the weapon.

Or, you could say, getting him out of the vehicle gives you less reaction time should he try to pull a gun from the waistband. If I remove a suspect during a stop, I will sometimes put them in cuffs and detain them , until I am done with the stop. For example I stop a car and smell marijuana, Suspect comes out, goes in cuffs, and then I search the car. If I find like a joint or small zip, they may get a criminal citation and get released. If they find a large amount they go to jail.... there are no hard and fast rules in LE, except a few like ALWAYS wear your vest, always have your gun loaded, make sure the disp. knows where you are,,

Thanks for the votes people.

My guess was that it is generally safer to leave them in the car, and that was my own opinion.

I base the opinion n the fact that most assaults take place outside the car for the simple reason that this is where the cop is! So the driver has to exited in order to become physical.

I understand that every situation is different and a lot of the decision will depend on what's known about the driver.

Thanks once again for the replies.

Of course it is normally safer to leave em in the car, but if they are nervous or have a good history they are coming out so I can take a look around. That is when it is more likely to be dangerous anyways so I guess it is really a moot point. It is actually safer just not to pull someone over, but it is hard to find dope and guns that way. I like to wait for back up before getting people out, but if someone is really jumpy I pull em out asap and at a minimun I single cuff em to my push bumper so I know they aren't going anywhere fast, and can't swallow their dope on me.

Being devils advocate, what if your car gets rear ended by a drunk driving, the violator's arm gets ripped off and he committed no offense other than speeding and being overly nervous?

Im suprised that 23% think it's safer (for routine intercept) to get the driver out of the car.

Seeing as the driver can't assault you from within their car if you're outside.

odd.

I think the reason is most suspects we see leave/hide their weapons in or under the car seat. if they are in the car, they are closer to their weapons. Also he can certainly try to run you over, ram you from inside the car or worse reach for a shotgun, assault rifle or other big weapon.

Get him out of the car and at least in the summer time it is easier to see if he is hiding a weapon under his T shirt. It all depends on the situation.

Completely agreed. It's too difficult to answer the question without more details. I think it depends on a lot of factors, the subject, the vehicle, the area, the offense, etc.... A lot of variables that could make it go either way.

On a side note, are you serious? Single cuff them to your push bumper? Not so sure about that... I guess everyone or every department is a little bit different. The first thing that came to mind was what someone posted above about someone crashing into your car from behind, in particular and not so far fetched a drunk driver... But there's several reasons I can think of that I wouldn't want to necessarily handcuff someone to the push bumper of my car.....

LOL... Now, I know you were not intending to be funny here but that one made me crack-up - thanks. This reminded me of a story about a Constable that used to work in this county a long, long time ago... He tied a fugitive to the hood of his car and drove him to the prison in that fashion
