I have tried to ask these questions to the LAPD recuriter and havent really made any headway. I realize they are probably swamped so I figured I would throw it out there. I am a Junior at the Univeristy of Maryland majoring in government and politics with a minor in Studies of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) which is a DHS center of excellence. I am prior Marine Corps Infantry, got out as a Sgt. I graduate May of 2009 and my fiancee is wanting to go to grad school at USC. I did the online qualification test for the expediated process and it said I was good to go. So my questions are:
1) When should I fly out to start my process if I dont want a lull in my monitary intake?
2)Where is a good place to start looking at for housing? Somewhere that will be close to USC but on the same hand be larger than a walk in closet.
3)How do I prepare? (They have a mentor program, but I am all the way on the opposite coast)
I also hold a clearence, which I have heard some rumors that it might hamper the process rather than help.
Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Go to the below website. Go to the recruit forum and read.
http://policebackground.net/
1. The process generally takes 6-12 months, call personnel and get scheduled.
2. Somewhere close to ART. Maybe Culver City or Hawthorne. I went to USC.
3. Run, do a ride along with a local PD, volunteer.
Clearances are not looked at unless you had a violation.

USC is in the ghetto by the way, most of the students there are oblivious to that fact, which is why they all get robbed, cars broken into and bikes stolen. Move to west la or southbay.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that most students are oblivious. More often then not I've seen students who are complete strangers introduce themselves and walk together at night to and from campus because there is strength in numbers.
As for your other glowing generalities about USC students I can only speak on personal experience: I was never robbed, my car was never broken into, but I did get my bike stolen. It's more a right of passage than anything else.
After moving to West LA: my roommate was robbed at gunpoint less than a 100ft from where we live and my car was broken into.
But I digress, something I forgot to mention is that with housing near USC, you will have loud neighbors, which won't work well for your sleep schedule as a recruit in the academy. I'd recommend looking for a place in Koreatown.

1.) I would start as soon as possible. The City is in a financial crisis and from what I've heard, is going to start a hiring slow down.
2.) As was said earlier, I wouldn't live anywhere near USC. Unless you stay directly in the campus area, you and your fiancee are taking your chances. USC IS in the Hood, near Blood and Crip Hood. I would say many students are naive, especially those who move there from out of state and don't realize what type of neighborhood they're moving to. A lot of gang related crime goes on in that general area. I would live elsewhere and make the drive. And not Koreatown, there is just as much crime there as around USC. If you want piece of mind, live out of the City.
3.) If you'd like some pointers on how to prepare, feel free to PM me and we can have a better discussion there. We have plenty of Marines on the job out here so you should be fine. Good luck!

Even former USC students are oblivious!! LAPD4me, Once you get out on the streets and actually do some police work your view may change. USC DPS and the school leaders do a whole lot of work to try and put blinders on students eyes over what really goes on over there.

Chalk up a salty point for me then :o. I've only heard rumors about Southworst, err, southwest but I guess it's worse then I thought. Regardless, I can't wait to hit the streets, learn from the FTOs, and do some police work.

Good attitude to have bro, let you mind be a sponge! Most important thing on probation to remember is "God gave you two ears, two eyes and one mouth, so shut the f**k upuntil i tell you to talk!" The very first full sentence my first TO screamed at me :)

Get started now, process takes awhile 6-8 months, we are hiring and hiring a lot. The budget does not affect us or fire, other city employees are getting the boot. As for living, are you and your wife white? Don't live in south LA dude, believe me I work this area, gang land brother, plus it's a dump, you don't want to live here, I promise.

and you forgot the crack head bike and aluminum can patrols 24/7 near 'SC. funny you mention K-town.It was an armpit when I went thru the academy in '90(lived there for 4 yrs) watched two LGKKs shoot each other down on 6th and Western( near frank and hanks bar), saw a "he-she" stab another one on 3rd and normandie,Got stopped at gunpoint by the community security force during the riots ( I was a "good blk guy" cause I was a cop,and they let me go-felt sorry for any other "bro" they stopped that night)and watched about a guizzillion DUI T/Cs from the "locals" ( seems the Korean folks would get tanked up thurs to sun at the local karoake bars) plenty of good old fashioned walk up and rob crime in K- town too- its hit or miss in the apt hunt in that area(some are well maintained and some are roach cribs),but alot cheaper and easier to drive thru in rush hour from the academy(1880 north-EP,or ARTC in westchester) as well as for a potential girlfriend going to USC+ alot of newer and trendy shops, stores and eateries.......:D

Forgot to add #2 most important thing on probation.
Even if your TO told you to do something an exact way 1billion times and you do it the exact way he said, if he says you messed it up, never ever say "but that's how you told me to do it" instant death by public stoning or a gatorade poured on your boots, same difference.

Roger that. I just remind myself that I don't know jack and that whatever an officer tells me right now is right. I adjusted my attitude real quick after several of my classmates decided to show some attitude during PT... and we paid for it. As for gatorade poured on the boots, well I just can't imagine that. The privilege of wearing boots has yet to be bestowed upon us :D.

We usually just stuff them in the trunk of the radio car for awhile.....

"man those are nice looking boots how long did it take you to... woops, damn that sucks, guess you gotta shine them again..."
That was fun, as was the "go wait in the car, i'll be out in a minute." two hours later as I walk into the station, "what do you think you're doing!? I said wait in the car!"
Probation was fun!
