Good evening to all! For those that know they will be attending the 176th academy class with our department, RSO, congrats to the participants in my junior class! For those that have yet to hear from their b/i good Luck. Also if it is killing you to know, call you freakin b/i and ask, " how am I looken for the 176th academy sir, ma'am"? All they can say is no, right? Just remember this, for every one recruit that is hired with us it took 100 applicants. Which most do not pass their b/i and thats ok, not everyone can do this job.
My class the 175th which we are in our 10th week now, started with 117 recruits and we now are down too 86 recruits!! that is a lot too loose, but it is what it is. For those that have any academy specific questions let me know, I dont mind helping. As it looks on paper the academy class of 176 will start on the 20th of May, hey thats next month, but who knows it could start sooner???

Once again good luck too all. Oh ya hey whats up Jim and appreciate the flash drive.

That's great to hear. Show him how motivated you are about the job. Be upfront with him when ask about something in your PHQ,which he'll go over it with you. Don't be nervous. Good Luck!

They will probably hand you a red pen and ask you if there is anything you didn't put in your personal history statement. THIS IS NOT A TRAP! Tell them everything... even the stuff you didn't think was an issue, because your poly is gonna suck @$$ if you are thinking about the stuff you didn't say. If you are worried about anything, tell them. Let them decide whether or not it matters.

Thats nothing, we (LASD) had 3 days of orientation before our Academy started. Just think of it as extra days to get paid!

davjon14
05-03-2008, 01:51 PM
actually you wont get paid for the "meeting" day, so sorry! As for the 175th academy class we as well had the same meeting week before we started. you are going to spend 1-2 hours over at the rsa(riverside association) you will get tips and vague info on what to expect. As for a previous post, we lost most of our recruits within the first 4 weeks and most, not all were do to stress and physical. they just did not think it would be tuff. And physically, ya you can run and push-up and etc., but add a bunch of other things in with that it makes it a little tuffer, so injuries we have lost 1-2 recruits. We have not lost anyone to academics, shooting, scenarios yet, but stand-by we are not done yet. We are going into our 14th week. cant wait to see our junior class!! just be prepared mentally, and "the little things, and the big things will work themselves out"!

If you're cleared for the PAT on June 6 you may be able to attend the PAT they have tomorrow in the desert. I took and passed the written last month and on the letter it states they will have the test there tomorrow or 6 June at Ben Clark. No need to register, just bring your photo ID. It is located at College of the Desert 43500 Monterey Ave Palm Desert. Start time is 0800. Like I said, not sure how this impacts your situation but thought I could pass along an FYI.

As for rso all the stations are good stations. they all have their unique issues. The only station that most dont want to be sent to is blythe, but if its for you than.... for most of all the recruits that graduate will be sent to the jails first or court services.
I was dq'd medically from laso as well, but had no problems with rso. they all have their own standards, so dont give up. I selected jurupa valley station and that is the only station that I put down. however, that doesnt mean thats were I will go. we have several contract cities that you can select as well as the county stations. Moreno valley is one and it is extremely busy!
as for class 176, make sure that you are hydrated!!! It will be hot and they wont hold back on any of the events, so heed this warning.

Best of luck to class 176. Come together quickly. Just found out today my BI transferred months ago and no one picked up my file. My file is active in the system, yet a recruiter tried to claim I was dq'ed, with no reason supplied. I was told, "You should have received a letter." Hope no one else "slips through the cracks," as this was my explanation for my unfinished processing. It's amazing that there is no accountability for any mistakes in processing people. Of course there are lots of applicants, but there is no excuse to leave anyone's file unfinished. Anyone else go through this?

Oh and good job on getting past the first day. Remember, all they can do is yell, PT, and give out papers. Thats it. When they ask if people are ready to be class sergeant and want people to raise their hands, do it. (That goes for every other time they ask if people are ready). They will always pick the shy, unconfident ones.

Black Friday lived up to it's expectation. They destroyed us in PT 0600-0800, then showered for inspection, got to the grinder, we had the film crew out, then here they come, about 20 of them marching towards the grinder. Then, they just went to town on us. HARD!!! I was running in place reciting the code of ethics. and on & on & on. Have to write 3 memo's on my uniform, which I checked no strings, Had a hair cut and shaved and still have to write a memo on grooming and making sure my partner's uni and clean shaven.

Usually they hire you and you work in the business office at one of the jails. Mostly filing / checking / inputing paperwork into the computer system. There will be no inmate contact, but it will give you a small insight into the department.

RSO can carry a variety of the 'standard' firearms from manufacturers like S&W, Sig Sauer, H&K, Glock, etc. Do a search, this question has been brought up several times, and someone has posted a link for the actual list.

And while I'm at it here's my 2 cents. Go with the Sig 226. But yes, I'm biased. :D

Thanks, i actually saw the list..... I guess no 1911's for that department. I love 1911's and I'm use to that gun... oh well, hopefully one day they will add it to the list.

I think all the guns on RSO's list are DA, so it's unlikely they'll ever consider adding a 1911 to the list. It would be nice to have something from Springfield though (or anything with a backstrap safety for that matter).

I've heard some rumors that some of the head firearms guys were pushing an eight hour familiarization class for the 1911 so that deputies could carry it. This is unconfirmed and nothing more than a rumor, however. For now, the only deputies who carry them are on SEB (S&W). If this passes, you could bet on a Springfield TRP in my holster.

If you are going to carry a 1911 the TRP would need a good work over by a smith. If you are going to spend $1300 fork out the extra 1K and buy the Pro. You will not find a nicer 1911.

I am graduating from the academy in July and was told by a tact staff member last week that by the end of the year the department will be having 4 full-time academy's going on at the same time. we are hiring a lot, however, anything can change with the economy and the first thing that can stop is the hiring, so if you thinkin about rso start now and besides think about the senority you can get under your belt with all the new deputies! My class should know within the next week or two where we will be stationed.

"The Press-Enterprise

Riverside County supervisors Tuesday hired a Woodland Hills law firm to manage issues that could arise from construction of a 1,800-bed jail. The location has not been determined.

The one-year $100,000 contract with the firm Heyman Densmore LLP would buy the county specialized legal counsel for complex construction transactions and dispute resolution, facilities management director Rob Field said in a letter to the board.

The new jail, scheduled to open in 2012, is expected to top $235 million in construction costs and relieve some of the overcrowding that plagues the county's jails.

County Sheriff Stanley Sniff told supervisors earlier this week he expects to hire 1,500 new deputies to work in the new jail."

what are 90 to 6 inches? (earlier post)
what's the 'grinder'?
one more, in the physical assessment, if you are timed for 1 minute for let's say pushups. if you rest do you have to stay in the pushup position or can you sit up and 'shake' your arms out? (1st assesment is next week)

first off Thank you to all for the insight into RCSD academy life, i'm in the process hoping for a 177 academy. A couple of questions
I'll try....

what are 90 to 6 inches? (earlier post)
A very fun little exercise the Tac Staff has you do when they get tired of watching you do pushups. Lay on your back, feet 6 inches off the deck. On the command "90", lift both legs until they are at a 90 degree angle. Don't let your boots touch the ground. Repeat untill the Tac Staff gets tired of yelling at you......

what's the 'grinder'? Where all the fun happens. A concrete slab you will become intimately familiar with over the course of the academy.

You can rest, but it must be in the "up" position. If yor knees touch the ground, you're done.

If I do make it to the academy I'm gonna have alot of people to thank on here....so many people that I've message with alot of questions, and every single one I've gotten answered. They will fall far short from the number of hired officers they need, unless they lower standards and even then it will be a push. It's hard for small departments to fill vacancies of 4 or 5 officers these days. These days in age, people just don't want to be cops for whatever reason.

Law Enforcement standards have dropped tremendously from past years because of the new generation who likes to experience things before considering their career first. I'm only saying this because I am apart of this new generation club. I heard of guys being hired on who have experimented with cocain (unexceptable in my book, I dont care if it was 10 years ago).

Yes and no. Larger agencies can not be as selective as smaller agencies can when it comes to hiring. If a candidate meets the minimum standards in the hiring process they can be hired by any agency. With that being said, large agencies who need people badly will in all likelihood hire these people. Smaller agencies who only hire 5 or 6 people at a time can sort through thousands of people and narrow it down to the best in their minds. Generally, your upscale living areas will see departments with "high standards" (Beverly Hills PD, Glendale PD, Burbank PD, Simi Valley PD, Laguna Beach PD, etc.)

However, it should be said that a candidate who doesn't appear top quality on paper can turn out to be outstanding LEO's. And, also, those who appear great turn out to be not so good.

Does anyone know if RSO has a list of off-duty firearms that are authorize? or can they carry any weapon they like off-duty?

Almost any 9mm, .40S&W, or .45 ACP made by Smith and Wesson, Beretta, Glock, Sig Sauer or HK. There are a few .380 ACP's on the off duty list like the walther, Sig and Beretta. Also any revolver, in .357 mag or .38 special, 5-7 shot, 2-6" barrell, Blue ore stainless finish, made by Colt or Smith and Wesson. If it's not on the list, then you can't carry it per policy. You are also required to qualify with it every quarter.

sounds good, i like the glock 27 as a off-duty gun and a glock 17 as a duty gun.... Not sure if they have enterchangable mags tho... Oh well I still like those two weapons.

Thanks for the info SoCal

The 17 is a full size 9mm the 27 is a subcompact .40. If you want your backup to be able to use the same mags you either need a Glock 22 and 27 combination for .40 or a Glock 17 and 26 for 9mm.

I personally have the 22 for my duty gun and 27 as backup and off duty. Its all personal preference.

I might go with the 22 then. I have small hands and I think the 17 is a lot smaller then the 22 that was my reasoning for going with the 17. But i'm not sure.

The Glock 17 and the Glock 22 have the exact same size frame, pretty much the exact same gun that golds a different caliber. You not know the difference when holding it, and only a slight difference when firing because of the difference in caliber. Same with the 27 and 26. The frame only differs when you go up to a 45 acp. The frame gets larger for both the full size glock 21, and the subcompact glock 30 and 36.

I have a Glock 19 (compact) fits my hand perfect, but I think its to small for a duty weapon. What would be the next size up to the Glock 19?

A glock 17 would be the next size up. A couple of people on my department use the glock 23 which has the same frame as the glock 19 as their duty weapon because it can easily be used as an off duty weapon. So instead of buying two guns they just buy one for both purposes.

I'm definitely not made of money, thats why I will sale my Glock 19 before making the purchase. I want a larger size caliber round (40 or 45) and that is why I will go with the Glock 22. I have a buddy who will buy my Glock 19 for $350, so I will only be paying an extra $80 or $90 bucks for a new Glock at ProForce.

Does anyone think its a bad decision to move in an area where you patrol? I was always told by other Officers/Deputies not live where you work, but I found out that many Officers/Deputies live in the same city they work in and they don't have any problems.

With gas prices raising, it seems like a smart move. What do you guys think? I'm more consern about the Riverside County Area, but any input is good info. Thanks.

It was two parts first was 70 questions in 10 minutes and it was what word was similar or opposite to the other word and second part was un-timed and 225 questions about yourself and what others would say about you. When i talked to the Hr people they said they eventually will do this test instead of the POST test that gives you a T score.

That doesn't make sense. I thought the purpose of the T-score was to show to a statistical certainty how well one would do in the academics portion of the academy. How could personality questions show that?

rso is not looking for aggressive recruits per say, for in order to pass the written psych you have to show a balance, not passive, but not agressive tendencies. So to answer your question, you need to be honest with all your answers and know that they expect you to be human. I did not do this the first time around, meaning I answered the questions in a manner in which I perceived they would want me to answer them and low and behold my test was not valid. The person that administers the test told me this and directed me to take it again, but this time dont read into the questions and my answers did change and I was advised that things were good. The psychologist will review this along with your PHS and put the picture together. I was in and out within 30 minutes, no problem. Just be honest and be prepared to have answers for all screw ups.

Thanks all for the advice. What station has the quickest time to the road? I know it's officially being said 1 to 2 years before going out but what is realistic at the fastest stations? Also if you go from the jail after 1 year to patrol do you have another probationary period as patrol officer for a total of 2 years probation?

SoCalSheriff

18 months of probation. Regardless of where you are assigned. If you do 2 years in the jails, you start patrol off probation. You still have to pass FTO training, however.

Courts is not a bad place to work. I worked at Court Services Central in Murrieta for almost 2 and half years. You can learn a lot about how your reports should be and what needs to be in them by watching the attorneys tear apart other officers on the stand on their reports. Its a good place to get some training in too if you have a cool Sgt. I was able to get in quite a few classes while I was at courts to help me get ready for patrol.

Its all in what you make it. Courts can be a place where you can slack off and not do anything extra but if you put forward the effort you can really make good use of your time there and work on things like ped contacts and reports and stuff before you hit the streets.

There isn't much OT at courts at all. The jail still has OT but if you are going to courts you can't go to the jail and do OT unless you take the two week jail course (I think its about two weeks). There is still OT available but most of it is in patrol and until you complete FTO you can't do it.

GL at courts, make the best of your time there. Don't be one of the new guys that just tries to get by by doing the minimum.
