I am thinking of moving the wife and kids to the USA and getting a job as a Police Officer. I am a seving officer in the south of UK in a large City, I am well experianced and am an ex-soldier who has seved for ten years.
I want a change of climate so fancy the USA.
Does anyone have any advice for me on the best place for an ex UK officer to serve and if any Force accepts UK officers before immigration to the USA.

The rules will vary from state to state.

In order to be appointed as a peace officer in California, you must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Citizenship status must be conferred within three years of applying for citizenship. Additional citizenship requirements are stipulated for California Highway patrol officers, who must be U.S. citizens at the time of appointment.

Alabama has U.S. Citizenship requirements much like those of California. What I have suggested to our UK colleagues desiring to move, is to check out Canada. You'd have to address your concerns to a specific Canadian law enforcment agency to see what their requirments might be. The bottom line here is that it will probably be somewhat easier to transition to a Canadian police agency, as opposed to a U.S. agency. Best of luck to you in your efforts.

Difficult proposition mate. I moved over from Wilts 20 years ago, but needed to become a US citizen before applying to be a copper... Your first hurdle is immigration; you'll need a permanent resident visa and unless you win one of the green card lotteries, you'll have to come in under one of the E class 'exceptional skills/abilities' visas. Very difficult, unfortunately, and right now a large percentage of visas seem to be going to non EU/UK citizens.

How about someplace in the EU, if you want a change? Permanent emigration to the US is tough, unless you happen to feel like walking in from the south, and we'll roll out the red carpet once you get here, amigo :(

One of the Caribean islands hires UK citizens (don't remember which one, but the island has a strong Brit history and may still be a protectorate).
