I have a quick question. i am currently in the hiring process for lapd. i just recieved my certification letter today.
.... how long do you have to wear a suit once your in the academy, before they issue you uniforms?

They issue the "smurfs" before you even start the academy. Then, unless its changed, you are in your suits for a month more or less. Then the last month of the academy, you get to wear your class A uniforms.

berlioz is right, you buy your smurfs before you start the academy and you wear suits for a month. Then, when the new class comes in you'll start to wear the smurfs. Although right now we've been wearing a hybrid combination of pt shirt, pt sweatshirt, smurf pants, running shoes... mainly because we're doing ped stops. Also, don't bother buying dress shoes because you'll be wearing the bates shoes you buy at orientation and don't forget to shine them with Kiwi every day. Oh, and make sure you have your smurfs military pressed when you start to wear them, learn how to use collar stays, and have fun with the shirt stays!

That's the funniest thing I have heard in a while. Cheap *** city of LA actually providing equipment for it's officers. Right before graduation you get issued 2 class a uniforms and that is the only uniform you are issued. Uniform checks yearly in the summer.

Isn't it LAPD advertising on the radio of a $10K bonus upon graduating the academy? With them being so cheap, does this mean you end up breaking even???

Well to be fair, us non-laterals will only get $5k, not $10k. Half if you graduate, and the other half if you survive probation (which, rumor has it, more rookies aren't passing... I'm just speculating... but maybe going from 7 months to 6 months in the academy wasn't such a good idea...)
Thanks to the compressed schedule, things get cut out like having enough PT, spending time learning/memorizing the laws, and only getting 2 hours of gang awareness (used to be 8)... but hey, it isn't like we'll run into any gang members in LA or anything. Maybe that's what the "bonus" is for.. "Sorry for letting you graduate without the best training you should have... um, here you go, hope you get some good fto's, cross your fingers, and good luck."

You're correct, it's $5,000 for non-laterals and $10,000 for laterals. This is to try to compete with all the other law enforcement agencies around Southern California who are also hiring and pay better.
Also true about the "boots" not making probation but it isn't because they're getting fired (although I'm sure some are), it's more that they are quitting because they didn't realize how much work and time is involved in being a police officer in a busy city. My division alone recently had five quit in a two-month span, all saying the same thing during their exit interviews.
Don't feel too bad, when I went through the academy back in 1988, we didn't have any signing bonus so at least you got $5,000, which is still nice! We also started at around $34,000 a year, unlike what you start at today. I'm sure DOA and Sgt Reality can attest to this.
We also had a six-month academy and still learned a lot. The City was a heck of a lot more busy back in those days (1100+ homicides a year) than it is today and we only had 7600 officers then compared to the 9600 we have now.
My point is that it's what you make it. You can still learn a lot if you put your mind to it. If you are working CREW (like your classmate involved in the major TC), you should be going to the senior officers in the different divisions and try to learn from them, they're a wealth of information. If you're not working CREW, then the same applies to the division you do work at.
I hope your classmate is doing better and is out of the hospital soon.

I think I would rather make 34,000 in 1988 than 54,000 in 2008.

Thanks for the thoughts of my classmate, he's doing better.
I think that everyone realizes that you have to look toward senior officers for knowledge whether you have 1,3,10yrs on the job. Even with a 7 month academy, the bulk of what you learn on probation is in the field anyway, at least it was for me.
The biggest learning experience is being new a P2 out with a P2 with less time than you and both of you have the "what now" look.
