Hi,

I'm kind of newbie altough I've registerd while back.
When I saw an application for California Highway Patrol several years back, I notice part of it stating that any history of back pain would result in automatic disqualifications. Well I had Disc problem in the past and have recovered most of it. However I do have back pain here and there once in awhile when lifting very heavy object for long period of time.

Could you guys tell me if being an officer...Police, Sheriff, CHP would be difficult for person in my shoes? Is CHP bit more strict with these kind of issue compared to other agencies?

thank you very much!

I had disc surgery 3 years ago. I was told by 2 specialists that I should have no problem in the academy or on patrol. At all the places I have applied there was no mention of back pain. Maybe it's just CHP. Good luck songman.

The agency will give you a full medical screening where you'll disclose any prior medical conditions that could adversely affect your performance. I'm surprised to hear that "back pain" is an auto disqualifier for CHP; typically, I'd expect to see a possible DQ for a back injury or persistent back problems - not just "pain" in and of itself. Perhaps you should double check with the CHP hiring and recruitment unit?
