I was recently DQ'd from a couple departments and want to put some time between my transgressions before a re-apply. I am going to go back to school and finish my B.A. in Business Admin and should graduate in May of 09. I will be living on student loans and was thinking that becoming a reservist may increase my desireability as a recruit.

I would like to hear about your experience as a reservist and your opinions of my plan.

Thank you!

^+1...Military or PD?

For PD...if you were DQ'd for a full-time position, you'll be DQ'd for a Reserve Officer.

well first what were you DQed for? will time help? obviously if you were convicted for DV, you better look for a new career.

i'm guessing the poster means military reservist. if he/she meant police reservist then he wouldn't be a recruit, but instead a lateral if he went full time.

Sorry yes I meant military.

I was DQ'd for a theft from an employer about a year ago. I sold some toner from my home office which belonged to my company on ebay. Dumb decision and I have since replaced it.

I figure I need a minimum of 2 years between me and the theft and I want to make the best of it. On top of keeping my nose clean I want to do as much as possible to make myself the best candidate I can.

Any input from current or past military reservists would be appreciated.

I think a little more than two years would be necessary. I am a reservist with the United States Coast Guard and I love it here. I am in the same shoes as you are. I applied, got DQ'd for frequent drug usage (even though there had been several years between my indiscretions), so all I can say is that I need time. I also had an undetected theft in my history, and when I asked people about it, they said it would definetely be more than a few years. So all I can say to you is what they said to me. I do the right things now, I play everything safe, I joined the military to show stability, and all I can do is do what I do right then apply again to show how much character and integrity I've built. I would suggest you do the same, integrity is key, and theft doesn't make it look better, but we all make mistakes, it's what you do in the future now to make yourself a better candidate for a future career that awaits you!

Ask80 is right though, Domestic Violence and you're done. You don't exactly have to do military. I just don't feel like going back to school right away. I'll finish my BS eventually. You can just finish your BA, hold a steady job for several years, stay out of trouble.

You are probably right. I am considering joining the Air Force or Army after I graduate as an officer then apply for LEO once I am done with the military. I may actually enjoy the military enough to make a career our of it anyways. All personality tests I have taken in college have all directed me towards military or LE and these are careers I've been interested in my entire life.

No DV in my history, zero drugs (haven't even tried pot once). Just one bad decision and it is postponing my career of choice. This is my punishment and I will make the best of the time I have to wait.

Thank you very much for your advice and if anyone else has something to add I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.
