Enjoy a growing city, low crime, reasonable cost of living, warm weather and great pay and benefits. Several officers have made the move from Massachusetts and the New England area to the Austin Police Department.
Hiring can be completed in 2 trips to Austin, Texas. You must apply and test before October 2008 in order to be considered for the March 2nd 2009 cadet class.
We are civil service and one of the strongest unions in Texas. With pay/benefits and cost of living we have been rated one of the best police departments in the country.
The Austin Police Recruiting Sergeant is from Boston and is very aware of the long wait and difficulty applicants have in securing a police officer position in Massachusetts.
The Austin Police Department will be hiring approximately 100 or more cadets for a class starting in March 2009.
Visit the web site at apdrecruiting.org for more details on the Austin Police Department.
The Job Fair will be held Thursday, June 05, 2008 - 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Gillette Stadium
One Patriot Stadium

Interested applicants may send a contact card to the Austin Police Recuiting Unit so that a recruiter can speak with you about the process and potential testing at the job fair to save you one trip to Austin, Texas.

You can blame Civil Circus for he long wait applicants have to endure. I waited 10 years and eventually moved to FL and got hired. Should have done it years ago!

Good for you! I'm strongly considering doing that myself right now. Let me know if you got any pointers!! Seems like the whole state of FL has a hiring freeze right now so I'm researching self-sponsorship down there.
There's alot to blame along with Civil Circus - sh1tty municipal budgets are another big factor.

If you can take a leave of absence and get certified in Fl which will cost you about $1000.00 you can pretty much get on any department you want. That's if you pass the Ploy and the psych test.

I was told that I would have to work down here for two years, full time, to be able to win any brownie points with civil service.
Florida is on a freeze. I got in at the right time. Jobs are very tight right now unless you are in southern FL. Amendment-1 is killing us. Thanks for nothing, Gov. Crist!

I called the Florida Keys community college and they told me it would cost $10,000.00 or more!!
Ten-Grand because I'm not a resident. They said you need proof of residency for a year to get a discount and they check tax returns as proof.
Man, that's insane! $10K WTF?
Is it like that all across the state?

The Austin Police Recruiting Trip is less than one month away. If you want to test with us at the job fair contact Sgt. Fortune at arthur.fortune@ci.austin.tx.us
Testing will be for a limited number of applicants who have reserved a spot.
I see several posts on here about how much Florida requires to certify officers and that is without even having a job lined up. APD does not charge to attend the academy as we have our own academy. Most agencies in Texas will have their own academy or regional academies. You may also certify yourself as a police officer and then get hired by a smaller agency but usually the pay and benefits will be lacking.
Good luck in your job searches.

I paid nothing, Miami Gardens paid it all for us. I think the 10,000 is for the entire academy. If you are certified in another state I believe the cost is approx. $800.00.
