What is your ritual on your way to work.

I usually do a morning prayer then listen to Rage Against the Machine on the way to work and usually listen to love songs on the way home to unwind before I see my fiance and son. Yes I don't mind showing my soft side.

I usually don't do much. I may lay down with my wife for an hour or two (I work 3rd shift) before I leave. I usually arrive a little early and shoot the S**t with a couple of officers for a few minutes before we go in, then we shoot the s**t some more about the shift after work before going home. Talking about our day before we go home usually helps me unwind.

When I worked the 0600-1400 shift I would jam out in my car to Metallica on the way to work. Now that I work the 2200-0600/1400-2200 I'm already awake and ready to tackle anything so I just drive to work.

As for winding down I usually talk to my girlfriend about everything minus work since I don't believe in taking work home with me. Whatever happens in the jail/court stays there, unless it's something funny or exciting I may let her in on it. I also love to punch my heavy bag if it's been a hectic or frustrating day.

I never leave home with telling my family I love them cause you never know when your not going to come home.

We work alot of 16hr shifts so there are weeks when I don't see my family so time is precious with them.

Eh, no real rituals.

My daily routine consists of spending time with the horses from 4pm-6pm, playing World of Warcraft from 6pm-8pm, getting dressed from 8pm to 9pm, then driving 45min to work. 3 days a week, I carpool with my next door neighbor who is also my Sgt, so we spend the time chit-chatting about work (and about horses, since she has them too.) The other 2 nights a week, I just listen to my MP3 player. I set it shuffle and listen to whichever of my 2000 songs pops up.

On the way home, pretty much the same. Come home, let the dogs potty while I let the horses out of the barn, watch about 30min of TV (usually Family Guy recorded the night before) and drift off to sleep.

I usually get ready an hour before I go to work. I like to take my time, make my lunch. Then I sit down and relax for 10-15 min. Then on my way to work I will either call some friends (30 miles to work) or I will listen to Nascar Radio 128. On the way home I usually call my girlfriend or another friend, depands on what time it is.

I work 0545 - 1800. I usually get up around 0345, do the S,S and S. Fix my lunch for the day or stop and pick up some on the way. I get to work at least 15 min prior to line up so I can get the coffee started. I work with a mean bunch until they've got a pot or two of coffee in them.

I usually listen to on eof the local radio stations on the way to work. Recently on the way home I listen to Pantera. Believe it or not, that helps me unwind. Other than that, I normally don't do anything ritual-like.

For me working second shift I wake up at about 0630 and do a little something; Like a quick trip around the block or thirty minutes on the stationary bike. Then I shower and go back to sleep until about 1130 unless I have something to get done. Then it's a shave and shower at 1200, a quick bite to eat and rocking out all the way to work with anything that happens to sound good loud that day. Coast through the shift, and come home loud again. :o

4. get up do things around the house until 1900

6. Sit around with the wife and four legged kids (two legged are married and gone now)
7. 2030 go to work with the LONG 5 1/2 mile drive to work
8. 2100 to 0500 SALT MINE TIME

I always read the sign posted by the first vestibule “Enter this facility at your our risk. The actions of you or your captors will not result in the release of you or any inmate from the custody of the Sheriff.”

The second vestibule I always “tap in”, by physically tapping the back of my hand on the door frame.

The three times I forgot to “tap in”,
1. Inmate stopped breathing while working in my area,
2. I was in a bad fight with an inmate, but walked out, and
3. I broke my ankle in two places and tore my ACL in my left knee.

Not too bad for five years.

I was working in a spot close to the coffee maker, and asked to make coffee for a coworker. After turning away (yes just turning) I slipped, down for the count. My kids think the inmates did it. LOL

Get to work about an hour early. GO up to the locker room. Get out my boots. SLap a quick polish on and get all the junk put in my pockets (extended cuff key, gum, gloves, ear piece/lapel mic) before i put on my uniform. Once uniform is ready to be put on I go take a final ride on the throne. Suit up and head down to the roll call room to shoot the breeze for a bit before work. After work it's pretty much in reversed but much quicker. A bunch of us usually hang out afterwards and debrief if you will. To and from work I listen to The Avett Brothers. Always.

On my way to work, I'll put on XM 204 and listen to hockey game highlights or I'll listen to music.. Than I'll stop get a cup of coffee, can of Skoal and than head off to work. On the way home, just get in the car..take a deep breath and thank the almighty that I made it through the day again

I usually make sure my uniform and gear are good-2-go, kill a cup of coffee, kiss the wife (even if she is mad at me because you never know if something might happen to you at work), kiss the kid, grab another cup of coffee at the mini-mart on the way, listen to some metal to get me hyped up during my 1 hour drive to the job. After work I call the wife tell her I'm fine, hit the 24hour gym on the way home, listen to some classic rock or some B.B. King to relax, get home, shower, sleep.

A quick S, S, S. Uniform pants on with any old hoodie and some sneakers. Get to work, race to the locker and slap on shirt and boots. Hit the line-up room for a few minutes and then get to work. As soon as shift is over, race to the locker room, and reverse the dress code. And oh yeah....Pink Floyd - Grateful Dead - Neil Diamond - Dave Matthews on the way in and from work. Always!!

Friday - Tuesday I Get up at 0300,hit the 3 S's,kiss the g/f and her daughter and out the door at 0415, stop and get coffee and smokes if needed, drive a hour to wok drinking coffee and smoking and rocking out to Pantera,Korn,..etc. Usually arrive half hour prior to breifing so I kill time and go check daily change cheats and morning reports on computer to see if what happend on 3rd and 1st watch. Go to the bullroom for briefing @ 0610 and then go spend 8 fun filled hours in Seg. Then at 1410 or so unless I sign up for O.T. or get forced,I get in the car and drive home and listen to Sports Talk Radio.

Ritual is so important. Get you in the right frame of mind. I have a very specific way I put my uniform together. I shower and get dressed at the same time. Mainly I want to arrive at work ready to go, no questions. Hate feeling like I am rushed or out of control. Love the control feeling. On the way home, I let the family know I am ok. Then I try to unwind with the dogs for a minute, have a glass of wine and get a foot rub. Now I'm ready to be human again.

My shift starts at 2230. I get ready about 2000, wife and child walk me to the car at 2030 give my kiss and I love you to both. Head on over to my local cigar shop to have a smoke and Cuban coffee and shoot the breeze with a few LEO's and Firefighters. Head out about 2130. Reach the facility at about 2200 and find out where I'm being sent that night. If I'm staying in the facility I go to the OM and hang out till about 2220 then go to my assigned unit or detail. As far as the tunes, it depends what I feel like listening to.

ok so im not the only person who has some odd ritual like tapping in. I always get a drink of water from the water cooler before I go back to the booking area ( I am the searching/booking officer for all males on my shift). I always tap on the holding cell doors in the holding area, and make sure they are completley shut
