There has been some talk at work of people buying some stab vests to wear...the only ones I have ever seen are pretty bulky like body armor...is there any stab vest that is more or less invisible?

The short answer is no there isn't any stab armour approaching invisible. I have been doing research on this as I am a health and safety rep for my union local.

The Correctional Service of Canada is in the process of issuing stab vests to all maximum security officers and all medium security segregation unit officers. Basically the only way to tell the difference between the stab panels and ballistic panels is to read the label. Stab and ballistic armour is made from the same types of fibers, just woven differently.

All California COs wear them everyday. You get used to them. I thought I would really hate wearing it everyday but now I don't really notice it unless it is summer.

Hey JMTX do you remember the big blue vests before the SRT came along? Those were knife vests, they were puncture and slash resistant.

All NYCDOC staff are required to wear stab/slash resistant vests issued by the department. You do get used to them after a while.

It is manditory to wear stab/slash vests in PA. We have two carriers available. One is a standard velcro carrier and one is a t-shirt style. the tshirt style is a little more concealed but anytime you put anything under your shirt its going to be noticable. The vests are a little bulky, a little heavy after 8 hours and takes your core temp up about 10 degrees. Not fun in the summer time.

 we wear them here in CA state prisons (manditory) but the inmates went from stabbing us in the chest, back and stomach (with no vest) to stabbing us in the neck and face (with vest) If something is going happen its going to happen no matter what.

Nope I only got issued a level III vest, though I wouldn't mind having a stab vest also it just won't happen with our budget.

They were stabbing and slashing faces and necks long before we got stab vests. In the heat of the moment when their adrenalin is pumping they are swinging wildly at the body in front of them. When we first got our vests they were junk. Havn't seen the newer issued ones yet. We're even getting issued vests at camp. Here we are telling the public that our I/M's are non violent but yet we have to wear the damn thing. Only in the PEOPLES REPUBLIC of KALIFORNIA

I wore a concealable lvl IIIA / Spike II vest under my uniform for a couple months before being transfered to a Close Custody unit. Now I wear the same vest but in an outer "assault" style carrier. I'm not complaining though, because I traded my 5.11 uniform shirt for a nice t shift.:p

Hi all. By way of introduction, I've been a city reserve officer, Navy shipboard CT team member, State Corrections officer, County Detention Officer, hit the road as a County Deputy, left law enforcement for other pursuits, now heading back into corrections. What's going on with the knife proof vests is kinda like after the the suits and the media started telling and showing everyone kevlar vests. They even showed them on dummies, so everyone could get a good idea of where they provided protection and where they didn't. Shortly after perps started going for head shots.

I've been out in GP for three years, where we only have to wear 'em working with our Medium Custody nitwits. As of this evening, though, I'm going to have to start wearing one every night, though.

I've been sent to our Ad Seg, and I'm supposedly going to be issued one (if our Armoury Officers ever get back from training...until then, I guess I'll be checking one out from Central.)

We just had an attempted spearing in a Seg pod, one of the morons just lanced out when the food slot was popped open at chowtime, and fortunately it hit the vest for a "no harm, no foul" shot. Then the fun (and the gassing) began!! :p

So, in answer, yes, I'll be wearing that religiously.

I must say that the one thing inmates know its where to effectively stick ya. If they wanna get you, they will. We used to wear Second Chance stab proof, but now wear safariland fully ballistic. Heavy, hot, and annoying.

Alright I'll post the kicker now. In our max GP housing we have two officers doing a walk with about 36 inmates out at a time walking around the day room. These officers do not have to wear a vest. But our close custody guys who only manage an average of 70 inmates total, with only one out at a time, and locked down for every security walk; wear vests.

In GP we have 126 I/M per block, 1 Officer assigned per block no vest, no cuffs, no radios the only thing you get is OC spray.

in Medium and Transient blocks same I/M count, but you get vest, cuffs, radio, and OC.

In Transient Seg/Solitary where I work I wear a vest, carry OC, cuffs, radio and have access to Batons and have 2 other Officers with me.

If I could sign a waiver not to wear one, I would. If an inmate wants to get ya, he will get ya, and there ain't **** a vest is going to do for you. Thats one thing they are smart about... whats effective and will work. Street smart they are, but book smart waived bye bye a long time ago.

It's optional at my county jail. If a CO wants one the county will buy it but once they buy it you have to wear it all the time. Only a few CO's wear them. I hate to say it but it's usually the hard core cop wanna be's.

I had an acquaintance stabbed in the back about a centimeter from his heart. He was fortunate to be alive afterwards. Unfortunately he died not even a month into retirement.

Stab Vest every day. It is just like a bulletproof vest, in fact mine is rated as IIA + Stab. Don't take the chance, get and use a vest. I keep seeing more and more edged weapons made by the prisoners. It's hot, you will sweat, and if the day should come, you will survive.

Very true but I guess as long as it's concealed well the common bonehead inmate won't know about it. If an Inmate wants you dead he would be stupid to shank you in the chest, a quick lethal wound to the neck would make the most sense.

Then again were not dealing with brain surgeons :p

If we were authorized concealable body armor I would wear it, but ours are outer "tactical" vests, not only are they heavy as hell they are black, I lost 30 lbs last year alone from sweating under the vest (I got fat during my time with Juvenile Probation) and actually having to work.

I don't know, the neck (yeah, even my chubier one!) Is a smaller, moving target than the upper torso is. Yeah its possible to get a shank in the neck but personally I think ill lower my chances by wearing one. These guys arn't rocket scientists, but they do know killing rather well.
