View Full Version : Is it really officer safety?

The subject refers to the oft asked question regarding officer behavior in relation to tail lights on traffic stops. Say no more.
I do know why, but my question is this, and maybe it's best that it be answered in a PM rather than here. But is it "Officer Safety" or is it really "Operational Integrity"? I'm trying to figure out exactly how safety plays into it and I just can't see it.

I understand the sensitivity to the question, so I guess I can leave it alone.

If bad guys know how we really do things they can adapt their tactics and that puts us in danger. I prefer bad guys to think we are a bunch of morons who do things like on TV. Those assumptions help us most of the time.
Now if I can just get complainants to stop thinking CSI is real.....

The answer to any question that the public has no legitimate need to know, but that the badguy could use against us, is an officer safety issue. It's that simple.

It's also about the violator always being guilty.

we really all just have OCD.... we touch our own tail lights and then both of yours before we can talk to you. If we forget we have to go back and start again or we just cant function:D

They're teaching the "Monk Method" of traffic stops in most progressive Academies these days. Practice long and hard and someday you too can be a police.

I touch the back of cars just because I have a thing about touching metal. It's actually the only reason I became a cop and the only reason I stop cars, so I can touch the back of them.

You mean you guys can't get DNA evidence to the back of your car/Hummer and get a positive match in 2 minutes?
....I thought we were back woods :D

Well, actually I just got the results from a DNA thing the other day.
I had forgotten about it since I sent it off a year and a half ago :D
Oh, came back as a negative match.

I spent about 5 min. thinking about it, and I'm 95% sure I know why, (With any luck, I'll get to find out why in the coming months) or at least I can think of a very good reason to do it. But I have to ask why some cops always want to lick my windows and/or mirrors. Is this Officer safety as well, or does it go back to the whole 'boogers' thing?
Anyway, I think the issue should be dropped. If I it is why I think it is, then calling attention even to the fact that it's done, can compromise the whole purpose. The fewer people who even know about it, the better.

I agree. We should stop chit-chatting about. Furthermore, it shouldn't be DONE AT ALL. If you disagree with me, let's argue about it in a PM and I'll tell you why. ;)

Chuck Norris can. He can identify DNA by taste alone and have the bad guy dead in less than 60 seconds.

In the Academy I kinda got turned on after touching the brake light/trunk and I would start to hump the vehicle. :)

You can't. All who have tried have died.

Chuck Norris merely has to say the word "die" and you will.
Someone tried to give Chuck Norris a surprise birthday party once so he killed them because Chuck Norris can NEVER EVER be surprised.

I'm checking the light to see if another officer has stopped them... the more boogers the more the chance of a ticket ;)

Then, in knowing the truth, you understand why we fear those darn cows. They are out of control and not a day goes by that some rookie forgets to take the proper precautions and ends up dead. We were all trained to touch that tail light for a reason!
