This is a tough one- tough becuase I'd see this officer along with his partners , routinely working the new recruits thru their bldg entry tactics and mobile field force training in the vacant residentials in my patrol area-it also tough becuse he was a fellow L.A. copper and it makes us all feel smaller when one of us goes down like this.Lets hope that Veendtra pulls thru and that we can all come together to console Simmons family in this tragic time.
For those of us out there today and for the rest of the yr,look to your partner and co-workers and do your best to promise to bring them home safe-Simmons and Veenstra did their BEST so that nobody else would have to go in "harms way".............:(

I hate reading this. My heart goes out to the family. My partner and I were talking last night about how we have been canceling our backs alot recently on calls where we usually roll 2 units.
This is not the same situation, but it reminds me that my wife and children rely on me to come home after work to take care of them. I think ill start accepting that back up again so my family doesnt have to get the phone call that this officer's family received this morning.

apathetic 19yr old PUNK did all this misery- he murdered his father,2 brothers, then killed brave Officer Simmons..Meanwhile that dumb "B.tch" Mitchell on KCAL channel 9 did a "hack" job on the history of the LAPD SWAT,making them look like they are gun crazed goons out to hurt people ( she even stupidly reported that the infamous SLA shoot out "happened" on "54th street" in Compton -"54th street" is in So.Los Angeles, and claimed that viewers watched "horrified" as 400 SWAT members let 6 SLA "TERRORISTS" burn to death in the home-LAPD ,NOR LASD have ever had 400 SWAT members, even if you counted all the current anf former members on both teams) I truly hate when you see people trying to spit on a good man or womans memory, and I'm totally sick of the local medias "vulture" mentality toward local tragedies...

A Cop On the Take ...
First he takes ... the oath.
Now look at what else he takes:
He takes ... it in stride when people call him pig.
He takes ... his lousy paycheck realizing he'll never be rich.
He takes ... a second job sometimes to make ends meet and support his family.
He takes ... time to stop and talk to children.
He takes ... your verbal abuse while giving you a ticket you really deserved.
He takes ... on creeps you would be afraid to even look at.
He takes ... time away from his family to keep you safe.
He takes ... your injured child to the hospital.
He takes ... the graveyard shift without complaint because it's his turn.
He takes ... his life into his hands daily.
He takes ... you home when your car breaks down.
He takes ... time to explain why both your headlights have to work.
He takes ... the job no one else wants -- telling you a loved one has died.
He takes ... criminals to jail.
He takes ... in sights that would make you cry.
Sometimes he cries too, but he takes it anyway because someone has to.
He takes ... memories to bed each night that you couldn't bear for even one day.
He takes ... time to explain to his family why he can't make the ball game his child is in and why he has to work on the holiday when other parents are off.
Sometimes ... he takes a bullet.
And yes, occasionally ... he may take a free cup of coffee.
If he is lucky ... he takes retirement.
Then one day he pays for all he has taken ... and God takes him.

One of the MANY reasons why I DESPISE the media......effin vultures.....and thats being unkind to vultures, as they actually SERVE A PURPOSE.
Officer Veenstra's wife (Capt. Veenstra) deserves a medal for not choking out that idiot reporter that followed her home from the hospital.......

If someone follows me, they get proned out by the on-duty folks while I make a U-turn and give a statement to the uniformed officers. Media or not. VERY unsat, even for LA area reporters.
Last I heard, Officer Veenstra will make it. He's missing a part of his jaw, and will require reconstructive surgery. But he'll recover. Thank God!

This is an absolute tragedy...I look at D-Platoon officers as invincible Jedi Knights...Although I'll take a lesson out of this it still hurts to think of the pain this knucklehead caused an entire brotherhood.

I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face
"In the line of duty" I hear them say
My family now the price will pay
My folded flag stained with their tears
We only had those few short years
The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind
I never dreamed it would be me
And with heavy heart and bended knee
I ask for all here from the past
Dear God, let my name be the last

:(
For LAPD SWAT, a team that works a VERY hot area (L.A.), and has for almost 40 years, this being their first casualty speaks volumes for their training, skill, experience, and professionalism.

First post here, sorry to start on such a sad note.
I worked three years in Metropolitan Division, C Platoon. I had the HONOR to receive many of hours of training from both Randy and Jimmy. I also had the honor to work side by side with these officers during multi Platoon Warrant Services and several large demonstrations.
These two Policemen were the best of the best. Everything you have heard about both is all true and more. Metropolitan Division and especially D platoon are taking this very hard, they and we will move forward,as Jimmy and Randy would be the first to tell us to.
Both men will always be role models for the rest of us to attempt to strive to emulate both on and off duty.
Godspeed Randy and we have your back Jimmy, always.
RIP, METRO MAN
