I just got word that the department I am in the process with is on a hiring freeze now:eek:. I am in the B/I stage and all was looking great but now I think it is in the air???? I am thinking about applying to RSD and wanted some input on their written exam.... I see vocab, spelling, multiple choice, reading comp & clarity. I am confident in all of those areas but I also see "Essay," is that a written essay or a fill-in the blanks essay? If it is a written essay, what are the topics that have been seen? Thanks in advance!!!

The topic i had was " Describe a time when you had to overcome an obstacle that would hold you back from you wanted" . It was something like that. You will have the plug in word essay also on the ommitence part.

The written test I was given was on a personal altercation I was involved in and how I handled it. The written test is just to see if you know how to write and will not even be graded unless you are hired. If you fail you can still be hired but must sign a writting contract where you will complete a colledge writing course within 18 months of your hire date.

hey wannabdst, how long was the total time for your hiring process with RSO? I just took the written this past Saturday for RSO and I heard from the recruiting deputy that the department needs 300-400 people this year. I'm also still in the LASO process, but the process for them seems to be slowing down significantly since they met their quota.

Hey guys, i am also in the RSO process as well as LASD process, and yes LASD has really slowed down the hiring. I have been in the process for over 7 months and still need my med/psych scheduled so i am sure it will be another month or two before i hear anything. As far as RSO i just passed the Physical Agility test today @ desert college....wasn't to bad pretty fun actually :). From what i hear RSO is hiring like crazy right now....good time to apply... i also hear that Backgrounds are taking anywhere between 6 weeks-3months tops :)..... **cross fingers for may academy**.

I just applied on Friday morning for Riverside Sheriff and they did say they were hiring about 300 deputies this year!!! I was also watching class 175 do some exercises and please don't take this personal but I saw alot of recruits not making it over the 6 foot wall???? I was under the impression that you must clear it before getting to the academy??? This was around 7:30am 2/8/08 so maybe the recruits had already been through hell & on their way back....... Can anybody from class 175 clarify?
davjon14
02-10-2008, 07:22 PM
Yes allow me to clarify, At 0600 we started out with a nice set of approx. 40 push-ups, right into a set of 30 sit-ups back on the deck for another set of push-ups than a set of rock climbers into a 1.5 run back on the deck for another circuit of push-ups, sit-ups rock climbers, than another run 1/2 mile which at this point was about 45 minutes into the program, than we immediately jumped the wall. It may have looked easy, but beleive me when I tell you it was anything but. And it was Nothing like the original assessment anyone of us or you had or will face. This was just the early am session. Than it went to the Inspection with the 20+ drill instructors from different agencies to include RSO. If we were not on the ground pushing it, we were getting an ear for an hour and 10 minutes standing at attention. Lots of fun, let me tell you. Hopefully you will be successful to have the opportunity to experience this as we all did. FYI, out of 3000 applicants you saw the recruits that actually got picked up trying their hearts out.

For the record I had seen at least two people that did NOT make it over the wall, in the BI "seminar" after the agility test on 2/01/08 for RSD.

now if you dont make it over the wall during the assessment than you will not be considered. So everyone in my academy which has lost another recruit today to bring our class number down to 89 had to have jumped that wall.

It sounds like you got the good ole first friday PT and inspection. It was a fond memory and then a good time over all. BTW Investigator Elwell can KMA..... and off to Blythe I went before I went left and came back to washington.
davjon14
02-22-2008, 11:59 PM
Sgt. Elwell is no longer with the tac staff. He left after our second week which has been two weeks ago. He was tuff though! We now Sgt. Kondrit, he is pretty cool, even though he is not suppose to be or for right now anyways. I am hopefully heading to Jarupa Valley station. We are in our 4 th week.

Ohh he made Sgt. He and I did not see eye to eye on alot of things but good for him.. Jarupa Valley is a good station but I will say to anyone that wants to listen Blythe is the way to patrol, investigator and other specialities very fast. There is also a good team aspect and I love being on the river it was fun.
Good Luck and I hope that you have a great time it is worth it. If you can make it past week 4 then your going to be just fine.

The best thing about Blythe, or the Colorado River Station as it's now called, is that their station designator is A- Adam. So when you work the yard you can be 1-Adam-12...

I have better chances going to patrol if I select Blythe? What are typical calls out their in Blythe? If I want to trasfer how long does it take, from a guestamate? I am not opposed to going their.
docjay
02-24-2008, 03:01 AM
Not saying you have a better chance, when I left the standard was about 10 to 24 months. That is quick compared to 48 to 60 at southwest station.
Blythe is the desert and it is desolate. I would take a drive out there and see what it is like, try to schedule a ride along and interivew the deputies at the station.
Good Luck to you

docjay - how long ago was this? In the last 3-4 years the county has expanded in population at one of the highest rates in the country. I also hear from several people that RSO is stretched so thin, the majority of the next few classes are hitting the streets right off the bat. Last year the jail-time standard seemed to be around 12-18 months.
SoCalSheriff
02-24-2008, 06:23 PM
Not anymore. You will be in the jail AT LEAST 24 MONTHS, and as long as 36.
Trust me. I have been in the jail for 21 months now. Had a meeting w/ Sheriff's Admin in January to confirm. The new policy is that those who go to the jails will do 24-36 months before transferring out.
WannaBeSheriff
02-24-2008, 06:56 PM
I've always wondered how does that work? Is all the training you did at the academy still fresh after 2-3yrs working jails?

To clarify,
the new policy at RSO seems to be to alternate classes. One Academy class will send a majority of new deputies straight out to the streets, and a few will go to the jails and courts. (For example class 173 sent the majority of their new deputies to patrol). The next class will send the majority to the jails and courts, with a few going to the steets. Regardless of which "cycle" you fall into, if you go to the jails, plan on spending 24-36 months there.
ask80
02-25-2008, 12:03 PM
just out of curiousity does RSO have a patrol school like LASD? patrol school is a refresher course for deputies heading out to patrol, since they've been in jails for a while.
SoCalSheriff
02-25-2008, 12:09 PM
Yes they do. They call it a "Transition School." It is about 2 weeks long and you attend it before going to your new station.

Can anyone tell me the correct site address for the resume the RSO would like you to bring in for the B.I. interview?
On the "Documents needed at the time of your background Interview" paper they gave me it says
Resume (build your resume at http://www.rc-hr.com/page366.html)
I keep getting a can't find page error.
I did find a resume builder on the site but its not on page 366 so don't know if its the same one.
If it is the same one do you click on the submit button, or do they just want you to print a copy to bring in?

My BI is Deputy Medeiros.Seems like an awesome guy...he is pretty straight forward and, i like that.
I did ok on the 1.5 mile run i missed the 13 min mark. I shouldn't have a problem on the next Assessment though, i have really stepped up my work-out. I was under 13 on my lasd PAT but that was a while back. I did good on everything else 65 push-ups 36 sit-ups and the wall is pretty easy for me, i timed at 7.3 at the physical agility test. Just need to focus on long distance running.I am determined to be ready for the academy :) I know those who are not physically/Mentally prepared will regret it big time!!

I am glad to see you all progressing thru the process. So does anyone have inv. logan? That was my b/i. As for the May academy you would need to have everything completed 3-4 weeks prior to the academy starting in order for you to attend the academy, typically. The Captain will have a meeting with your b/i which is called the hiring meeting where they find out who out of their group is going to attend the academy. this should happen sometime in the middle of April. And this is a good gauge on whether or not you are close to getting into the may academy, for their is one also scheduled out 3 months later.
Good luck to all

I'm also in background with SDSD (since Mar. 20). My BI-er said to contact him in four weeks from my first sit-down with him. In addition, we've had some email correspondence. So I think it would be OK to call to check in once a month or so.
My references just got their questionnaires last weekend, so I know it's going forward. Apparently, that's the slowest part of the whole process -- getting the references to return their questionnaires. Do you know if yours got them yet?

My question is the fallowing; will my BI see this as a bad move on my part to let him know that I am testing with other agencies? Will this maybe make him move a little bit faster on my background package or would he just right DQ me? All comments welcome…..

You still have quite a bit of waiting to do. Generally it takes about two months to be assigned to a BI after you've submitted your background packet. But once you do meet with your BI, everything gets processed real quick. You will be scheduled for your polygraph when you meet with your BI, which could be a day or two after the meeting. They will not start on your package until you've passed your polygraph. After you pass your polygraph, you will be given a conditional offer, which allows them to send you to complete your psych and medical evaluation. Meanwhile, they will generally complete your backgrounds in about a month or two. This allows any medical holds to be cleared by the time your background package is completed and submitted for approval and presentation to the Chief.

I kind of wanna go and test with them also! Are they really hiring alot of Deputies? I am currently on backgrounds with SDSO since early Feb. but I have not heard anything yet from the BI....Should I contact the BI or should I just wait another month?
Yes, RSO is hiring like crazy right now. They process faster than SDSO, so you really need to figure out where you want to go. Cause once you receive an offer, your response should be "thank you sir/mamm". Remember, this is a 25-30 year career you're getting into. And ideally, you want to start and finish with the same agency.
Would I put all my eggs in one basket? No. What I would do is choose the top 3 agencies I would love to work for, then apply. Other agencies realize they are not going to be the only one you apply to. After all, you're trying to find a job, and the process is long...they know this. I wouldn't recommend shotgunning your app out though...just pick 3 or 4.
If you want an update from your BI, the general rule is you may contact them once a month for an update, or to ask them if they need you to help them with any information gathering (i.e. references, contact info, etc).

I turned in mypacket 3/19/08 and still waiting to hear from a BI.... I too am in the academy preparation class at ben clark training center... I would suggest that if are looking to attend an academy, contact your BI or academy to sign up. It definately helps out with your physical fitness prep but also gives you an inside line on knowing some of the staff!!!!
You should be assigned to a BI in about two weeks.
Good luck.

So it’s May now and I been in backgrounds for a few months. Riverside Sheriff and another local PD are testing next week. I really want to test with them to expand my opportunities. My question is the fallowing; will my BI see this as a bad move on my part to let him know that I am testing with other agencies? Will this maybe make him move a little bit faster on my background package or would he just right DQ me? All comments welcome…..
If I were you, I'd go with a Sheriff's department over a local PD (unless the PD is large like SDPD or LAPD)...but that's me.
No, your BI will generally not see this as a bad move. It is very difficult to find good quality people. If they really want you, they will process fast. They are aware that it is very competitive out there, and you can't just rely on one agency to process at their own pace.
When and if you do send out your applications to other agencies, you should notify your BI via e-mail stating you've sent out your apps to RSO and/or the local PD; and you will keep them apprised of the status of each agency via e-mail. SDSD does sometimes have an issue with not receiving all their e-mails however, so if the subject is very important and you haven't received a response in a timely manner, you should follow up with a telephone call.

It's been 1 1/2 months for me. I checked in with my BI this week and he said four questionnaires have not been returned (I'm thinking this is about half of the total). He said this is right on target. I hope so, but I'm still gonna light a fire under the collective butts of my references. ;)
CP, I too would light a fire...you really do need to follow-up with your references...in fact, they should be aware that they are to expect a letter from your agency; of which needs to be completed and returned immediately. The longer your references take, the more likelyhood the letter gets misplaced.
Good luck.

If your background isn't completed within a year for RSO, do you have to go through the process all over again?
Generally, what I've seen is, when your evaluation is over one year old, you will have to take it again. For example, if your psych was approved in April 1, 2007, and for some odd reason your background packet is completed today, you would need to go back and complete another psych evaluation to bring that current...and yes, you would have to suffer through the 700-900 MMPI test again. But if your medical was approved in July 1, 2007, unless there was some form of injury or accident since the medical evaluation, your medical would still be considered current.

Once you get your written results you will receive an invite to take the PAT. As long as you can get from point A to point B without falling down you should be OK. I don't know if you are former military but if you aren't I suggest practicing the wall climb and dummy drag. Those seemed to be the areas I saw the most individuals struggle. If you are former military brush up on the ol' chicken wing. It's like riding a bike; you never forget but you can get rusty pretty fast.

Does anyone know if the fence at the Bundy avenue course is like the fence at SBSO academy near Glen Helen? What does RSO have to keep you from stabbing your hand and then having to update your tetanus shot? Also what is consisted of in the background orientation? Turning in your packet?

The fence has a pad on it, so no problems getting stabbed. In the background orientation, they talk about what needs to be on your PHS, plus you'll have to write an autobiography. Your PHS will need to be hand printed, block letters. The orientation is a lot of info and Q&A.

I didn't take my PAT on Bundy but the fence Riverside used at College of the Desert was portable, one side chainlink and one side solid. It had a 2x4 running across the top, nobody left with more holes than they came with. The RSD website has pictures.
The background orientation consisted of a Dectective giving a detailed briefing on the process from start to finish. They go through the packet page by page. If memory serves it took an hour, +/-. Once you complete the package drop it off at the office there at the Academy (address on the package). Then cross your fingers and wait to hear from the BI you are assigned.

I graduated with the 175th and for the previous posts, you need to be able to get over the 6' wall and during the academy better be able to get over it with a bullet proof vest and gear! If not work on it or your not going to be ready. There are 1000 candidates per recruit that actually makes it. Must take it seriously. There are plenty that have come before you that thought they could and now they are filling the positions at burger king, wal mart, kmart. If you are locky to graduate with my dept. you will be sent where they need you, not where you think where you want, or need to be. Finish like me in the top 15 out of 83 and you may be sent to court services! just be lucky you have a job, be able to wear the star and work as a peace officer. It is awesome, but definetly hard work!!

as for those of you that are looking at other agencies as well as procrssing with my agency I say go for it, nothing is for sure and you dont want to have anything else going on if in fact something goes south with rso. Also we are hiring alot of folks right now, and I dont beleive telling them that you are processing with other agencies is going to hurt for they understand, but also because of the applicant numbers, I dint think they are going to speed up the process as well. They have so many, that at this stage in the game it wont have much significants.

Chrisari, since you applied or submitted your BI package in on 7/8, you probably won't hear from a BI until about 9/8. It generally takes about two months for a BI to be assigned to you because of their case load. The BIs have a case load of about 30 applicants each.
Good luck, once you are assigned a BI, everything moves very fast.

I just talked to one of my buddies who is lateraling over to RSO and he told me that he received a call from his BI that they were coming out to his house as the final stage of the hiring process.... Anyone know if this is true or not?
Why do they need to meet with you at your house? and is that a good thing or bad thing if its not normal for them to meet you at your house.
Wanna Be,
The home visit is actually the final stage of the Bkgd process. They do that with every applicant. Just about every agency will conduct a home visit / neighboorhood check toward the end of your Bkgd process. This is a good thing, that means your friend is still in the process.
You'll have your BI and his/or her partner visit you at your home; they will meet with you, conduct a visual scan of your house to see if you have any drugs, have bottles of beer laying around, how you live (like a slob or are you organized), they will meet with your parents (if you live with your parents), they will meet with your spouse and children (if you have those too). They will ask how do they feel about you pursuing a career in LE. Are they supportive, etc. They will call your parents if they don't reside with you. They will also contact your adjacent neighboors to see what kind of neighbor you are...party animal, keep to yourself, helpful, etc. If you don't know your neighbors, you will be suprised how much they know of you as far as your habits and how you act.
Good luck.

Does anyone know how long it usually takes before they hire you (if they hire you) once you pass your med, and physc?
I'm waiting on the call for the visit to the house since that is the last stage of your background.
I'm really excited about this possible opportunity, but I don't want to get my hopes up to high since I haven't got the call yet.
Anyone else had the house visit or waiting on the house visit as the last step?
My BI said once everything is complete, it goes to a round table which consist of managment who decided who is hired and who is not. Then I guess you will get a call later that week or the week after. Any info?
Your BI will generally finish your background at the end of 2nd month of when your backgrounds began. RSO has what's called a hiring meeting, where they would have all the BI's and the Chief of Staff (Dep Chief) attend. Your BI will basically sell you to the staff...indicating the reasons why you're a good asset to the agency. This hire meeting is usually once a month, and typically around the beginning of the month. If your file is completed say after the hire meeting for that month, then you won't be presented until the following scheduled meeting.
Once the Chief gives her blessing, your file will be sent over to HR, where they will contact you within a couple of weeks to schedule a time for the orientation/paper signing.

So does anyone know what the physical agility is like? I'm going to go in 2 weeks and just curious on what to expect. I know there are the 2 jumps, the run, body drag and obstacle course. Any heads up on what the obstacle course was?
Reason I ask is because I have a bad knee that I sprained in a soccer game almost 3 weeks ago and it still somewhat hurts. I'm ok with running, but jumping over a wall might irritate it a bit and same with squatting down a bit to drag a body. It's 2 weeks away, so I'm going to rest and hopefully it will be ok.

It isn't bad at all. The obstacle course consists of a couple curb-high obstacles and one that is waist high (think of a sawhorse). The wall climb is where I individuals seemed to have the most problems. If you haven't, go find a 6 foot wall and jump it a few times. Even with the bum knee if you are in decent shape you'll be fine.

If that is your concern take it easy going over. When I took the PAT they ran it in circuits (groups rotate through each station) and the 500 yard run was last. My advice? Sell out, you'll have a couple weeks easy to recover.
As for the orientation ours was immediately after the PAT. We filed in a room still in our workout clothes, no need to change. The orientation took a couple hours while a Detective went over the entire background process/personal history statement. Change your shirt, grab a pen and some water and settle in to pay attention.

I'm gonna toot my own horn here but I changed after the test into a suit at my car (per some advice I received here) then went to the orientation. Like USMC5711 says theres no need to change but the BI that did our orientation overview asked me if I had done the physical test and when I told him I had he said "I was the man". Yea, point system would be great.
Thanks again Nate. The reason I asked about attire was because the letter said "immediately" after the agility. But if they give us a minute or two then I might just take it. But if we don't interview with anyone then I'll have to figure out what to do.

Nate, do you know how the point system works? How many points for each event?
Thanks!
The events that score the highest is the solid wall and the o-course. The 500 yd run scores the least. SO...depending on what flight you are, meaning, if you're running the 500 yrd first...don't wear yourself out going 1000% on the run, then find you're slow as mud going over that solid wall. Generally if you're running 1:30 or so in the 500 yd, you'll be fine.
Also work on your pushups and situps.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info Viffer. Are pushups and situps part of the agility test too? I didn't think you were tested on those until pre academy? I'm not too worried, just curious.

RSO makes you do the run last. you kinda choose what you do first and next but that may be because they just didn't care after running the Corrections people. I do have a point break down but i'm leaving and busy the rest of the day maybe tomorrow guys sorry.

For what it is worth Dodger I wouldn't sweat the "I just finished the agility now what do I wear" question. As I said earlier I didn't pull a Superman and duck in to a phone booth to put on a coat and tie, and I just signed my conditional offer with Riverside today.
As for the test itself don't stress. If you're in good enough shape to sprain your knee playing soccer you should do fine. I was freaked out about times and scores before I took mine and I passed. What really matters is getting in shape for the academy... and not losing your mind throughout the selection process.
Good luck

As of now, RSD hasn't incorporated the pushups and situps in their PAT yet. But when I was going through the hiring process with them, my BI mentioned they were thinking about adding in the timed pushups/situps.
You should be working on your pushups/situps anyway...1) when you have your interview, you could indicate you are working on them to prepare for the academy. 2) You'll be that much more prepared on Black Monday when everyone else is pushing like a worm.

I need some help I'm filling out the background packet and need a couple questions answered. I served a church mission for a year but don't remember names of most of the people I lived with during that time and I don't know how to contact any of them presently. As yo can tell I wasn't close with them after the mission. any ideas???

I heard after taking my initial physical assessment back in june that after Sept., RSO was planning to have academy classes every month following til the end of this year. Is this still true?

Class 177 starts Tuesday, Sept. 2nd. Class 178 starts Tuesday, Oct. 14th. After that I've heard one will be starting sometime in December and another either late January or early February.

Can anyone tell me if they are slowing the hiring for Riv. Co. Corrections?
Is there a Exam prep book I could study before I schedule to take my exam? Any book recommendation? Thanks

DF2338 Yes they do expidited hiring call their HR and they'll answer questions or their recruitment line both on the website http://www.riversidesheriff.org/
Is the requirements for DST any different from the Corrections officer? Or do you go through the same process?

Thanks nate. I emailed a recuriter, has been cool so far. Even mentioned possibly starting higher on the pay scale due to being popo in va. I am surprised that they would give you a raise for experience without a post waiver? Is that common for other cali depts? If so that makes Las vegas look worse in comparision:)
By the way, does anyone have a link to their pay scale? I want to know how long it takes to top out? Thanks much.

Hey there guys, first post on here! :P
I just passed the Riverside CO Sheriff written exam this morning and have the Physical Assessment next Wednesday, the 10th.
As far as what the test is like...I don't know if this is typical or not, but I was way over-prepared after reading the prep books; the test consisted of a timed, 70-question, increasingly advanced word associations (antonyms and synonyms..."what word means the same/opposite as ____" with multiple choices) followed by 225 psychological assessment questions.
After you complete that, you are either handed a flyer saying you passed or one saying you have 6 months to wait before trying again.
As far as corrections goes, when you arrive you fill out a sheet saying whether you are applying for Deputy Sheriff or Corrections, or both. I checked only Sheriff, but when I received the "passing" flyer, it said verbatim that I qualified for the Sheriff Trainee/Corrections Trainee. In other words, its the same test, and yes they are hiring for it.
I'll be in here a lot more often as questions come up; I've learned much from here already, it is a very handy source!
