I have a question. I'm presently employed with two security companies. I work full time with one as an armed guard. The other company I work more of an oncall status. The one that I work full time for I only make 10.50 an hour but the majority of people that are also employed are very un-professional, and the ethics aren't the greatest. I was granted a transfer from one jobsite to another because I didn't want a (bad) reputation by association. I've had a few jobs over the past 2 years but i'm looking at quitting the oncall company, switching from full time to part time or on call and getting a better paying job with an armored truck company. My main goal is to get hired with a police agency in the so cal area but I want to know if switching will hurt my chances of becoming a trainee and getting sponsored through POST. I feel that working with the armored truck company will prove my integrity that I have cause I don't have great credit (student loans) but it's not horrible either. Advice from all appreciated but those with background experience or recruiters are greatly appreciated.

i doubt that switching will hurt your chances. from what you tell us i think your headed in the right direction. im not a police officer but ive been aplying and the interviews ive had so far they always ask me if i have any expiriance that would help....and in your case, the security jobs will be a great plus

Nate, why does your profile say that you are a sworn officer?
But to answer your question, you should be fine. And no, a change of job will not hurt you, just makes your background wait that much longer. The more jobs you have the more work they have to look into. If that means anything to you.

I worked for an armored car company before becoming a deputy. I loved the people but hated the job. People know what's in the truck. Most of the time you have one driver and one guy "hopping." not a great job and didn't pay much. Don't expect much more if any then your last job. And the cost of living is higher here.

Nate, why does your profile say that you are a sworn officer?
And they won't grant me sworn status since I'm a Reserve. sheesh! jk
OP...just make sure you end on good terms with all of your employers/supervisors. Like LB Blue said, the more work experience, the longer backgrounds will take.

The only way changing jobs hurts is if you have alot of jobs in a short period of time. Even if they are to better yourself. If you change security companies often, will you be a loyal officer or jump ship at the next better offer. Just an observation from doing backgrounds.
