Hello Everyone...I've been perusing this site for a couple of weeks and thought it time that I introduce myself. I was recently hired and will be part of the April 2008 SD Sheriff's (LE) class. I'm currently living on the East Coast and will be moving to sunny San Diego at the beginning of April.
I've done a few searches on here regarding new recruit training but I haven't noted anyone discussing exactly how recruits are treated. I was in the US Army and I am no stranger to harsh treatment and mind games. But I am curious as to whether or not the instructors at the academy would conduct themselves along the same lines as military instructors? I recently viewed a video on YouTube of an incoming LA Sheriff's cadet class and had flashbacks to Full Metal Jacket.
Also, can anyone give me a play by play of what a "typical" cadet's day would be like? Something along the lines of: 7:00 AM Formation, 8:00 AM PT, 9:00 AM Shower, etc.
I'm interested to know if anyone attending the July '08 class would be interested in putting together a group to bounce idea's off of. Remember, there's strength in numbers...
Thank you for any and all help. This site is a god-send!

The first few days are the worst. You go through the academy with SDPD and the other surrounding agency's also. It's not that bad. The first few days they yell, make you run the stairs, you march for hours. It's to weed out the weak and to set a tone for the rest of the academy. I enjoyed it. You'll fall in a grove and won't mess up as much. I love the SDSO. I'm happy where I am. Congrats on making it. I've been told we hire 4% of what applies.

Mab...Thanks for the reply. I figured it was going to be a little like Basic Training the first week or two. It's good to hear those statistics, only 4%...wow.
It was a long process for me because I was an out of state applicant. I took the written in October '06! My original BI dropped the ball on my packet, I had to re-take the written because so much time had passed. Good thing was that I did better the second time around. I was originally supposed to start with the Jan. 22nd class, but I just couldn't leave my current job with so little notice. Anyway, it's good to hear I made the right choice. You sound like you enjoy what you do; I want to work with motivated persons such as yourself. See you soon!
There are a few weeks of semi-stress and it gets less and less as the weeks go on. If you are prior military then it will not be an issue. As far as the academy schedule it will vary by day. Some days were formation, inspection, then different classes throughout the day. Some days there was formation, PT, showers, classes. Some days PT was in the afternoon. There will be some activites such as driving, shooting range, etc that your schedule will change and you will be going at night. Your fist day of the academy you will receive an academy schedule detailing your schedule depending on which "section" you are in. There could be up to 3 different sections and each will have a different schedule. The best thing will be to meet up with those that are assigned to your section to try to find carpool buddies, study groups, etc. but its hard to do that until you know who is in your section because your fellow SDSO recruits may be mixed throughout.
Good luck and congratulations.
Expect the worse and hope for the best.
Stay physically fit, study for the tests & maintain/show a good attitude. PM me if you have any questions about patrol.
