Gortiz,
My best friend is testing with BP.
You do not need to be bi-lingual but you will have to learn Spnish from what I understand.

Something to keep in mind.

He has been in the process for two and a half months.

The Border Patrol hires VERY fast right now. 3 or 4 years back it took about 6-9 months to get on. Before that it was over a year to get a class date.
they have not got it down to less than 3 months. It will be hard to find any local PD that will get you through that quick. But some can get close.

I will warn you to decide if it is the right career for you though. Do you just want to get into LE, with no opinion as to what line of LE you prefer? If you want to be a street cop, go that route. If the PA truly interests you in and of itself, than go for it too. Its a good job with excellent training.

Mostly fiction, there are some applicants that the process only takes 3 months or less. However, most are still waiting 6-9 months, with some waiting over a year.

I started the application/testing process in September and started my academy in February. When we are in a slower hiring phase they dont push quite so fast. It all depends on how badly they need people and how good of a candidate you appear to be.

As said by madchicken, mostly fiction. There are some that have rapid processing timelines that are about three months, but that is not the norm. Expect to wait anywhere from 6-12 months from the time of application to the time of entrance on duty. It took me exactly 365 days to be hired from start to finish.

Truthfully, it all depends on the luck of the draw and how quickly your stars align per se as their is no rhyme nor reason to the hiring process.

Also, as said by another poster, make sure the life of a PA is what you want. Yes, we are a law enforcement agency, but we do not fit the bill of the typical "street cops" that some recent applicants have for some reason had the misfortune of envisioning themselves as upon graduation from the academy.

If you are excited by the idea of your office being the great outdoors, where more times than most, you are single handedly tasked with tracking out groups of aliens through the deserts, mountains, brush, lakes and so forth with nothing more than your eyes, spidey-sense, and a flashlight (if that) for what could be a nine hour push (walk) after them, most of it spent running through rugged terrain to make up for time... then drop the application.

If the first thought to your mind is "sweet" at the sound of being laid-in (hiding in a stationary position somewhere out in your area) on a cold, rainy, windy night while your hands are numb and your nose is runny while you just wait for hours in anticipation of apprehending the group of dope mules you had intel on that would be coming down the trail that you're at, then we need more people like you.

However, if you are one of the typical applicants of the Microwave Generation that I have had the misfortune of not only seeing but being associated with, that are looking to go into law enforcement, and specifically the Patrol, for just a paycheck, for a badge and gun, along with "job security..." then please, go to the hood and apply to be an armed security guard at a check cashing place or a fast food joint. You'll gain all the same expectations there. This profession and this agency is being ruined day after day as the flood gates open and its a sad thing to see, especially knowing that some of these types are going to be your back-up on hot calls.

that actually does sound pretty sweet. my biggest thing with fed jobs is having to move around. I dont want to be getting transferred all over the place.

It depends on the Agency and the position. If you don't want to promote, the Border Patrol will not move you unless you request it.

Don't worry about moving with the patrol. You will not be transfering any place whatsoever unless you luck out become a sup. For better or worse you will be stuck.

Does any know what is the starting pay for a border patrol agent? I live here in San Diego and own a home, once done withe academy is there a possibility you would get station here in San Diego or do they just put you where ever they want?

GB0610

Because of there current great need, it is VERY likely you will be able to get a station in the SD area. You can argue for it if they offer you somewhere else. They will give you the office you are going to work out of at the time they offer you an academy date.

Go to OPM.gov and check under salaries in the LE scale. You will start as either a GS-5 or GS-7, depending on experience and education. You will then jump up to a GS-7/9/11 each year and then stop there and go 11 step 1, step 2 , step 3, etc. If you come on as a GS-7, after two years, you'll be at a base salary of $58,741. There is AUO/OT on top of that.

I would second the opinion to think a couple of times. I used to recommend the Border Patrol whole heartedly to people as a law enforcement job. My conversations with Border Patrol agents over the last year or two have resulted in me not doing that anymore.

Every agency goes through bad times, where it is not a good place to work, and one of theirs appears to be happening right now. Go talk to some rank and file BP agents who you can get a no crap opinion from (through a mutual acquaintence or something), and make up your own mind.

In general transfering in the patrol is very, very hard. But with that said it is easier to transfer to the northern border than to another southern border sector. Last I heard you could transfer to Buffalo NY in about three years which is very very fast for a BP transfer. The only reason why you can transfer there is because nobody wants to go there. The good places on the northern border will take at least 7 years to get to. I know a sup in CA who has been trying to transfer back home to El Paso for 12 years and it ain't happening. Don't go into the patrol if you think you can transfer to where you want to be in a couple of years. It does not work that way. Also don't join the patrol just to have a job. Its too damn hard of a gig for that and the money sucks in CA for a BPA. State taxes and cost of living in SD make a lot of agents very ****ed. Its not so bad in the imperial valley but it is hot as hell there and nothing to do. Overall if you really want to be a bpa pick AZ as your geo pref. Its your best shot at making a decent living in the patrol and having some kind of life if you luck out and get tucson or casa grande. The bp is a very hard gig. Don't go into just to have a "job". The hours are long and the pay is not that good when you consider the 10 hours of AUO pay per week is straight time pay. Also with fed LE in general, once you get up in the GS pay scale, OT is not compensated at 1.5 times base salary. So if the money is a primary factor, don't go for the patrol. Its just too hard of a job to do just for money. Especially in the state of California where the money sucks for a patrol agent. Good luck.

I have a friend in the Academy right now in New Mexico. It took him 2 months to from the time of his testing to the time of him entering the academy.
