Does anyone what specific areas of the county the sheriff's department patrols, because where I live in the county I've seen their patrol cars maybe once in the last three or four years.

Well, here are a few of the areas - Clarence, Akron/Alden, Grand Island, Colden, Springville. You'll see the marine division along the Niagara River during the summer. Aviation will also assist other PD's as needed. Transport of prisoners to local courts is a big function. Any other questions you could contact headquarters out at Chestnut Ridge.

If they want too, they are still allowed to enter towns and villages with their own departments, right?

If you're asking can they travel anywhere within their geographic area of jurisdiction, then the answer is yes. They have countywide authority. Much like a State Trooper can arrest anywhere within the state. That being said, it is not a normal practice for a deputy to enter a town such as Amherst, Tonawanda, or Cheektowaga that has a full time police department and answer their routine calls for service. The efforts are concentrated on the towns/villages that have no police force of their own.

I just went through the academy with several EC sheriffs.. And even I have only seen their cars on the street once in a while.. they are in the more rural areas, as someone else already mentioned.. Wilson, Newfane, Clarence, etc. They also do prisoner transports and they can/will assist other officers from other municipalities.
