top pay is $72,000. but you reach that at 26 years. yes I said you hit that at 26 years. Your under railroad retirement which is 30 years and you give up your right to social security. Its a somewhat private police department so you can be replaced by security at any time in your career. They have alot of units like K9, ESU, Detective Division, and JTTF. The starting pay is around $40,000. The chart is not very good, and alot of APO's complain about management screwing them on everything.
They do have RMP patrols around penn station and answer jobs the same as MTAPD, the main portion of the job is to patrol penn station. 75% of penn is run by Amtrak, and 25% is MTA, so APD really runs things down there but MTAPD has more officers assigned there.
I actually happen to know alot more about APD, since a few of my friends worked there. Any questions just ask, I'll probably know the answer.

HEY THANKS FOR THE REPLY. YOU ARE THE GURU I WAS LOOKING FOR. WELL SOUNDS LIKE THAT JOB HAS ITS PROS AND CONS. I WOULD NOT BE HAPPY ABOUT GIVING UP SOCIAL SECURITY AND NOT HAVING ANY CIVIL SERVICE JOB SECURITY. AND 25+ YEARS TO REACH TOP PAY IN BONKERS. THERE MUST BE ALOT OF OVERTIME WITH THE TERRORIST PROBLEMS AND HOMELAND SECURITY ACTS IN PLACE? ARE THEY NYS/NYC POLICE OFFICERS, FEDERAL POLICE OFFICERS OR PRIVATE ARMED GUARDS FOR THE RAILROAD?? DO THEY HAVE THE OWN ACADEMY? AND DO THEY HAVE STATUATORY POWERS OF ARREST WITH 24/7 OFF-DUTY CARRY ON BADGE??

they are sent through the NYPD academy for the full 6 months, they are certified NYS Police Officers with arrest and carry off duty. OT is pretty good, if you want it you got it. Alot of posts require riding the train from penn NY, to the stations in PA so you'll be out of state and can rack the OT up like that.
I believe at the 5 year mark you hit $52,000. A lot of people like to know what the 5 year mark in pay is, so I figured I'd tell you.
Its not a bad job, you can move around if you want, promotions, detective, special units. Good luck.

Thank you that was great information and i appreciate you reaching out. Just two more questions. Does Amtrack pay you while you are attending the NYPD Academy? Being that they travel for state to state, do the officers have some kind of dual state powers or ferderal LEO powers? I has seen some of thier agency's RMPs and i think i saw government plates.

yes they are a quasi government agency and I believe they are commissioned in the states they will work in. APD pays you to attend the academy

I am sure Philly is a great city, but unfortunately that is too far for me to be stationed. A friend of mine is a officer in queens and he works his tours during the week and commutes back to Philly to be with his family. 3 hours each way and gallons of gas every weekend. I couldnt do it. He took the Amtrack test with me so i will tell him about a closer location,

Yes. We have had a new contract with the devil for a few months now.

What the hell is "hireing"? Do you mean hiring? You might want to make spellcheck your friend.
As far as being the police for the station and a few blocks is far from it. Philly division stretchs very far to include everything from the NJ/PA line to the DE/MD line and goes as far west as Harrisburg.
Also Philly pd is not always "hireing" or hiring (for those of us who prefer proper english). They operate on civil service rules which require someone to live in the city for one year prior to being appointed.

Hey ORLANDOFED5-0
What kind of starting pay do you think newly appointed Officers will get, if the new contract manifests

I have yet to hear of a Amtrak PO going through the NYPD academy.
I have had MTA and SUNY in my class, but never a APO.
Thats news to me.

By NY law, if the Amtrak P/O lives in NY state they must attend a NYS academy. I know they have sent people through Westchester, Nassau and the NYPD academy. If they live elsewhere then they attend FLETC.

When I took the test in August/2007 The HR department officers told us that when appointed we can choose to go to a NYS approved Police Academy. Most LEO(POLICE) agencies go to NYPD Academy when they do not have a Academy of their own. After passing will will then have additional Amtrack Training.

Starting Pay for Amtrak NY is around $48,000. Orlando is right, if you live in NY you go to a NY academy. If you live in NJ and work for Amtrak NY you go to FLETC.

In the academy you get paid around$45,000 and then once you get out you jump up to the next step which is 95%.
