your uncle needs to transfer the handgun to you. go with him to a gun store and expect to pay $50 or so for the State fees and their time. Then they keep it for ten days....

Personally, I would wait on that. When you go for the psych the will ask if you have a gun. If you do then they will grill you about it. Better just to wait.

LA Dep, where did you get your info? Post a link to prove your info. PPT are $35.

As long as the guns are legal and registered, it doesn't matter.

shot,

Been in 4 gunshops over the last 2-3 weeks...all have the info posted.......

It's $125 total....includes all of the fees....but this MIGHT only be for FFL to FFL transfers though....one of several reasons that I stopped bidding on gunbroker......I'm not coughing up that amount just to do a transfer....

The impression I got from the guys at the shops was this was the new amount for all transfers......since CA hasnt been able to run out all of the FFL dealers, they will just tax them........yet another reason to MOVE

it's probably $125 for FFL to FFL and not PPT. it's against the law to charge more than $35 for PPT , but stores can charge as much as they want for FFL transfers. you'll have to do the 10 day background check, handgun written test if you haven't done so. the handgun must be Ca legal.

in the past all the applications and psych tests and backgrounds i've been in, i've never been asked if i own a gun. i don't think there's anything wrong with it. i'm sure lots of cops have a ton of guns.

It's $35 for a PPT.

BTW: Who is charging $125?

Maybe, maybe not. I was asked by one Dr. and not by another. I owned 5 handguns when I was asked. Didn't mean anything.

I was given a handgun by my brother in law about 3 months ago. I went on the DOJ website where they had forms to fill out for gun registration. Filled out the one page form, sent in a check for 17.00 dollars and 6 weeks later received a confirmation of change of ownership from the DOJ.

Turners; Oaktree; LAPRAC; are charging $125.....this is probably for a FFL to FFL transfer then...not a 'walk in' transfer........

I paid $70 for the same thing last October....last time I did a gunbroker.com transaction.....

A lot of these retail businesses charge more than necessary (required) when the FFL to FFL involves new firearms to discourage the buyer from doing business with other retail establishments. I recently bought a used gun via an out of state FFL through one of the businesses mentioned and was charged only $50.00 for the DROS (Dealer's Report of Sales) and this occurred since the first of the year. Although DOJ might allow dealers to charge the $125.00, it probably isn't mandated and you might get a better deal by shopping around.

I'll have to scout around then....Oaktree was pretty cool about it as long as it wasnt a new gun they had in inventory, which I understood and did not have any problems with.....I've seen some good deals on gunbroker, but I dont want to cough up $125 more on a $600 weapon....

How much is the Dealer's Record of Sale (DROS) fee?

The State's DROS fee is $19.00 which covers the costs of the background checks and transfer registry. There is also a required $1.00 Firearms Safety Testing fee and a $5.00 Safety and Enforcement fee. If the transaction being processed is a dealer sale, consignment return, or return from pawn, the dealer may impose other charges as long as this amount is clearly shown as a "dealer fee" and not misrepresented as a state fee. In the event of a private party transfer, the firearms dealer may additionally charge a fee of $10 per firearm transferred.

When settling on the purchase price of a firearm and before completing the transaction, you may want to ask the dealer to disclose and identify any and all fees he/she is charging to complete the transaction.

I want to sell a gun to another person, i.e., a private party transfer. Am I required to conduct the transaction through a licensed California firearms dealer?

Yes. Firearm sales must be conducted through a fully licensed California firearms dealer. Failure to do so is a violation of California law. The buyer (and seller, in the event that the; buyer is denied), must meet the normal firearm purchase and delivery requirements. "Antique firearms," as defined in Section 921(a)(16) of Title 18 of the United States Code, and curio or relic rifles/shotguns, defined in Section 178.11 of Title 27 of the Code of Federal Regulations that are over 50 years old, are exempt from this requirement.

Firearms dealers are required to process private party transfers upon request. Firearms dealers may charge a fee not to exceed $10 per firearm for conducting a private party transfer. Example:

For a private party transfer involving one or more handguns, the total allowable fees, including the DROS, safety, and dealer transfer fees, are not to exceed $35.00 for the first handgun and $31.00 for each additional handgun involved in the same transaction.

For private party transfers involving one or more long guns, or a private party transfer involving one handgun, the total allowable fees, including the DROS, safety, and dealer transfer fees, are not to exceed $35.00. The dealer may charge an additional dealer-service fee of$10.00 per each additional firearm transferred.
