Suffolk County has removed the old list from it's website this morning. Look for the new one to go up probably within the week.

Yea i see, I recieved a 95 i guess not to bad. Question: Will i defienetly get called and how long till they try putting a class together. Also i have a couple of friends who didn't do as well, how far down the list do they usually go or did they go for the last list? One more thing do suffolk correction officers carry a pistol on and/or off duty? Im pretty sure they are considered peace officers but not to sure what that means.

Congrats! I also scored a 95. I dont know how far on the list they go but suffolk corrections officers are peace officers and carry an off duty pistol as far as I understand.

Hey guys I scored a 95 also. As far as how low of a score they will call on the list, I know that they have reached the bottom on past exams. I know a guy who has the job now, and he got on with a score of 70. They seem to move through the list pretty fast. From what I hear there is a pretty high turn over rate within the department. Anyways best of luck to everyone!

I'd like to ask the usual questions on here, like what's the salary chart for the Suffolk Corrections, what's the shift schedule like, and when does anybody think they'd start to call people off this new list?
richbrown123456
01-31-2008, 09:30 AM
Question: I am on my last full semester but I have 2 more classes that need to be taking for me to graduate. So if corrections were to call me are they lenient at all with scheduling so that I would be able to finish school? I understand this would not be possible at first but like a year down the road after being hired will they make any time for me to go to school I can probably do it all 1 day a week in the morning or night but if they are going to give me random scheduling with no regards for my schedule I will not be able to accomplish this so just wondering if there’s any way for me to finish once I am in?

Looks like I am in the 95 club too. I agree with 2grit. Most corrections jobs have a pretty high turn-over. I guess once people start doing the job, they realize they don't like it. Which is a good thing, because you don't want anybody like that around when the crap hits the fan.

Alot of people in the Suffolk Sheriff Corrections Division use the CO job as a "stepping stone" to the Suffolk County Police or the Suffolk Sheriff Law Enforcement Division (aka deputy sheriffs).
That is also why they hire more COs more frequently and in larger numbers then they do for deputy sheriffs or for SCPD officers.

I was told by a sheriff that they go through alot of applicants and their is also a high turn over rate within corrections itself. They also need alot of people from what I am told. The sheriff I talked to said they probably will reach into the 90's from the first pull.

Im also intrested but there is very limited info it seems. My wifes friends son is a corrections officer going into his 2nd year. He said he loves the job. He also said he made 50,000 with overtime his first year.Thats good or bad depending on your current position. He just got a 2nd raise and is very excited about there new contract in the works. For now all we can do is wait for the letter to go in for testing and pass each part and keep moving foward. In the end you will have all the information you need to decide if the job is for you.

From what I have heard from some CO's that I know, is that they are looking to hire about 80 people from the first canvass. Apparently corrections was supposed to have an academy class of about 40 new hires last year. However this class was canceled at the last minute. With retirements, and people leaving for other jobs they are really short staffed.

This was the one job that I really was hoping I would get. I got a canvas letter for the NYS DOC, but I really don't want to move off the Island again. I was thinking Suffolk would be hiring a good amount of C.O.'s because of the new facility being built(or is already built, I don't know). Maybe somebody could shed some light on that.

The new facility isn't done yet and won't for a while. From what I am told that they need alot of people but because of budget problems they only can look to hire about 80 people for the next academy. Their is a academy in now and someone I know told me that they want to put a academy in around May and that is why the results came out so early. I don't think that is enough time to process people for a May academy. In my opinion I'm think of a fall or winter academy.

the reason the results posted early is in case when the contract is settled VIA binding arbitration (there's a 1st time for everything,I know),there are over 60 people in the department that can retire this year but are waiting for the decision regarding retro active monies to be paid and no one want to retire and not get paid....we are now into our 5th year without a contract.
the deputies that retired a few years back did not see the back pay when there contract was settled.....hope this clears it up for you....my guess is there will be another 40+ recruit class later this year...

They might've done a lottery if they had an overflow of people who responded back yes. What might not matter at this point, is what you got on the test. After you get the first letter and sent back yes, they might have just taken those and grouped them into a separate list of people who are interested in the job. Might explain why somebody with a 100 didn't get a letter and people with 95s did. This is just pure speculation, but it would be a likely scenario. I also do sort of remember the first letter we all got saying that if you were to send back the letter with a yes, you were going to be put onto a different list.

I was kinding wondering why they sent the first letters to those of us with 90s but we didnt the orientation letters, maybe they were seeing how many people would respond. They probably got a good feedback on the response letters which is why I guess the 90s didnt get a orientation letter. Thats the only scenario that would make sense.

Just some tips for you all. DO NOT ARRIVE LATE to the seminar. Be there atleast 15 minutes early in BUSINESS ATTIRE.
The packet they give out is very extensive. You need to make maps of all the places you worked and hand write the actual crossection and write the directions.
I know I am gonna have trouble remembering my one job that was off the books when I was 17-18. I can remember the guys name, but I don't remember the address. Any suggestions? I also got 2 tickets around 8-9 years ago and I can't remember the exact month/day. I tried calling up the dept's that gave them to me, but I couldn't get a straight answer. Additionally, they need to know the places you ever rented to live and the renter you were paying, plus their address. I don't know how I am gonna find this stuff.

Yeah, I am 99% positive that they issue one of the Glock versions to both deputy sheriffs and when required, to correction officers (CO's only get guns for certain assignments as almost all of their work is done inside of a secured building).
It seems that they dont regularly update their website except for the press releases section. Alot of the pages are still quoting statistics from the 1990s; ex. "In 1999, this enforcement role resulted in the issuance of 1,123 summonses for violations of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. Deputies made 79 arrests, while 719 incidents were investigated.".

Hey rich and exit you guys got me confused, when you say another academy in april does that mean for the people with 100s and 95s or are you saying another academy meaning after the 100 and 95s in this academy there wil be another one for the possibly 90s and 85s
richbrown123456
04-21-2008, 10:52 PM
I’m not sure; some kid went up to ask a question after the orientation was over. I was right behind him. He was basically saying he wasn’t sure if this job was for him, so he wanted to know how to sign for a declination. The investigator told him to call the office and they will tell him, if he doesn’t decline the proper way he will be taking off the list. If he does it the right way he can always change his mind, and there will be another class around April (it may have been a different month but I am pretty sure that’s what I heard), and since he either has a 95 or a 100 they will always call him for processing as long as he does the declination the proper way. So basically what I get out of that is the next orientation will consist of 90’s and people who have taken a declination with 95’s and 100’s. As for hiring for the next class I am not sure how that’s going to work because there is about 200 of us going for these 25-30 slots (that’s how many they said are available for the next class) so say if 40 pass everything, I would assume the 10 that don’t make the class will be in this April class I heard about, but that’s just a guess. Maybe someone else knows more about how they handle people left over, I am pretty curious my self.

hey to all who were at the orientation, did anyone notice that when they were calling some people out in the hall, some if not all did not return. the guy next to me got called out in the hall in the middle of the "speech" and never returned. i am wondering if they were possibly running prints to see who came up with stuff on their record and then calling them out. this packet stinks by the way. NOTE TO ALL MY FELLOW LADIES WHO HAVE NOT HAD ORIENTATION YET. WEAR A SUIT JACKET WHEN ATTENDING OR BE PREPARED TO BE SCREAMED AT. hey to all who were at the orientation, did anyone notice that when they were calling some people out in the hall, some if not all did not return. the guy next to me got called out in the hall in the middle of the "speech" and never returned. i am wondering if they were possibly running prints to see who came up with stuff on their record and then calling them out. this packet stinks by the way.
I noticed that too, at first I thought that they just messed up on some of the paperwork that we did so far. But they never came back… so I don’t know what happened. Maybe after getting yelled at they just didn’t want to deal with it anymore, lol.

Hey rich I got a question, you said they told you there was about 200 or so people in the pool for the job. If you look at the suffolk county eligible list between the 100s and 95s there are 358 people, do you know what happen to the rest.

I had 104 in my orintation and my buddy had 105 or 125 im not sure what he said i was on the phone with him when i asked and was loosing service lol. Im pretty sure that there was no more orintations. My guess is that they decided not to go or did not fill out the paper we receieved a couple of months back. I did see a lot of empty envolopes atleast 10 maybe even 20 (that was just from my orintation), so those had to be no shows. I dont think a lot of people really viewed this as a great oppurtunity because a lot of people cant see them selves working in a jail 9 hour (or more) a day. Im very excited. I hope i am one of the 30 they hire. sorry if im not making sense i am on my train typing with my cell phone.

definitely will the last list went all the way to 70 and that was only 2 and half years prior to this one.
Thanks guys. I know someone that's in the academy now and he says he's sure I'll get called with an 85. He took the test a couple of years ago and also scored an 85 and way more people took the test then.
I'm ****ed at myself...I thought I killed it on the test, I must have missed a 90 by one question.

All they do is sit you down and ask you for everything they told you to have. They look over your packet and make sure you answered every question. They make you use a green pen if you mess anything up/forget to put something in your packet. I guess it just makes you stand out, lol. Then they give you your PT date. Yeah I'm in the corrections process too. Have to bring my paperback on Wed. 4/30. I think the PAT date from last year was 5/15/07. What date did they give you today? Being as it's so close to a year I will probably have to do it again. I'm not really worried about failing it, just would rather not have to take another day off from work. The medical is only good for 6 months. I just recently had to do another one back in March for a different civil service job. I am also going to try and find out today if they are going to make me do the psychological again too. The one I passed from last year is from about 10 months ago. I thought the exact same thing; I remember hearing the investigators say it was May 12-May 15. I was talking to the police instructor at the academy, and he said it was only Monday and Tuesday…. that a lot of people dropped out after they gave us the packet. Not unless he was doing Mon and Tues, and other instructors were doing Wednesday and Thursday. I don’t know any candidates who had it those days though.
For what it's worth.
I recently spoke to someone I know that's in the academy (may have graduated by now) and I asked him what my chances were having scored an 85 on the test. He told me I'm getting called for sure...that approx 60-65% of the people that get called either pass up on the offer or get DQ'ed. He said it all depends on how bad you want the job....if you WANT it you'll get it, just a matter of jumping through all the hoops.
What I'm trying to say is that those numbers kinda confirm what was told to me. If you scored in the 80's (like me), hang in there cause they burn through a lot of applicants.

rich brown, a lot of times these psychologists take things waaayyyy out of context and if you hire a psych DQ attorney he will get the results of your examination, and go over it with you. Then I believe you will have an interview with a private psychologist provided by your attorney and they will evaluate you and will go into more detail, and ask more questions than the PD psych just to clarify things then send their evaluation to your attorney and you will probably have it overturned.
I have no experience with this though because I have not failed a psych exam. But this is how I'm told it works.

Getting back to your question PBXTech, I was able to speak with him yesterday. He said the summer 08 class will be canceled and the fall 08 class will most likely be canceled also. He see's us going in the Spring 09 or Summer 09 class. Levy is refusing to hire any new CO's. The police force is down 700 Officers and he isn't hiring any more for a while with that either.

Levy would rather pay overtime, it costs more to hire a new employee. Our heath care is expensive (Thats straight from the deputy county exec.) I like his theory.... we just gotta get in first, lol

If you go to Suffolk County Gevernment page and look at the budget it says it cost more in overtime because it goes by seniority & it cost more in over time than to hire new employees look at page 323 it has some good information

I guess it could be positive, depending on how you look at it. It stated that there were 41 vacancies in 2007 and they recommend "that the January 2008 class be increased to fill all vacancies that exist when the class begins." (pg.322). There was a class in January, but I wonder how many recruits were actually in it
It goes on to say that they expect many CO's to retire when the new contract comes out, and to start preparations for a July class IF this situation occurs (pg.323). But other then that they recommend a January 2009 class. (Because of the new facility being finished in late 09, and being opened in 2010)

I did see that. So clearly there is no July class but we still have hope for the Jan 09 class. It could be worse, It says there is no budget for SCPD officers for 2008 at all. And the same goes for Suffolk Deputy postions. Maybe 2009 will be a better year.

The test was established in January so it’s only been out for seven months so far. They probably aren't going to hire the first class until JAN '09. The test is good for 3-4 years so the 90's will eventually be called. Everything is just a waiting game with Civil Service. They are going to need a lot of new recruits after a lot the CO's retire though, so I don’t think you wasted your money.

Yea, I was hired after the new "overtime rule" made it into the AME contract. It's a real bummer! I found out about it when I looked at my paycheck and saw 8 hours of "O/S" instead of O/T. We had Christmas off and I worked overtime (or straight overtime as they call it) that weekend.

I am looking at the instructions for all the paperwork/documents we need to bring to our personal investigation. I see on the back of our candidate packet that they give us the phone number for Social Security for a detailed earning statement (which I know I needed for the NYPD). But I don’t see that as one of the 17 required documents that we need to bring to our investigation. It’s obviously better to have it anyway, but does anyone know if we need this or not?

i went to the first meeting and they gave me the packet and then i spoke to an investigator on the side and at first he was cool about it. Then his supervisor came over and was kind of a dick to me and told me to forget about it. It just sucks because i've never had any problem with drugs, alcohol, DV, nothing. I was just always into cars and always got in trouble with them. In my teenage years I got ALOT of tickets. Well over 100. Most were dropped when i went to court with a lawyer though. I lost my license, got arrested at 18 for driving with a suspended license and eventually got out of that habit. Then I didnt get any tickets for awhile. I ended up getting another EVO, and my gf got an STi. I got arrested in the STi 04/07 for reckless driving due to speeding. It got dropped to a 75 in a 55 violation and I did 50 hours of community service. Then in 08/07 i got nabbed for 90 in a 55 in west hampton on sunrise where theres long stretches of hwy. After that I was just FED up and i stopped doing over 70 mph. Its been a year and a half since my arrest, and a year since my last ticket and I have not been pulled over once. In the last year, I've gotten engaged, bought a house with my fiance' and had a baby. I'm DONE screwing around. I'm just hoping that I get an investigator (for NYPD) to see me for who I am and not for my past even though its not THAT old. I have a degree in criminal justice and I scored super high on the NYPD test as I did on the corrections.
Sorry for the rant, I just really want to get in this field

100 tickets is unreal but it could be years ago depending on how old you are. The real issues that can jam you up are the recent tickets and arrest. Kind of like going back to your old ways. Another issue you will have is you will need to tell your NYPD Investigator that Suffolk County Sheriffs office rejected you. Then they will look into why and probley ask for some type of paperwork on it. Another member on here was going threw the same type of situation for different reasons and it did postpone his entry into NYPD.

By your wording I take it that you weren’t called yet. Just like PBXTech said, call civil service and give them your new address. They might have you call the Sheriffs Office too, but I doubt it. Your information on file before you are canvassed from the Sheriff is kept at Civil Service.

I'm a Suffolk C/O. I've been on over 10 years. It is true we've been without a contract since 2003. Once that arbitration decision comes down, whenever that is since we can't get a straight answer from anyone, there will be many retirements. That last test was top heavy in high scorers- having over 100 tickets and a 511 can forget it- I suspect the canvassing would be competitive. The physical is a breeze if you lay off the bacon-ators and do the right thing.
Yes, some guys take the job to get into the retirement and then move on to other agencies. It's not for everyone. I will say that the hiring practices have been shaky- don't go by what those Personnel guys tell you- none of them have jail experience to speak of anyway- I think three of them are Deps as well.
It's a good job- yes, it should be better. 99% of the stress is the co-workers. The contract situation has eroded morale.
Good luck.

Not that they're bad guys or anything, but they have political appointed jobs- good for them, but it is what it is. Besides, what does a Personnel Deputy Sheriff know about working a cell block on Christmas or any inside the jail matter? So yes, they get to go to seminars and yell at prospective recruits for not having black pens or a U.S. Postal money order. It's all just a game. The best thing I can offer to anyone considering taking this job, is this: It's a good job. You can come in, make money and benefits, and go home. No one, especially this administration, cares about anything other than the status quo. Find a razor? Great, but why were you looking there in the first place when your security punch was 2 minutes late? That's the kind of thing you have to deal with. No atta boys, no 'good job', just good old fashioned show up and go home. If you have a good hook you'll be in great shape- we even have an I.A.guy with like 2 years on the job- it's the American dream. God bless.

Since most of us already completed the process I called civil service. I told them that I baiscly completed the process and was waiting on a call. They told me that there was going to be a class this year but was stopped by a hiring freeze. I guess that explains no contact with us for the last 2 months. She then said to send the letter back in to stay in the process. Since our group already completed just about everything we will not have to do anything over. The last thing she said was there "should" be a class in Jan or Feb of 2009. If anyone has any other information about this please add it.

My friend and I just got the same letter. We called civil service and we got a very brief answer “Just send it back in if you are still interested.” She sounded pretty aggravated so I can only assume that they have been getting these phone calls all day. The explanation you got was a lot longer than mine, lol.
So all we do is check yes and send it back in… that’s it? Do we have to call our investigator?
