I applied to both dept but LA is going a lot quicker but I know a lot of IPD officers that want me to go with them but I think there is more space in lapd to move up eventually. What do you guys think?

Go with the department you want to work for. Do ride-alongs and see where you fit in best with the type of police work you want to do.

Thanks I might just do that but I really want to be a detective and I heard it's easier to get into that position in LA so I think I might go that way.

I dont think its easy either way. Promoting to detective is a difficult, time consuming and much sought after promotion. I wouldent say its easy to promote to detective in any department. Also plan on spending a while in patrol, so make sure youre ok with the dept's patrol policies and procedures.

You have probably 1000% more chance getting to a Detective spot in LAPD (or another large PD) purely because of numbers. Just like you will have a much better chance on making Sgt. at a large PD. Also, in large PD's you can usually stay in detectives if you want to. Small PD's rotate you back to patrol after 1-5 years normally.

Regardless of whether you are asking about LAPD v. Irvine/Irwindale/Indio/Imperial, you are going to find more opportunities and experiences is a shorter amount of time with LAPD, IMHO.

Sorry I meant Inglewood PD but I think I'll go with LAPD. I didn't mean to say it will be easier to become a detective I meant I would have a bigger chance of completing my goals with LA since it's a lot bigger dept. Thanks a lot for all the feedback

One fo our sergeants just lateralled to Inglewood PD. He absolutely loves it there! He says the grass IS greener....well, at least they HAVE grass at IPD....
The city is getting redeveloped, so more money is coming in. The department is expanding. Great opportunities in the areas of detectives, gang units, etc.

I've heard the Dept. is being headed by a female who came from Santa Monica (SMO), and is losing the morale and other issues: ex: Won't allow nylon gear because B/W leather is more professional (like that is the main priority in near-ghetto Inglewood).
FWIW, YMMV,

No nylon gear? That's rough, but IMHO, salty crusty faded brownish B/W looks a lot worse than older nylon gear.
I've heard from a three striper at IPD that the new Chief, former SMPD Captain, is making changes for the better, so perhaps at Officer level, change is not going over well, shocking.
