Hello there,
I’m new to the forum but I'm in the process with LAPD and I'm on my background investigation which has been going on now for 8 weeks after that my next and last step which will be the oral psych. Can anyone give me some pointers or tips on what the academy will be like and what should I expect.
Thanks Jimmy

I highly recommend you go to CAPS at the EP Academy. Thats what you can expect for PT and Discipline. Academics/Rpt writing is easy if you know how to study.
Good luck with the process.

The most important thing is to start a running program if you haven't already. Sit ups, push ups, and pull ups can't hurt either.
If you don't know how to, already, find a former Marine or other military guy who can teach you how to spit shine leather.
Save some money up so you'll be able to pay for all your gear and some extra. When the time comes, get two pairs of shoes so one pair is always spit-shined to the 'n'th degree. After inspection you stow the great spit shined pair and put on the fairly spit shined pair. I know one guy who bought seven uniforms, so he only had enough to cover him if he missed getting to the dry cleaner.
Man, some of my classmates had been reserve officers prior to being hired as sworn - they all had second seats of full leather gear so they could stow their best set, after inspection, and wear their grubby set for PT.
Get driving directions ready for three locations, from your home: (1) Ahmanson Recruit Training Center (ARTC) located at Manchester & Osage in Westchester, (2) Edward M. Davis - Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (Davis-EVOC) in Mission Hills, and (3) The Elysian Park Academy at 1800 North Academy Drive. Know how-to get to all three and all the alternate routes.

I live 1 mile a way from the Ahmanson facility. Where is the best place to take the caps program I went last Saturday to The EP academy. It wasn't that bad I do need to work on my cardio but everything else was a breeze. Thanks a lot for all the helpfull info.

I wasn't aware they offered CAP anywhere else, but Elysian Park. ARTC would be good if they do, so you could get used to where you'll start your PT life. Cardio is the key, get your mileage up if at all possible.
You live a mile away from ARTC? You may actually turn a profit, from your academy experience, if you have space to rent out. I was always amazed by how many recruits arrived for the orientation, which took place a week before the start of the class, who had no place to stay and were coming from out-of-state or farther up/down the state.

Do you know how long I will have to be in each facility?

Pretty sure your time is split up pretty evenly between ARTC (Class, PT&SD) & Davis/EVOC (Tactics, shooting, driving), and the final week at Elysian Park (just a few classes and graduation rehearsal).

If you haven't been told, go to http://www.policebackground.net. It's run by a LAPD BI and there is TONS of information on that site

LAPD recently changed their training process, something called RBC. Should be interesting to see how the recruits turn out...also the academy is only 6 months now, not 7.

It's now based on the Royal Canadian Mounted Police training model. Each class will have a team of dedicated instructors (from each of the subjects being taught) who will follow/mentor/monitor them for the entire six months.

The "New Academy" at LAPD is much hands on, much more scenario based. And apparently they get all the hard stuff out of the way first :P

Hello All,
I applied to LAPD and did the expedited process in December. However, I was also in the NYPD hiring process and just started the academy in January. I've been assigned a LAPD mentor. I'm terrified to get the call from LAPD because I will have a really tough decision to make. What would you guys suggest to someone in my situation?

Its your call, LAPD will make you go through their academy should you decide to lateral over. It kind of looks bad to leave an agency so early...but do whats good for you.

1mile away?? (inglewood or westchester)????? Man,all you need do is run westchester pkwy at least 3 times a wk from sepulveda West way to pershing dr and you will most definitely be ready! the LAPD you will be attending is NOT as stressful as when i went thru, nor what many on this board went thru prior to '92 !!! currently its all about retention-paying attn in class and bieng able to complete the POST L.D.s(learning domains) when they are presented ,plus the arrest and control segments of training. LAPD has always used running to break the "Cartmans"(fat bellies) who have the nerve to show up in that condition, so if you can bring your running time down to at least a 7 min mile you should be okay, plus be able to run at least 3+ miles at any one time.you will not get yelled at or "tac'd as some of the higher stress academies like LASD or rio Hondo, Riverside SD-Ben Clark, or OCSDA,but the stress of performing at acceptible levels will always be present.LAPD academy is no walk in the park, by any means-they don't allow people who hide in the back and try to slide thru, so make sure you are mature enough to deal with being told waht to do without being able to question it........

Yeah I live in Inglewood so it's walking distance for me. Thanks for all the helpful info. I'm taking CAPS right now so I think I'll be more than prepared when my time comes.

Does anyone know if there are recruits that live in Inland Empire in the LAPD academy?

For the people who just got hired, did all of you go to CAPS? I talked to my mentor and I told him i only can make it one day a week. Can I still get hired without going to CAPS? I told him i work out alone but he insisted to go to CAPS. Do you think going one day a week is fine? Are there any applicants going to the meet and greet next thursday @ 6pm in the personnel building?

Going at least once a week is infinitely better than not going at all. You can get hired without going to caps, but unless you have a good workout program you're sticking to, you'll be at a disadvantage.
Word is that they once again lowered the physical fitness standards but the people who skate through are targets for the PT instructors... they absolutely hate it when you're out of shape.

I thought it was already low enough? Did they change it recently?

had a classmate make that "decision" also- she went 10 wks at E.P with us before dropping and going BACK to NYPD ( she came to our graduation in her Neeewwww Yooaaaack" blues/Its all about where you want to work and live. from following the Posts, even talking to former NYPD officers,I'd say that L.A. officers have it better in alot of ways(despite the housing issue-which is not that much of an issue now that there is a slump- the COL is still cheaper here and the officer pay ,is higher. NYPD $30K to $59K/yr vs LAPD $55K to $79K/yr to start)

For the 3a class it was 50% and I heard that it was lowered to 40% or something like that for the 3b or 4 class.
We spent the majority of our first month at EP with occasional outings at ARTC. Since then it's been either ARTC or Davis. Alonzo hit it right on the mark if you want to know what we do at either training center/facility.
