I know about tht upcoming test for the MTAPD and have seen alot of thin info on here regarding the agency but I wanna know how long after taking the test do you start the other steps and what is the soonest academy you would be going to after this next test and how many people are being hired. I saw the MTA police officers handing out cards on the LIRR saying there is going to be more of a police presence being seen. Will this affect how many people they hire? is there going to be a major increase in manpower needed? if so how soon?

eh, they don't hire a lot of people.
I have two friends that work for MTAPD.
they both took the 2004 test and one was called within a couple of months and the other one was called last year.
all together I think since 2004 they've probbaly hired around 200 new PO's.
and they don't have their own academy, their academy is mixed in with the NYPD academy class.

This time around they might hire a lot more since they have that Anti terrorism money coming from the fed's.

I just graduated from the NYPD Academy this past December, and there were 6 MTA Cops at our graduation, they sat behind me. There is no list number since the MTA Police does not fall under Civil Service Law. It is just a pass/fail grade. You are picked randomly, just like Port Authority Police. One of those MTA Cops told me that it is just hit or miss, you either get choosen or you do not get picked. I am taking their exam in April and at least if I ever get picked, I do not have to go through the Academy.

If you already graduated from the NYPD academy class you don't need to go through the academy class a 2nd time for the MTA ?

Nope, no repeat of the academy. Most departments in NY will hire NYPD guys without sending them to another academy.

Heh, most. Two of the most desired - Nassau and Suffolk - make you go through theirs again. If you get hired by the individual town/village PDs you usually don't have to go through the County academy, but if you're hired straight by the County you're back to being a recruit/trainee for six months.

thats because Nassau and Suffolk PD have their own way of doing things. They do not want to see their cops doing things the city way. The town and village PD's dont really care because for them its the difference of paying cops for 7 months to be in the academy when they are already certified or pay those cops who are already certified to work for them on the streets right away.

Well a major thing with the NYPD academy is that you will get MTA PD and some SUNY PD going through the academy.

So, if you are already nypd and mta hires you, you just LATERAL over. No reason or need to go through the same exact academy 2 times.

Great info Pekkier. By chance, would you know how often the MTA gives out the test? Every year, every three years, etc.
