View Full Version : RSO: No Need For Custody

RSO has just decided to send the majority of academy graduates straight to patrol instead of custody. The deputies who are currently assigned to the jails are looking to remain on standby due to a "lack of experience" in that position. This cycle could be in effect for three years.

Traditionally, Riverside deputies spend anywhere from two to three years in custody. I hear LA deputies spend four to eight years in custody, OC deputies up to ten. While assigned to custody one is able to obtain the critical skills needed to deal with the knuckleheads of society; this is important because recruits are graduating younger and with less life experience.

Should deputies be made to work custody before going 10-8 or is that a thing of the past? What do you think?

Being a custody Deputy myself, I think the jails offer some pretty good hands on experience you just cant get anywhere else. You are able to pick the criminals brains, you learn how to talk to them, and your able to exercise your officer safety in a control environment.

But I also think 2-3 years is the max a Deputy should be in custody, after that I believe boredom and complaisance starts to lay in, which is not good. Plus its like a right of passage in my eyes, almost every Deputy in the LASD has to do their stint in a custody facility, a few get to go to courts or transportation bureau straight out of the academy.

The way that RSO is gonna do it, if it is true, sound kind of unfair to the Deputies that have been waiting their turn in custody to go 10-8. IMO

Also Ive talked to numerous of the inmates, and for some reason they have a lot more respect for us than the guys in blue. I don't know why, but it never fails, if they lived in an area that borders LASD and LAPD, they say it again and again they'd rather get jammed by the Sheriff's. Kinda of funny if you ask me.

This has been discussed alot before, but I think custody is great and a valuable experience. When I worked custody out of the academy, some smaller agencies (i.e. Redondo Beach) made their recruits work for a few months to get experience dealing with knuckleheads. I only spent a couple of years in custody. I think thats a good amount of time. You get alot of hands on and learn alot about different gangs and narco related crimes. Alot of LASD Deps went straight to patrol from the academy. For other stations, they are spending less than one year in custody. If a yound Dep takes advantage of it, there is alot to be gained working a couple of years in custody. You have your whole career ahead of you still. It's also a nice option for older guys who are burned out in the streets and who don't want to go to a specialized unit. Can be nice $$ in overtime.

I've never worked in the jail.. but from my experience of dropping off arrestee's.. there are some intake deputies that talk a lot of trash to the prisoners.. Its easy to do in a controlled environment when you have 10 of your co-workers behind you.. but when they get out on the street.. they're going to realize thats not the best route to take with people you stop.

I think I know what you're trying to say, but you do have to gain control and let the knuckleheads know who's house they're in.
