I haven’t posted here in a while. I’m currently in Rio Hondo’s class 186 which started on 01/14/08. I made it through the first week which is considered orientation week. Tomorrow is day zero. Our class started out with 47 cadets and we lost one on the second day. The week wasn’t that bad, but on Friday some of the cadets had the sniffles and I now have a head cold. I've been sick all weekend. Hopefully it won’t be that bad and I can be well enough to do PT on Wednesday. Some of the agencies that are represented in the class are Glendale, Pasadena, El Monte, CSULB, Irvine, La Habra, Arcadia, Monrovia, Pomona, Los Angeles County Police, South Gate, and Whittier.

Keep it up buddy. Nurse that cold with plenty of fluids and sleep. I found that taking vitamin C pills help me out tremendously. I will be joining the extended Class #6 in the next couple of months so I'll definitely see you around. Good luck and stay strong!

Zinc lozenges help too but you HAVE TO TAKE THEM WITH FOOD or they'll upset your stomach. They'll actually get you over the cold faster if you start them early enough.

You lost one on the second day?????? How??? I was in class 138. We had it pretty tough. It was almost on par with Army Basic. You had to earn any priviledges that the staff gave you. We lost around 20 on the first day. We started with approx. 110 and graduated 63.
I was at Rio Hondo for some AOT stuff a couple months ago and saw cadets wearing tennies with their class B's. They didn't run everywhere they went and didn't get Tac'd like they should. One of the staff told me that lawsuits caused them to tilt nipple to these little cry babies.
I know it sounds like one of those "I used to walk 10 miles barefoot in the snow" stories but it's true.
What has happened to the academy that I was so proud to attend? Since the academies are starting to be like this, what's going to happen to the job most of us are proud of?

I was invited to Day Zero tomorrow, but after working until the wee hours, I find it's really hard to get outta bed early enough....good luck, and remember it's just a game. Try to look at it from a 3rd person point of view and have fun with it.

We lost one the second day during the PAT testing. Not sure exactly what happened to her.
From my understanding we'll wear tennis shoes starting week two. I can't recall the reason behind wearing them.

Is anyone from the county going to be there? I'm surprised there's only 4 county cadets in my class.

If you get to wear tennis shoes as your regular shoes instead of bates dress shoes, consider yourself lucky. You don't have to worry about shining your shoes every night, keeping them shiny throughout the day, and not slipping when you run around in them.
Good luck partner, Hope to see you out in the field in a few months
P.S.
If you need any study guides for LD's I have a bunch from when I went through the Academy in 06.

+1
I was told by some of my friends who are in 185 that you had to earn the right to wear tennis shoes.

The tuition is $918, plus uniforms, duty gear, various books, etc. In addition the EVOC course is $525.00.

So you're looking at roughly 2.5K?

I lost track because you don't spend all the money at once. You're paying Rio Hondo for some things, the uniform shop for a lot of other things, and Target for the rest. One of the other bigger expenses is buying your weapon (mine was $400).

Dont have time to read all the posts. Take 2 1000 ML times released (Very important) Vitamin C then sleep as much as possible on the weekend. The Vit C has to be matabolized and more than 1000 Ml at a time will be flushed hence the time releases.
Oh and sweat, Germs cant live in the heat. Get your body under the blankets tonight and sweat your way through the night.

Well I made it through Day Zero without a lot of attention being focused on me, although with such a small class there's enough attention to go around. It was not as bad as I thought it would be -- it was more entertaining than anything. We lost one cadet who was from the LA County Police. He didn't show up for Day Zero. We did about five quickie changes from class B uniforms to PT gear and back.

Meh - if they couldn't handle the thought of "Day Zero," we don't need 'em. Bye.

it sometimes amazes me when someone drops out the 1st day. the agency spent all this time and resources to hire someone and they chicken out. what did they expect the academy to be? a babysitting spoon feeding environment . anyhow's hankido good luck and start applying now to agencies. you'll probably get picked up and sponsored.

good - means more of a chance for a Badge for you !!! like i said time and time again- the "beatlemania" mentality ( I want the police pay ,the "look"and the badge, just don't want to have to do what it takes to get it)
Next class review or when recruiters come up to the academy- county Pd or others-get out there and let them know..

Class 131, We started with 120 finished with 70. Lost the majority with in the first week. It's a calming effect after a LD test and waiting for the results, the tac staff comes in and calls out a name, telling them to bring their gear. You never saw that cadet again. GOOD LUCK, STAY POSITIVE..
