I am currently a deputy sheriff with Riverside county sheriff's dept. and want to at the latest retire and maybe put another couple of years in on the islands, preferrably kauai since my spouse is from their. Do they accept a post certificate from california and if not what is the procedure. if you can pm me on any infor and or suggestions I would appreciate it.

davjon14,

Look on the state web site and go to the law enforcement section. It should tell you what the requirements are. Also look at the website for Kaui PD.

From my understanding, when I was looking into it a year ago, Hawaii officers are NOT POST certified, although their training is equitable to quite a few large and reputable PD's.

Good luck

I am not sure about Kauai PD but I believe all of the counties do not accept latter transfers. I will use HPD as an example. HPD does not accept any lateral transfers. You would be required to start from scratch and go through the academy, FTO and the 1 year probationary period. There have been quite a few retired or officers come to HPD and work for a few years.

As far as the POST certification goes, POST specifically states that they will not take Hawaii LE officers. There seems to be a rift between POST and Hawaii as we are not POST members nor do we honor reciprocity with them. The main reason we do not accept POST is that, the POST certification requirements are far below our academy requirements.

This may change with POST however. One of my partners is trying to lateral to a Colorado PD that is POST. He has sent them all of his training topics / hours from our academy. After a lenghty review he was told that he was good to go as long as he passes the the POST testing. So POST may accept us but unfortunately not vice versa.

I do believe however that Kauai PD academy is not as long as HPD.

Former Chief Charles Moose works for you guys now (he took over the Hawaii Air National Guard Security Forces Commander spot @ Hickam) and he had to go through the entire academy......

As for Kaui.....nothing on the PD's website at all about employment other than that application....

When my wife said she wanted to come home(Big island) I looked into the lateral transfer. This was 2006. Kauai was accepting laterals but I don't know about now. Maui, Honolulu and HPD require you to go through the full academy. I just finished the academy and am now in FTO. If you want to send me a PM I will give you more info.

It was crazy but I survived.... my Mass. certification is light years ahead of HCPD academically, but the physical and weapons training was very good and comparable to Mass.
