Hey guys, once I finish the academy I will be looking to buy a house. Where do most LEO guys look to buy a house? Or rather, where do you guys think is a good up and coming place to live. I've heard a lot about the communities down the 210 around the LA/SB county line (Claremont, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana) etc. With the housing market the way it is, the best time to buy is coming up. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

No, I got hired with LASD.

Well, you need to look at what/where you want to work....any of the places you are describing will be a very nasty drive while assigned to custody, since we dont have any jails east of downtown LA.....once you go to patrol, you would have more leeway as to where you work, but you would still be limited to east county stations; IE Walnut; San Dimas; Industry ect....unless you want to spend half your life on the freeway.

Fontana is a pit....RC and Claremont seem to be fairly nice........

Well, I figure I would be working all night long starting off so the commute might not be that bad. Which patrol stations are the quickest to get to?

I live in Rancho Cucamonga, also grew up there. its real nice, just getting a lil crowded. If you stay north, its still pretty open.

Depends on what you mean by 'quick'...commute or time spent in custody waiting to go there.....

And the shift you work does affect your commute time...greatly....what may be a 45 minute drive on earlies is a 2 1/2 hour drive on days

syphon157

I mean, shortest waiting period in custody.

LA DEP

Always go for the busier station....Industry; Pico; Temple ect....San Dimas and Walnut are a bit quieter, and have a longer waiting list..you also will not get the same training experience at a slow station.....once you graduate, there is a spot on the department intranet that you can check/compare your 'numbers' to a particular station......also, keep in mind that you can only change your station preference twice a year (June/Dec)...

Lancaster, and Palmdale were moving pretty fast, they kinda slowed down a bit. Last patrol school a Deputy from where I work at went to Malibu/Lost Hills, with six months in custody. A few of my classmates have gone out to lakewood, lancaster, palmdale, santa clarita, and TSB (transportation service bureau). TSB sends you to train at a regular patrol station (CEN, CAS, ELA etc) and once you are done, you go to work whatever line they assign you to. Both the guys from my class that went to TSB trained at ELA station.

I've been a in custody for almost a year and half, and I'm holding out for Century . I am 91 on the list but with over 30 extensions Im a really like 60.

I work at wayside, and commute from the San Gabriel Valley. I ve worked all three shifts at the facility. I'm currently assigned to PMs (1400-2200). I hardly catch traffic to and from work, but a ot of people don't like that shift because they think your whole day is wasted. Personally i love it, I get to sleep in after my doubles and I fell more rested going to work.

When I was on training I was on days (0600-1400) which is cool but I caught traffic on the way home and just always felt tired. Once I got signed off, I went to early mornings (2200-0600), again I caught traffic on the way home and when your tired it just sucks. We also work one day mandatory double (county double) so we could get three days off, so that's good.

Well you wont know what facility your going to until like a week before you graduate, I was hoping I was going to go downtown but ended up 50 miles from home. You could always transfer, also different facility have different start times, I think North Facility starts their shifts one hour later than us and East Facility starts theirs two hours later than us.

I know a few deputies that own up in the Santa Clarita Valley area and I know a lot that own in the Chino Hills area as well. Well syphon good luck in the academy.

Cruz,

If you want to transfer to TTCF/CJ, see if somebody would do a 'body swap' with you....unless they dont allow those anymore....

6 months to "Lost Cause"?....wow....I've heard about the quick turn around to AV, but not there....

I live up in SCV,,,,will probably end up somewhere at PDC when I promote, unless I manage to score a patrol station

Not North Fontana. Fontana is a big city (approx 150,00 + . If you stay north of Baseline, near the 15 fwy, they are all new homes. Near the 10 fwy. and I would agree with you.

You can consider living in Upland, its probably the nicest city in the inland empire. There are alot of homes for sale now in the city.

prior to retirement I was a Sgt. at IRC and worked 1630-0230, thankfully I had very little traffic going to work and coming home at 0300 the freeway was empty. Working a East County station your commute wouldn't be that bad. I spent 15 years at San Dimas and the 9 mile drive was nice. But when I transferred to Hq. DB at the Star Center the traffic sucked. I'll never forget the day it took me 4 hours to drive home during a storm and a gazillion accidents.

LA DEP, How long is the wait if you wanted to go to Walnut Station? I hear its like 4 to 5 years because of the nice area and no one wants to leave that station. But I hear that Lakewood station would take a year in custody and your in, and that station is pretty slow as well, so whats the difference?

Retired96

Lakewood has never been considered a slow station, during my career it was always one of the busiest stations.

So, whats the deal with Walnut station? don't they cover a larger area with more of a population then Lakewood?

Retired96

Walnut Station covers Diamond Bar, city of Walnut and County area known as Rowland Heights. Diamond Bar and Walnut are not high crime areas.

Lakewood station which polices Lakewood, Paramount, Bellflower, and a few other areas has a higher population density and areas that are lower income. They have more of a Gang problem than Walnut Station.

When I worked Walnut in the late 80's, when it also was responsible for all the areas that San Dimas Station now covers it was not uncommon for Lakewood Station to have 300-400 more tags for service at the end of a 24 hour day.

Walnut is a good station to work but not if your expecting the Ghetto violence of a Ghetto station.

Besides if you live in the Inland Empire as I have for over 35 years, who wants to drive 50 plus miles to work and court every day.

Retired96 beat me to the answer....anyway, I never worked Walnut or any of the east county stations...all of my patrol time (so far) has been in region II.....

One thing to always consider before putting in your 'dream sheet' in the academy is the drive to a particular station/unit.......there are several places that are not freeway close.....and the drive is ugly no matter what shift you work....

You're right. I never knew much about Lkd Sta. until I got sent there to work gangs for a year. Very busy with paper and radio calls. Some pretty decent RD's to work there also. Alot of people moving from the westside and settling in E. Lkd, Paramount and Bellflower.

We might as well call Lakewood what it really is: Southeast Compton.

For all you IE guys, is the main reason you live there (besides the affordable housing) because of the tax advantage between LA/San Bernardino/Riverside counties?

Retired96
01-21-2008, 07:25 PM
If your talking the sales tax which is only 1/2 percent less, I don't think people living in the Inland Empire even think about it. Its just nicer than LA County and overall its a much more conserative area.

LOLOLOLOLOL!!! but it is a "relatively clean" and tidy S/E compton (for now)-neat and manicured lawns ,with meth labs in the backyards, neatly dressed blk/wht/hisp crack heads on bikes cruising lakewood Ave/Clark or Candlewood, and the occasional LBPD gang unit "escorting"(dumping) local thugs out of Long beach via the "blk and wht " taxi to the rear of the Lakewood malls movie theater parking lot. Oh and then theres the occasional off training after hrs party in the "garage")-there are nicer areas of N.Long Beach, some parts of signal hill ( if you can afford it),but the houses are small

Don't forget Lakewood has the beautiful community of Hawaiian Gardens, lovely community just ask the Ortiz family :( I've worked all three regions and am back in Region II. My recommendation (I've been an fto in regions I and II) is go to Region II to train and get your feet wet, then go east.
