Anyone know anything about these agencies? Ive done a ride along with Monterey Park, I had a good time, seemed like a ok place but I only saw a fraction of the department. I want to know mostly interpolitics how that is, current agency im with theres just too much of it and I want to avoid that. Id also have to attend another academy im sure, CA post wont accept Nevada Post I think....Any help would be appreciated

Both are SGV towns( san gabriel Valley) and they hide their internal "dirt" fairly well.One of my old partners and now a Sgt at ONTARIO intn'l Airport PD( part of the LAX PD) got the lateral fever in the mid '90s and went to Monterey Pk PD- he HATED the small town attitude and during that time they weren't exactly getting much respect from LASD,nor LAPD. (same partner came back "home" in 2 months).Out of the two- I'd choose Monterey PK PD and here's why:

1) pay - Monterey pk PD is now at $59K to $72K/yr ( Montebello PD pays a measely starting of $52K to 67K/yr) retirement for MPPD is 3%@50,Montebello PD is 3%@55

2)Mgm't- Chief Jones Moy -25 yr vet- keeps things nice and quiet in MMPD and I have noticed that he has had very little criticism of his mgm't style by officers or the community. Gary Couso-Vasquez, a former LAPD boss, has had some bumpy relations with the community and mgm't as well as a few sex harrassment issues and lawsuits. and although both cities are relatively close in terms of size and economics (monterey Pk is 7.5 sq miles ,Montebello is 8.5 sq miles,both have about 60,000 residents),Monterey 'Pk has a a higher per capita income per house hold,and its local city go'vt seems to be more stable

3) community- Monterey Pk is predominently Asian(55%),and Montebello Pk is 75% Hisp;altough population #s are the same - violent and property crimes are 2X higher in Montebello than monterey PK*( last attended an Asian Gang crimes task force seminar in Monterey Pk and police officials commented that asians tend to underreport certain typs of crime).nearly 18% of the population in Montebello is living at/below the poverty line vs,14% at monterey Park,both are deeply immigrant communites,but citizens of monterey Pk are less likely to complain about police services or action,and tend to be more respectful(some Anti- American -Pro mexico rallies seem to have had the "blessings" of local city mgm't in Montebello).Gang activity is less visible in monterey PK (although active violent asian gangs such as the "V" ,LGKK,and Wah Ching are present).Montebello tends to see alot of traditional SGV area cholo(hisp) gangs present or passing thru in addition to tagger gangs.Both cities are bedroom communities ,but it appears that Monterey parks tax base is stronger than Montebello's

3)manpower- like most SGV agencies, manpower rarely passes (100) officers;
MPPD is approx (80) officers ,20 reserves and 50 civies-MPD is about (90) officers,25 reserves,and 30 civie staff.

**both are small town PDs-they often come into contact and know other officers from local SGV towns(many have attended training together at rio hondo Police academy in Whittier)-so you might as well go for the one with the higher pay-monterey PK

As for your Nevada POST? go to www.post.ca.gov and check into the "out of state waiver" conditions....

Also, the Montebello Unified School District has its own PD. Yes, the School PD are Sworn-in POST approved officers.

MUSD PD is a part-time detail with most, if not all, their officers belonging to another full-time agency.

LACountypolice4evr...how old are you if you're still going to school MTB? I figure you were over 20-1/2 since you've applied to various LE agencies.

Montebello PD Chief Couso-Vasquez recently announced he's retiring.

My info is very dated, I was a CSO for Montebello in the mid 80's. At the time it was an excellent agency with good support from the city. But their tax base is unstable and after I left I heard their budget and support took a big dump. After Chief Simonian retired I heard they went outside (LAPD) and the new chief brought a lot of people over which irritated the officers who were already there. At the time I thought it would have been a great place to work, now I'm not so confidant. As for the area the north end was pretty nice while the south end could provide for some good work times!

Gary Couso-Vasquez was a sergeant at LAPD, and came to County Police as a Parks Services Bureau Chief. He stayed long enough with us to get the job at MPD. That's all I'm sayin'

FUNNNYY,That,huh ???? How a "so called " hardcore city cop NEEDED the "creds" from a "specialized agency" to make himself look viable to be Chief at another municipal agency.I also heard,and it was in the late '80s when I was going thru the Reserve program at rio hondo,that Montebello Pd went dumpsville after Simonian also !!Know of another guy-a "lifer" reserve at Montebello who USED his Full academy training and creds from Gen.services PD to get him in the door at montebello PD full time( but get this -now he MAKES LESS $$$)Yeah specialized agencies ain't "crap"-( ahh, yeah ," sure" ....):rolleyes:
