The full extended/reserve module, giving them full sworn powers.

thats "interesting" as the Ca penal code only recognizes them as "public officers" purusant to 836.5 PC and having arrest authority like a peace officer, but not as peace officers, under 830.9 PC. All they technically need is the PC 832 arrest and control course plus the add't tactics and firearms segment o the PC 832 course. Will they be armed or authorized to carry firearms?

According to the cadet that's currently in Class #6 at Rio Hondo, yes she will be armed. While she may be a duly sworn officer, I'm trying to figure out what her role will be in community policing.

????? sounds like a "way" to get more peace officers on the streets without having to hire a full time police officer or pay a reserve officer per diem-are the Park patrol officers also armed?

In the area I live the ACO's go to the Police Academy, carry multiple weapons, have full police powers, and have police lights equipment etc on the vehicles. It sounds like thats not how it usually is in california.....

While not common where I live, some of us (ACO's) are sworn police officers.
Basically it's a way to get more bodies on the street, for not much more money. When I was originally hired, I was "JUST" an ACO, amber lights on my vehicle, no firearms, or powers of arrest. Since then they have decided to have me become a sworn officer, the argument was simply that I'm on the road already, a full time employee, and acting as a uniformed representative of the town; plus it was only a small amount to bump me up to a patrol officers salary.

The main difference I can see here is that unlike many parts of the country, animal control is a municipal function, and not done by the county. So it may be easier to move one person into LE vs. several.

What do you mean its a municipal function and not done by the county?

I have noticed in many parts of the country that I've visited it seems that animal control is handled by the county government, or an ASPCA type non-profit that contracts it's services out. As an example look at Stafford County Animal Control, http://stafford.va.us/Departments/Animal_Control/Index.shtml

In Maine, animal control is a function of the municipal (town/city) government. The county government in Maine has pretty much no power. All the county provides is an EMA director/staff, sheriff’s dept, jail, and the hall of records/registry of deeds.

Well a couple of good places to look are the ACO Fun Stop http://www.acofunstop.com/
and the National Animal Control Assoc. http://www.nacanet.org/jobopps.htm

Also many states have some type of electronic bulletin board where towns & cities post job openings as an example
http://www2.memun.org/public/wantads/itemlist.cfm

In my experience if you're looking to be in animal control and LE, your best bet is to apply for a Game Warden type job. I haven't met very many ACO's with Full LE powers, heck with a couple very specific exceptions I have more authority than a state humane agent here.

Be safe and watch out for pistol packing opossums :p

Yeah Ive researched being a Game Warden. That is a much harder position to get. The pay is very low too. I might still try to go it though after I get some AC experience.
