Any of you guys out there know of any of the pros and cons of working for the Port Authority PD, other than the fact that they pay well? Im in the NYPD academy right now and possibilly going to be called for the PAPD academy and was debating as to what to do. Obviously the pay is better, but im afraid with the PAPD all you mostly do is stand around and protect property.. Any opinions would be great.

sorry but you have as much shot at getting on PAPD as I do of running for president, winning, and getting struck by lightning with a winning lottery ticket in my pocket.

NYPD is not releasing officers records to PAPD and PAPD will not hire you without the records. Before joining NYPD you should have checked into this. Sorry for the bad news.

Sik70:

IF YOU WANT OR EVEN THINK YOU MAY WANT TO BE PAPD, THEN RESIGN FROM THE ACADEMY RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I AM DEAD SERIOUS. THERE ARE 3 GUYS IN MY COMMAND ALONE WHO COULD NOT BE HIRED BY THE PAPD.

If you do not get called from the PAPD, the NYPD will gladly take you back. There are numerous people who have quit and come back. But if you graduate from the academy and get out on the street, you will NOT be hired by the PAPD.

Best of luck (PAPD is a much better job)

I believe it is too late, you are already employed by the NYPD. Even if you resign PAPD will still need to get the employment info for the 1 or 2 months.

I didn't think there were any cons to working for PAPD!LOL.

Seriously, I would stick it out with NYPD if I were you. Especially, since you probably won't be hired by PAPD now since they'll want your records.

if you want day to day action on the streets stick with nypd.. papd has some commands that are busy but you might just get the holland tunnel or outerbridge where the only action you get is a vehicle accident or breakdown but the plus part is the pay $$$ lol but i would think if you resign before the academy is over you shouldnt have a issue.. the nypd does not want to spend money training po's and losing them to other agencys so i would say quit while you ahead if you want papd. btw there no telling if you get in the papd academy since they go by the computer spitting out names so you might get a 95 and not get called so its a risk you have to take since nypd is always there for your second option.

actually, i met with my investigator this past monday, and he said there is no problem as fars as me being in the NYPD academy right now. He said they are not able to get my records from the NYPD as far as my academy info, but once i graduate from the academy, the city will release them. as far as they are concerned, there is no problem with the fact that im in the NYPD.

Sik, I hate to say it but lets just say that your investigator is not being completely forthcoming; probably for legal reasons.

There was a class action lawsuit filed by the PBA on behalf of numerous NYPD members last year regarding the NYPD releasing records to PAPD. The PBA lost.

The general consensus is that the PAPD could easily hire these guys, as other agencies hire former NYPD, and without the release of their personnel file. However, there was some type of handshake agreement between the PD and PAPD regarding the huge amount of cops leaving for PAPD.

Bottom line is this: No matter what anyone here on this board says, or even what your PAPD investigator says, you will not be hired by the PAPD if you graduate from the academy and begin working in a command.

If you seriously want to be PAPD, quit the NYPD today. Like I said before, if you do quit the academy today, then don't make it on to PAPD, the NYPD will gladly take you back, even if your investigator here makes it seem like he is doing you a favor.

Best of luck.

actually the other agencies that hire NYPD use polygraphs to get their info. NJ does not allow polygraph exams as part of a hiring process, and since PAPD is an agency for NY & NJ they can not do it.

I am aware of the polygraph issue, however, that in itself does not prevent the PAPD from hiring NYPD MOS. It was a handshake agreement between 2 agencies who share jurisdiction in many areas of the city.

The investigator LIED to you. The ONLY way NYPD has released records, is for employees that are no long employed by the NYPD. NYPD WILL NOT release your records to PAPD unless you RESIGN - which is a big chance to take just in case PAPD does not hire you. Good luck.

Does anyone know if the NYPD withholds records for civilian members of service as well, or just the records of the uniform members of service?

Civilian MOS do not have CCRBs made against them and dont go through mickey mouse BS.

I do not forsee a problem.. they can replace CMOS faster than UMOS in a hearbeat.

I dont even think what FL5oh said will even jive as well, as the NYPD will WITHHOLD your RECORDS... meaning its a RECORD of you, employed or resigned.

I would not risk it and just go through the academy and graduate in the garden.

Cons of PAPD: stuck in an airport, bus terminal or an interstate tunnel/bridge, no real movement up the ranks or even to the designation of DETECTIVE. ZZZZ(BORRRING).

PRO'S: CHAAAA CHINGGGGGGGGGG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Go through the academy and make SGT in 5yrs... make $105k w/o overtime.

Go through the academy and make SGT in 5yrs... make $105k w/o overtime.

It is more like: make $100K/ year as a Sgt AFTER YOU HAVE 20 YEARS ON AT TOP SGT PAY.

This salary includes longevity pay for 20 year vets, uniform allowance, and holiday pay.

For a 5 year wonder, try mid 70's to start as a Sgt.

And I still say that if this guy is really serious about being a PAPD cop, he should quit the academy now.

The NYPD is so hurting for people, that if the PAPD does not work out, they will take him back in a heartbeat.

yea, on restoration and go through the start of the academy all over again. Its a coin toss.

And thats why its good to have a solid plain going in the NYPD, do the first 5 as a P.O and study your tail off for the SGt's exam, once you get to be a SGT do that for another 5 or 6 and study your tail off for the LT's exam. Score high and once your in the LT's position sit back and wait for your 20yrs to be up by then you will be making 150k with OT

Yes it is good to have a plan, of course.

But let me break it down for you: not everyone wants to be a boss. Maybe some want to be a detective, others ESU, warrants, or one of the many details available outside of patrol, or maybe just stay on patrol for their 20 years. There is nothing wrong with that. The problem is that not everyone on this job wants to or has the ability to be a boss. But the money as a cop is so bad that many are forced to work a ton of ot, paid detail, or have a second job.

As a cop on another job such as PAPD, although there are less opportunities for promotion or lateral movement, the salary is adequate so that you don't need to constantly think about how to make ends meet.
