View Full Version : CBP Canada Border vs Mexico
I'm really interested in applying for CBP but I don't want to move out to the southwest. I like new england fine. Though from what I've read on their website it sounds like all the jobs are initially down south. Does anyone know how to either stay up near Canada or atleast how long and the chances of getting transfered back up north are?

You've got to put your dues in. Plan on being located along the southern border for awhile. You really, from what I've heard, don't have much of a choice as a new BP Agent.

VTCo the question is do you want to go Border Patrol or do you want to go Customs and Border Protection formerly known as (US Customs, US Immigration).
IF BP is your answer than just as JASONA answered.
If CBP is your answer there are Northern Border announcements that you are able to apply to.

What exactly is the difference. The differences listed on the website are a bit blurry, especially in my sleep deprived state that I've been operating in for a couple of months now.

They're asking if you are applying to be a CBP Officer or a Border Patrol Agent. There is a HUGE difference between these jobs, one main difference is that CBPO's work at ports of entry and BP Agents work between the POE's.

VTCO: how interested are you in this career? If you don't know the difference between Border Patrol and CBP Officer... well, you didn't do your homework. As madchiken pointed out, the two positions are as different as night and day. As a CBPO your chances of staying up North and Vermont is 90%. As Border Patrol I agree with ASK80. So, what do you want to be ?

Matyoka, give the guy a break! This is a forum for people to gather information and ask questions about LE jobs not be ridiculed. O.com has these forums so people can become better educated on prospective job opportunities. This I think classifies as him doing his homework.

VLC... by the way anyone found the WHTI "second part" training? And you are right MIDEPUTY, maybe I was a bit harsh. However there are many CBP posts that focus on HOW to start and WHAT to do...

VTCO, First of all sign up to take the entrance exam. Make sure when you apply you annotate what area/region in the US you are interested. Hopefully once selected to be hired you will be given one of your choices. You can always turn down your choice. I wouldn't recommend that. You can always request for a lateral or swap with someone from the port you wish to go to, but you would have to work at that present assignment for X amount of time first (Don't recall time frame). Again, if you find someone interested in swapping with you, thats no guarantee that the service port will release you. You must understand, in CBP nothing is guaranteed. If this sounds too blunt, sorry. I've been in this agency too long, to me 15 yrs is too long.
