I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on Vernon PD. Do recruits have to committ to a certain amount of years when hired?

Here's the link to the city website. I think there is only like 7 homes within the entire city according to either the LA Times or the LA Daily News. It's mostly industrial.

Vernon is a Charter city. They have no civil service protection. You are an "at will" employee.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon%2C_California

Granted, its Wikipedia. But, it reflects many of the rumors that have been going around about the city of Vernon for years.

So then one could lateral as soon as they felt necessary?

You could lateral, IF you made probation. Even if you make probation, they can get rid of anyone for any reason. No job protection at all.

I'm sure you could but FWIW, Vernon PD has never been on the honor roll of most desirable agencies to work for. The fact that they require a contract for new hires (even laterals) should tell you something about people not wanting to stick around.

A friend of mine want to work for them a few years back. On his first day there they swore him in as a PO, but told him his fingerprints hadn't come back from the FBI, so he would have to work in records doing a clerk's job until they came in. After about a week her asked the Records Supervisor to keep an eye out for his prints and to let him know when they arrived. She laughed and told him they came in three weeks ago. It seemed they always had trouble filling record clerk positions, so whenever a new officer was hired they pulled the missing prints line as an excuse to keep him in records until the next new hire came along. Then the first new hire's prints "mysteriously" arrived, while the latest new hire's prints hadn't got there yet. My friend grabbed his prints, marched up to the Captains office and announced that his prints "just came in." Caught in his own lie, the Captain almost spit his coffee across the room, but wound up sending my friend out in the field. After spending a while with them and seeing how the department was run, my friend noticed that they forgot to have him sign his contract, so he quit and went to another agency.

To answer your question, we had an officer who came to us from Vernon PD. He had had to sign a contract to pay them something like $24,000 if he left before two years (maybe three). He wound up having to pay.

A LOT of ex-Vernon officers wind up having to pay....

It seems like an unusual situation over there. Do they require an early lateral on a contract to pay that amount all at once? i do know that quite a few Downey PD guys have lateraled from Vernon.

What I think what everyone is trying to politely dance around is that in the past, Vernon PD has had serious problems plus, it has had the reputation of being the last resort of scoundrels. i.e., If no one else will take you, go to Vernon. I don't know if that is the case now (nor do I know how many agencies may have turned you down so far). <G>

In any case, if you insist on carrying the cat home by its tail, give them a call. Better to get the official pitch from them first hand than from any of us.

Now I'm from the South, and I THOUGHT I'd heard them all. But this one takes the cake!! Nice phrase Lt! Can I "borrow" it? :D

Sadly, I can't claim the credit.

A man who sets out to carry a cat home by its tail learns something that will always be useful. He will never will grow dim or doubtful on the subject. However, if after going through all that he still wants to carry the cat home by its tail then I say let him! It isn't easy to be eccentric nowadays.

Ok I Am Going To Put This In Caps So You Can Get What My Pals Imachu And L-1 Are Telling You....if You Work For Vernon You Have To Sign A Contract Commiting To Work For Them, But They Never Have An Obligation To To Keep You Employed. You Commit To Them, They Dont Make Any Commitment To You. If That Sounds Like A Good Place To Work Then There Is Nothing That Anyone Can Tell You...
