After serving honorably in the Marines, I decided I wanted to become a peace officer (Police, Insurance Fraud Investigator, DMV Investigator, ABC Investigator, or a Probation Officer). The only thing holding me back is my brief drug history. Unfortunately, when I was 16 years old, I experimented with what I was told was marijuana and LSD once, and when I was 19 years old, I tried ecstasy once. I'm 28 years old now, and it’s been well over 9 years since I have touched a drug. I don’t even drink or smoke. However, my past still haunts me when thinking about applying for a position as a peace officer.
Other than experimenting with drugs a grand total of 3 times in my entire life, I have a clean criminal/driving record, an outstanding military record (7 years in the Marines), a great work history, bilingual (Spanish/English), average credit score of 750, and have a 3.8 Criminal Justice GPA. I am also in the Criminal Justice Honor Society. I plan to graduate with honors in May of 2008 with a BS in Criminal Justice.
My ultimate goal in life is to become a peace officer in California and I would appreciate any help in not only deciding a particular field but in finding out what my chances are of actually getting hired with my history.
P.S. I understand ANY use of a hallucinogen is an automatic DQ in most agencies but are there ever exceptions? I’m looking for any kind of constructive advice from people either in the field or going through the same thing I am.
